Parrish: Sampson not bowing out gracefully; Players threaten to quit

by in Media | February 22nd, 2008

greenspan3.jpgAt this point, it’s tough to separate fact from fiction after all the stuff that was being tossed around yesterday about the ongoing — but not for long! — saga that is Kelvin Sampson’s Farewell Tour. But Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline had something that caught our collective eye today: Sampson would not bow out gracefully yesterday. And if and when Sampson gets removed as head coach today, a good lot of players are threatening not to finish out the season.

To wit (pardon the heavy blockquote):

According to the sources, after Greenspan informed five selected players — namely D.J. White, Eric Gordon, Kyle Taber, Lance Stemler and Adam Ahlfeld — of his decision to replace Sampson he called a meeting with the entire team in an attempt to “prepare” them for Friday’s official announcement that Sampson would either be suspended or terminated in time for the Hoosiers’ weekend game at Northwestern. But before Greenspan finished his speech, the sources said an unidentified player stood up and insisted “if Sampson ain’t coaching, we ain’t playing” and that Greenspan responded with what he thought was a rhetorical question.

“Greenspan asked if he should just cancel the whole season,” one source said. “And the player told him ‘We don’t care what you do. But if Sampson ain’t coaching, we ain’t playing.’ And then they just walked out.”

[ ... ]

According to the sources, Greenspan asked Sampson to resign Thursday night but Sampson — who was alleged in a report released last week to have committed five major NCAA rules violations — rejected the request. The sources said it now appears Sampson is daring the school to fire him and that such a move would almost certainly lead to a lawsuit …

A few things here: it’s nice to see the players sticking up for their coach; I can respect that. But in a season that I still very much think can have life post-Sampson, this would be dreadful for us fans if their threats ring true. And as far as Sampson is concerned? Of course he’s going to fight this to the bitter end. Why would he not? This is how the man rolls.

Lastly, from the typewriter of Andy Katz: IU did not make a decision on Sampson until this morning and Greenspan is talking it over with Michael McRobbie and crew presumably now. A statement — not a presser — is expected later today.

Jenn Sterger explains what a Sampsonite is

by in Media | February 20th, 2008

This video (via EC) is amusing for a number of reasons. Let us ordered list the ways:

  • Jenn Sterger is no longer a cowgirl. She is now “the Sports Babe.” I am not sure if she has taken a step forward or backward on the evolutionary chain with this name change. One can never tell.
  • Whoa! How did she change clothes like that!
  • Sterger asks Sampson what the Sampsonites are all about. He wishes he was still getting these softballs.
  • Eric Gordon. Silent. So silent.
  • This was filmed during and around the Iowa game at home Jan. 23. It was put onto YouTube Feb. 14, two days after ESPN announced the NCAA’s major violation charges against Sampson. Timing: it is everything.

D.J. White Update: Nothing yet

by in Media | February 17th, 2008

The latest from IU Athletics Media Relations:

Indiana senior All-American candidate D.J. White is being treated for an injured left knee and underwent an MRI later today than expected (medical equipment issues). IU’s medical staff is awaiting further evaluation of the test. No further determination regarding his playing status for Tuesday’s game against Purdue has been made.

So yes: I suppose that really isn’t an update … or at least one we want to hear. It was encouraging that White walked off the court on his own accord and came back to the bench under his own power, but until it’s evaluated by an MRI, I guess we won’t know for sure.

Here’s to hoping White can play Tuesday. Even though the team thrived without him last night and I have faith we can put up a fight without him against Purdue, we’re kidding ourselves if we don’t think we need White on the court Tuesday night. It’s the biggest game of the year; we need all weapons locked and loaded.

Katz via source: Sampson’s tenure is on game-by-game basis

by in Media | February 14th, 2008

sampson_court.jpegThose of you hoping Kelvin Sampson is cut loose sooner rather than later by IU — and the more I read today, the more I think it makes more sense to do so because the NCAA is likely to come down less hard on us, although I still feel horrible for the players’ sake — may soon get your wish. Andy Katz of ESPN.com is reporting a source has indicated to him Sampson is being evaluated game-to-game.

Discussions about whether Sampson would coach Wednesday night’s game against Wisconsin went on as late as the afternoon preceding the game, according to a source close to the situation.

A source told ESPN.com that there is an air of uncertainty on the staff regarding Sampson’s status and whether he’ll finish out the season. Sampson met with his staff Tuesday into the night and again on Wednesday.

Indiana (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) could choose to suspend Sampson from coaching games while it figures out its options without having to fire him. The Hoosiers have home games Saturday against Michigan State and Tuesday against Purdue.

Larry MacIntyre, the assistant vice president for university communications, said IU president Michael McRobbie has met with the school’s legal counsel, the board of trustees and athletic director Rick Greenspan.

MacIntyre said there are no plans for a news conference Thursday or Friday, but he said he’s “not going on vacation” and is prepared to quickly organize one if needed.

So yes: there’s the latest news flying out there on Sampson’s status. It should come as no surprise to any of us.

Surprise, surprise: Sampson ducks questions about major violations

by in Commentary | February 13th, 2008

iamkelvin.jpgJust as he did four months ago when IU’s self-reported violations came to light, Kelvin Sampson dodged questions about his latest violations this evening in the post-game press conference. Doug Wilson of the Hoosier Scoop has the details:

Sampson has read a short statement saying he’s aware of the NCAA statement of allegations and will make no further comment after tonight about them until after the NCAA’s process is complete.

Sampson said he never intentionally misled the NCAA investigators and he looks forward to working through the NCAA process.

He then refused to answer several questions about the allegation, saying he’ll only answer questions about tonight’s game.

Here’s one related question he did answer. He was asked what he thought about the reaction of fans tonight and said he didn’t notice it.

First thing is first: I love — well actually, love isn’t the right word, more like “am mildly annoyed” — that Sampson NEVER NOTICES THE CROWD. He’s never noticed the crowd at Illinois. And apparently, he’s never noticed the crowd at home either. (Except for at Midnight Madness when they chant “Kel-vin Samp-son;” he notices the crowd then. I believe this is called selective hearing.)

Second thing is second: I recommend you read E’s post I linked up top from October because it lays out why Sampson is obligated to answer this questions far better than I can. A small sampling: “Sorry Kelvin, but your responsibility is to run a program whose fans, whether rightfully or wrongfully, have very high-minded moral standards for their competitive athletes, and your responsibility is to run a program that complies with standard and enforced NCAA sanctions. When you fail to do that, your new responsibilities include being open and candid with the public whose trust you essentially betrayed — you are publicly paid, after all — about your massive screw up.”

Hoosiers lose nailbiter at home against Badgers

by in Recaps | February 13th, 2008

bo_ryan.jpgI’m having a hard time not starting off this recap with an expletive, but alas, I will refrain. Anyone who watched this one can tell you the drill: it was a highly contested, great game. Unfortunately, IU came out on the wrong end, losing 68-66. Brian Butch hit a lucky bank three with just a few ticks left on the clock to put Wisconsin up and Jamarcus Ellis missed a three at the buzzer that would have given IU the victory.

D.J. White started out hot, dropping six of his first six baskets. But he picked up his third foul early in the second and played a bit reserved because of it. So, Eric Gordon did his thing, taking the ball to the hoop and hitting a few shots. White finished with 17 points and seven boards, while Gordon finished with 23 points. Jason Bohannon led Wisconsin with 18 points.

The one good thing here? IU played well. This is two games in a row we can sit back and say: “Hey, we’re looking good, we’re finally coming around.” It’s just too bad it had to come in a loss. At home. The day it was announced Kelvin Sampson got slapped with major sanctions.

As a reminder, we still haven’t beaten a ranked team or anyone of real worth. (Ohio State doesn’t count.) You know, in case you were wondering out there.

It’s been a rough day to be an IU fan. Let’s just leave it at that.
