Eli Holman: Is no news…good news?

by in Media | September 27th, 2007

Eli HolmanAs we sit two weeks away from Hoosier Hysteria, there’s still no confirmation on whether Eli Holman will be eligible for the upcoming season. T-Hutch from the Indy Star talked about this topic in-depth just over a week ago and since that time, all has been quiet on the Holman front.

Most of the comments I’ve read about Holman seem to indicate that he will qualify and I remember Holman telling Jody Demling of the Louisville C-J back in early August that he’d already been cleared to play. Since that time, we’ve been told that he hasn’t been cleared and in early September he was unable to travel with the team on their trip to the Bahamas.

So the facts are what they are at this point: Eli is in school, attending classes and working out with the team. He is not, however, cleared to play by the NCAA. And Coach Sampson has refused to comment on what will happen if he doesn’t get cleared.

For our purposes, which is to analyze (and do it well by the way), I think its importance to stress how essential to the team’s success it is for Holman to play. Besides being PostmanE’s favorite player, Eli is the second best big on the roster behind D.J. White.

If he is unable to play, our frontcourt goes from looking somewhat deep to somewhat depleted. In the scenario that D.J. gets into foul trouble, it’s going to be very important to have a reliable and capable backup. And that’s exactly what Eli Holman is. He can block shots, rebound and while he is still a bit raw offensively, he can finish when he gets the ball on the block.

This is by far the most important storyline currently going on with Hoosier basketball. The more time that passes with no news, the more anxious all of us will become. Either way, we should know soon enough. Let’s just hope that the news is good for our boy Eli.

Lance Stephenson will attend Hoosier Hysteria

by in Recruiting | September 26th, 2007

The list of prospects that will be attending Hoosier Hysteria in a little over two weeks continues to grow and the biggest name yet to be announced was confirmed today by Adam Zagoria.

Lance Stephenson, from Lincoln High in Brooklyn, NY will Hoosier Hysteria on an unofficial visit. Lincoln is the same school that has produced Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair.

Stephenson is regarded as one of the top five juniors in the 2009 class by nearly every recruiting publication. He’s 6’5″, 195 pounds and is regarded as an athletic freak with an NBA-ready body. NBAdraft.net compares his game to Gilbert Arenas.

I’ll definitely check out Stephenson in December as he’s scheduled to play in a game at Freedom Hall with his Lincoln teammates.

For now, I’ll leave you with an incredible putback dunk from Stephenson via YouTube.

Hoosiers offer 2010 wing Reggie Bullock

by in Recruiting | September 26th, 2007

Reggie BullockBoth Dave Telep and Bryan Hanks have confirmed that IU has offered a scholarship to 2010 guard/forward Reggie Bullock.

Bullock is out of Kinston high school in North Carolina where last season he helped lead the Kinston Vikings to an appearance in the Class 3-A state championship game.

Kinston fell short of a state championship as Bullock scored 10 points in 18 minutes in a reserve role. You can view the boxscore from that game by clicking here.

Kinston coach Wells Gulledge told Hanks that the Hoosiers followed Bullock closely over the summer and liked what they saw enough to extend an offer on Tuesday.

Bullock is a 6’5″, 175 pounder who is also being recruited by North Carolina, North Carolina State, Texas, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Zeller talks IU visit, staying coy about recruitment

by in Recruiting | September 25th, 2007

Tyler ZellerIf you’ve got any doubt about how big the recruitment of Tyler Zeller is getting, just take a look at the sports section on the Indianapolis Star’s website. Embedded on the right side of the page is a special section called “Chasing Tyler.”

Zeller visited IU this past weekend and by my count talked to three media outlets after the visit. And unlike most recruiting stories where a kid will give some clues to where he’s leaning, Zeller is giving no indication on which school is leading the race.

Take notice, courtesy of Jeff Rabjohns of the Indy Star:

“I’m definitely taking everything in,” Zeller said. “I haven’t written everything down, but I’m trying to figure out, this school has this, but this other school has that. This school is better than that one in this, but this other school is better in that. One day, you’re going to wake up and it’s going to be, ‘I’m going there.’ I’m just kind of waiting around for that to happen.”

In other words, he’s going to take all of his visits and he’s still wide open. I’ve seen a couple posts here on the Hall asking where Zeller is leaning and I’ve been asked a few times for my opinion on where he’ll end up. To be totally honest, I’ve got no idea where this is all heading. You can legitimately make a case for all four schools in the race. Until a decision comes, just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Ebanks, Mackey land in Rise Magazine Top 50

by in Recruiting | September 24th, 2007

Devin EbanksRise Magazine recently announced their list of the top 50 players in the class of 2008. And luckily for Hoosier fans, there’s some IU flavor prominently displayed.

Devin Ebanks checks in as the No. 15 player in the class and Bud Mackey is the No. 41 player.

Washington (IN) big man Tyler Zeller, who visited IU this past weekend, is slotted in at No. 18. Kevin Jones, who will reportedly visit IU on October 12 for Hoosier Hysteria, comes in at No. 37.

Rise will release full biographies for the top 50 players in a publication called Hardwood that will be released in late October.

Also of note, here are the top five players on the list: Samardo Samuels (Louisville), Greg Monroe (undecided), Tyreke Evans (undecided), Jrue Holiday (UCLA) and Brandon Jennings (Arizona).

Confidence behind Zeller’s rise to five-star status

by in Recruiting | September 23rd, 2007

Tyler ZellerAs someone who follows recruiting very closely, the rise of Washington (IN) big man Tyler Zeller to a five-star prospect caught me a bit off guard.

Earlier this year, most recruiting services viewed Zeller as a three-star or a four-star prospect. Many would have argued for East Chicago Central’s Angel Garcia or Warren Central’s Walter Offutt as the top 2008 prospect from the state of Indiana.

However, after an off-season of improvement and strong AAU play in the spring, Zeller shot up the charts and became a high priority for several schools. Scout.com put him in their top 20 and Rivals.com put him in their top 25. His play has also made him a firm favorite for the title of Mr. Basketball.

So what was behind Zeller’s rise as a prospect? His confidence finally caught up to his potential.

“The biggest factor was, and Tyler and I’ve had conversations about this, he simply wasn’t ready,” Scout.com National Recruiting Director Dave Telep said. “When there’s a player like Tyler Zeller with a family history of size and being a high major player, you make sure you pay that guy a little extra attention. It wasn’t Tyler’s time until this year and once he seemed comfortable and confident, things just exploded for him.”

“It has happened like that for other guys in the past,” Telep added. “Andrew Bynum (now of the Los Angeles Lakers) was the same way. You always kind of knew that he was going to be a prospect. When his confidence level started equaling his potential, he really started getting good in a hurry. I think the same thing happened with Tyler.”
