2018 Indiana Basketball Recruiting Board

The 2018 Indiana Basketball Recruiting Board is a collection of information on recruits that Indiana is believed to be recruiting for its 2018 class.

Information that appears on school lists is collected from public recruit profiles on ESPN, Rivals, Scout, 247Sports and various news outlets. School lists only denote reported interest, not offers. The board should not be considered a complete list of prospects being recruited and is not endorsed by Indiana University.

If there is a prospect we should consider adding, please drop us an email at [email protected].

  • A look at some of the top recruiting targets for Indiana University basketball in the class of 2018.

  • SCHoosier

Great work..and some great potential Hoosiers. Archie et al have some hills to climb given their late start… but I have every confidence that they will make some inroads..especially in state.

  • N71

Great list of targets, talent galore. A little concerned though, if DeRon gets featured like we’re thinking he’ll be lured into the draft leaving us undersized. Otherwise Clifton will need to put on 40 pounds.

  • TomJameson

I’m hoping that DeRon really does get better like Archie described, but that he’ll stay to play through his Junior year. No guarantees though.

I’d bet that Moore starts the season with an extra 20 pounds. Hopefully that will be even better at the start of his Sophomore season.

  • Pianoroark

And even if De’Ron does stick around for his junior year (which I expect he will), we have no true backup in the post when he a) needs a rest, b) gets in foul trouble, or c) gets injured for any stretch. Moore isn’t a post player, from what I’ve seen and read on him, despite his size. Maybe he’ll develop into one. Anyway, I, too, am a little concerned and surprised not to see more post player recruitment news. But we have time, and I trust our new coaching staff. We’ll see!

  • HoosierStuckInKY

I’m with you. I think we need to get a big this year. The frontcourt is already thin and it’d be nice to have Davis take a younger big guy under his wing for a year or two before he passes the baton. Heck, let’s get 2 bigs. Hard to remember the last time we’ve had an abundance of skilled big guys.

  • VOXAC30

You make a solid point I wonder what Race Thompsons and Louis King’s true interest in IU? We may need them both at this point… which is something I could live with. They are Juniors so they may grow a little more.

  • John D Murphy

I saw a couple of nice bigs in the 2019 names, but yeah none in 2018 yet.

  • FundamentalistGuardPlay

Is Carmody the only recruit on the board who is currently without an offer?

  • viaswiss

For the first time it actually feels like we are specifically targeting certain players and have a real shot at them instead of just throwing out random offers and hoping something sticks. Very excited about the Indiana kids…Garland, Phinesee, Jallow, Hunter, Romeo. If we can land just 2-3 of them and then round it out with a big or two from “outside” then we are sitting very pretty!

  • The 2018 class is very thin nationally with big men. Only nine guys in the country who are considered a four-star or higher in the 247Composite rankings at the center position. Three of them have already committed:

  • N71

Looking at this list and suspending reality for a moment I’ll take David McCormack, 4-star, 6-10, 290 pounds. Would love to have a guy like this on our team as we were headed up to East Lancing to battle it out for first place. Hard to believe he’s in high school, looks like Lasalle Thompson when he was with the Pacers but thicker.

  • Outoftheloop

This is a great list for a Head Coach and staff in month 2! Go get 4-5 Archie!

  • Vernon Aldrich

I’d love to see us get Robby Carmody. He looks like he’s cut out of Tom Coverdale cloth, and he’s bigger!!

  • FundamentalistGuardPlay

Hey Alex, I know this doesn’t address the question of big men, but do you expect IU to extend Carmody an offer? Curious given his connection to Miller family, if IU is waiting to see where other chips might fall or if there will be an offer soon.

  • HoosierDom

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Davis was 40ish or lower in every ranking coming out of high school, he averaged 6ppg as a freshman and he isn’t particularly athletic. What about that makes people so worried he will go pro after next year? I’d love to come back and eat my words, but this talk doesn’t seem at all realistic. Even if he does excel next year, he’s still not a plus athlete and hasn’t shown much outside touch that I’ve seen – not many big men in the NBA that meet that description. I think he’s a 4 year player.

  • Ole Man

If you ever see Moore in the post, he is lost! LOL!

  • TomJameson

I don’t think he’s going to play the post like DD, but Moore does have his own skills. I think it’s possible that he’ll be a big help this year. I would rather see Moore get those relief minutes for DeRon, than to see Juwan or Collin playing center.

  • SeeingRed

Agree. We’re sitting here speculating that DD is a leave early guy with very little evidence to suggest that. He’s shown some smooth post moves, a will to get better and a great attitude, which makes him easy to like. But he hasn’t shown (yet) that he can get in great shape and play heavy minutes. He plays below the rim and isn’t a quick jumper. To me, he’s the defintion of a 4 year college program building block guy whose route to pro ball will be about effort and maximizing his physical and technical potential.

  • Dialogos68

Where are the big men? Why does IU have such a hard time recruiting bigs? IU typically has 8 or 9 shooting guards…. Why? Davis is our only legit post player this coming season. If he gets in foul trouble or had an injury, who would we turn to? Inexperienced Priller? Undersized Hartman or Morgan? If Davis has a good year, he could go pro next spring too. Hopefully Miller can change this trend!

  • Ole Man

There just aren’t that many “good” big men in the ’18 class.

  • VOXAC30

Race Thompson would be a huge get! He is the style of player that wold seem to fit in Arch’s system really well.

  • VOXAC30

I checked these guys on 247 Sports and they we are leading in recruiting with Musa and Robert. So the real question I have is what are our changes in landing any of the other kids? Is this a wish list or is it a legitament possibility we could land a couple of top 100 recruits?

  • HoosierKid

If we get Musa who surely will sign with us and one of these point guards and one of the 6’8″ power forwards it would be a solid class.

  • John D Murphy

Carmody just committed to Notre Dame.

  • THRyan

    what happened with Cole Swider?

  • Outoftheloop

I thought that IU had offered a few 6’10 and above players for the 2018 class? Was I mistaken?

  • Outoftheloop

A class of Musa, Phinesee, a big guard, a big forward and one top 25 recruit would be awesome!

  • Outoftheloop

Apparently he will go to Notre Dame.

  • John D Murphy

Eric Ayala just looks like a tough guy.

  • John D Murphy

    ‘Nova

  • David Macer

6’10” and 290 won’t cut it in a faster paced game IMHO. Just look at Issac Haas. Lose 20-25 #’s might work.

  • THRyan

    Thanks. Bummer. Really liked him.

  • IUMIKE1

And I feel pretty confident that he isn’t asking the staff to help him learn and get better at the things that would make him a more complete player at the post position. In fact I’d go as far as saying that he will be upset if that is how the majority of his minutes come about this coming season, and we all know what kind of thoughts start going through the heads of 18 and 19 year old college bball players’ when they are disgruntled about how they are being used.

  • John D Murphy

Bazley to ‘cuse. I thought we had a good chance with him.

  • VOXAC30

Musa Jallow committed to OSU over the weekend – I am not sure if I was expecting that or not only because he was a Bloomington kid. He will play right away is probably the likely reason because OSU is thin!

  • Dialogos68

Wow…. Where are the big men? With DeRon Davis, IU has one legit player to man the post…. It is my understanding that Clifton Moore is not a post player, but a stretch four who wants to shoot threes. Why is a high profile team like IU always so thin in the front court?

  • Timothy Schwartz

Robert phinisee is about a garenteed get for IU, would be great and would solidify the recruiting class… Go Hoosiers

  • Outoftheloop

Why no bio information for Devoe, Laszewski, and Hinton, all with IU offers and we have been following for weeks now?

  • Glad to see Phinisee sneak back into the Top 100, because I’d love for Archie’s first four recruits to all be 4-star, Top 100 players. I know some people would rather see Garland as PG, but I’d be plenty happy with Phinisee and wouldn’t look back if he commits. I’m not quite as sure that he’s a guaranteed get, though.

  • I hate purdon’t

I agree Mark Coppock. I would rather have a 4 year pg rather than a 1 and done. IMO I would rather have a 4 star 4 year pg over a 1 and done anytime. All the rest of the positions it’s a different story.

  • Ole Man

Nothing is guaranteed when you’re working with 17 year old kids. Just sayin’

  • Ole Man

I’d take Garland over Phinisee in a heartbeat.
    One, I don’t think he’s a one and done.
Two, he elevates the other players on the court.
    Three, there’s a reason he’s a five star!
Four, loads of good/great PGs in the ’19 class.

  • Yeah, we’ve discussed this a couple of times. The simple fact is that I think Phinisee is more likely to commit to IU than Garland, and so it might very well end up a moot point. And so debating if Garland or Phinisee is better might be academic, and I’m just saying that I’m not going to be too upset if Phinisee commits rather than Garland. A few years from now when Archie has had more time to recruit 5-star players like Garland, then I’ll probably feel differently.

  • VegasHoosier

Why in the world are we still going after forwards…..especially 3 Stars?

  • Timothy Schwartz

Who do u guys think the the 2018 class will be?

  • StraightOuttaBtown

Phinisee and Duke most likely round out the class. Romeo is headed to Durham or Louisville.

  • Timothy Schwartz

Who will the last recruit be?

  • StraightOuttaBtown

If it isn’t Romeo, which my guess is it will not be, it will be Duke or Forrester. Size needed

  • Timothy Schwartz

    Oh ok thank you!
