Film Session: Louisville

In its loss to Louisville on Saturday afternoon, Indiana missed all 12 of its 3-point attempts in the second half.

While some came late in the shot clock or were contested, a healthy amount came off nice offensive sets where Indiana shooters were able to catch and shoot in rhythm, but they just missed.

We’ll take a look at these good looks that missed in the latest edition of Film Session:

The Cardinals set up in zone. Al Durham Jr. has the ball on the perimeter as Juwan Morgan flashes to the middle:

The pass comes. Robert Johnson is open on the right wing:

Morgan turns and makes the pass:

Johnson steps into the shot and lets it go on the Quentin Snider closeout:

It misses. Louisville grabs the board and scores on the other end to go up three:

I noticed Rojo just standing in the corner on a bunch of posessions, like he wasn’t even supposed to be involved in the offense. Is this by design for him to get open looks on a kick out? He’s usually more aggressive

Thanks for assembling this. It really points to how poor shooting and offense leads to other consequences like fouls and run outs by the opponent. Not sure where we go from here. Each player brings one thing but hurts us in another area. I really wish Zach’s shot would have gone in. He is not ever going to score a lot, but if he could make one or two shots per game it would make it more difficult on opposing defenses.

  • You know, ultimately, I think this is just basketball: sometimes the shots don’t fall and you lose, even as you do many other good things.

Two of the guys Crean thought would be really good shooters for us (GG, CJ) are gone. RJ has somehow lost his confidence. DG is very streaky and AD is not very good from the outside. Hopefully we have some good shooting coming in next year.

I never thought I would see the day when IU didn’t have good outside shooters. Brutal really. I have confidence that Coach Miller will resolve that soon.

Good point about IU losing the guys expected to be 3 point shooters. AD is shooting over 36% from outside though, which isn’t great, but not terrible. Good enough for 3rd on the team at the moment. Small sample size but not sure we can say he is not very good yet.

And if that is by design, maybe IU should get away from that because he isn’t hitting those outside shots.
