Looks like Wisconsin is pretty good again this year (sigh). And we are pretty bad (sigh). Living in Madison for almost 20 years now … its just, so irksome.

And they don’t even have elite recruits.

It drives me berserk! Thought we had em’ here when Zeller was a freshman. We had it, then Zeller go pushed at the end (as I recall), no call, they get a bucket and win. Of course when we had Gordon, his left wrist was in bad shape when IU came here, and people were like “why are you making such a fuss about Gordon, “we” shut him down pretty good as predicted.” Ughhhhhhh

It is going to be a rough season and probably the first 3 yrs. If you look at Wisky they play great team defense that has been taught and instilled for 20+ years. The previous coaching staff at IU wanted more possessions and taught that style of play for 9 yrs. It doesn’t take elite talent to play great team defense. I am very excited about the programs direction Coach Miller was a great hire.

I feel your pain. It drives me nuts that IU never seems to beat them in bball or football. Don’t forgot about that OT game in Madison 2 years ago. Nearly broke through that night. I believe Yale didn’t have their star guard that night, so im still holding reservations on Wisco. They have 15 Xavier and 25 Baylor in the next week and then travel to Charlottesville to play UVA. So we will see just how good they are in the next two weeks. Only two games played. Plenty of time for teams improve/regress.

  • Vernon Aldrich

    I love this guy…

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Going to be tough to beat Seton Hall. Defensively IU better play well. If they play the lack of D like they did against Indiana State this game could end really bad for IU.

Here are the 247composite rankings of the wiscy starters: Happ 175, Trice 334, Iverson 332, Pritzl 102, Van Vliet (couldnt find a ranking)

I really believe it is more about the players and getting the type of guys Archie wants. I’m talking about talent, character, drive to succeed, all of it. Players are only at any school for 4 years max so the “instilled for 20+ years” thing is overstated. The players only have a few months or years at best to figure it out. So the question is why is it that at Wiscy guys (for example) come in and almost immediately “get it”, play hard, and win? No reason that can’t happen at IU with the right coach, coaching the right system, getting the right type of players. That does take time you are right.

The Sconnies make the blood boil so bad I couldn’t even do the right thing and support the conference when they played Duke for the cup.

  • Tenacious Newt

so I take it Van Vliet isn’t related to the kid who played for Wichita? Only heard the name in the background when I was setting up for the Howard tipoff.

  • BeatDuke

I actually rooted for UW in the final as I hate Duke sooo much. I was a student in 91/92 when we lost to Duke in the final four (up by as many as 12 in first half, before Hurley hit like 3 3’s before half to close it to a 3 point game). Anyway, changed my name from BeatWiscosin to BeatDuke before that Final game a few years ago and have not changed it back. Doesn’t matter, we can’t beat either one of those teams.

  • IdahoHoosier

    Different name and spelling.

  • PS IU

You are thinking of: Fred VanVleet who now plays for Toronto Raptors (same as OG).

Well that was the idea behind instilling Gard as the HC after Ryan. Continuity continuity and more continuity. Hiring Archie was Glass’ way of saying the last thing Indiana Basketball needed was continuity from the Crean Era. Wisconsin also has a recruiting monopoly on the northern MW with an ever faltering Minnesota/Nebraska where as Indiana has been giving away HS recruits (esp in basketball) to [insert blue-blood here] since Montross.

In theory Indiana could have Jackson, Wilkes, Bluiett and McIntosh starting tonight. Instead, we let them all walk.

Full Disclaimer: Raised and went to school in Bloomington, went to Wisco for my graduate degree.

I remember that one. I was ‘98-02 myself but that was a spring break scar nonetheless.

Instilled for 20+ years is the environment that Bo Ryan promoted. You are right in getting the right players to play for that style of play. Look at the Bob Knight era hard nosed play is what IU was known. Archie will get it done.
