2018 point guard Darius Garland commits to Vanderbilt

  • 11/13/2017 12:30 pm in

Class of 2018 Brentwood Academy (Tenn.) five-star point guard Darius Garland committed to Vanderbilt on Monday in an announcement on ESPN.com.

Garland chose the Commodores over Indiana, Kentucky and UCLA. The 6-foot-1 point guard also had offers from Duke, Kansas and several others.

The No. 10 player nationally, according to the 247Composite, visited Bloomington for Hoosier Hysteria and grew up in Indiana before moving to Nashville as a seventh grader.

Landing Garland is a significant recruiting development for Vanderbilt, which is in its second season under Bryce Drew.

The Commodores are also in the mix for two other five-star recruits in the class of 2018: Simisola Shittu and Romeo Langford.

Indiana signed four class of 2018 prospects in the November signing period – Jerome Hunter, Robert Phinisee, Damezi Anderson and Jake Forrester. The Hoosiers are also in the final three for Langford along with Vanderbilt and Kansas.

I think so. Star focus for 2018 might be the wrong thing to do.

  • bball at nick’s

I agree, but I think we could be a top 10-15 in 3 years.

  • Ms hoosier

I agree Archie got in a little late on DG, and RL but I believe he will get a couple 5 stars for 2019. He’s just too good of a coach!!

  • IdahoHoosier

You try to get the best players you can get. To suggest otherwise is silly. If you can get Lebron James for 1 game you take him. If you get Langford for 1 year, IU will take him. And has recruited him which proves the point.

  • bball at nick’s

You could make the same argument about us. What do we have to show to a 5 star?

  • bball at nick’s

By the way, we already have our 5-star: Justin Smith.

  • IdahoHoosier

Nothing personal, but it sounds like you made your academic decision based on being a fan of basketball, which isn’t a great idea. And I hope you feel your best is still to come, because otherwise you peaked in college, which is sad.

  • Ms hoosier

    Al Durham!!

  • MrNobody

Never thought of it in those terms but now that you said it I completely agree. Rankings only mean so much. In four years they’re completely different players. Especially if recruited for a specific system or role.

  • MrNobody

I think we’re going to see UK fade. They had their run and not as much as most thought to show for it.

  • Hoosierkamp

OK , 2 or 3. My point is still the same. It’s important

  • Hoosierkamp

Interesting, where did you see that?

  • bball at nick’s

    We have two 5-stars!

  • david r

We’ll be fine. I hate one and dones anyway. Archie is building a culture of consistency and accountability. Romeo would be nice, but not a must have, in my opinion. Doing things the right way always pays off in the long run. That is why Archie will not fail. The Indiana pipeline of talent is also consistent. Let’s not get greedy. We have one of the best recruiting classes in the country coming in next year without Langford or Garland. I want the next Collin Hartman, or the next Derek Elston. That the secret ingredient. Just look at what Butler and Creighton have done without 5 star talent. Yes, you need studs to beat Duke and Kansas, etc., but the studs will come to B-town, just wait and see.

And we will use the available scholarship for a very decent recruit, maybe a junior-college transfer. Wasn’t Dean Garrett a junior-college transfer?

  • Ms hoosier

I watched Kentucky play this weekend and Al looked as good as any guards they had!!!!

  • Brad

Let’s be honest. For Archie to even have us in the final 3 speaks a lot to how hard he works and how much appeal he has as a head coach. Broadcaster Crean wasn’t even in the ballpark with a lot of these 5 star players.

  • bball at nick’s

You poor baby! Are you needing attention? Here’s a virtual HUG ( )/

  • bball at nick’s

    I hope so.

  • steelhoosier

Garland is from Nashville, Bryce Drew played in the pros. He knows the ropes. I just think it’s a good fit for a home town kid.

  • steelhoosier

I guess the jury is still out on anyone recruiting 5 stars. I’m just saying like Archie, Bryce Drew comes from a basketball family. Has a good repoir and until the gavel is swing I wouldn’t put him in the same cell as pitino

  • Piker

Thought he had until the 15th

  • bball at nick’s

Yeah, I forgot. He might very well announce by then. His dad did say, after all, that Romeo could wait until spring or could make a decision any day.

  • Piker

Not you steel but all this talk about something fishy going on with Bryce and 5 stars is strange. Hometown kid wants to go play for a good coach, good school and bring along some buddies and now Bryce is doing something fishy. And then others talking about Scott, next it will be Homer cheated at Valpo bringing his own kids in. Nonsense

  • Mark Bando

Yep, rankings mean nothing if the players arent winners that show toughness and will sacrifice for the good of the team.

  • steelhoosier

Amen piker, I pretty sure Darius’s dad Winston after playing 9 years in the NBA isn’t going to let his son get rapped up in anything “fishy”. He openly admits his son is better than he was and he played in the big show. I would have loved for Darius to come back to Indiana for college ball. Had there been a top level travel team in Gary he may have stayed in Indiana. Just hoping Romeo commits closing out a top notch recruiting class.

  • Ole Man

Yes, but he cannot sign after Wednesday.

  • Ole Man

He as asked by a reporter and that was his answer.

  • Hoosier PD

    Yep.

  • RonG

Really! What the heck was Cody Zellar a 1star. By the way Justin is a Crean recruit and I guess Yogi just sucked! BE REAL !!!!

  • Brad

Be real? UK gets more 5 star recruits in a year than Broadcaster Crean had in 9 years.

  • calbert40

    You’re moving goalposts.

  • calbert40

Let’s not kid ourselves. Having Garland would have been really nice, but we do already have a top 100 PG coming in next year’s class. He wanted to stay close to home, and there is nothing wrong with that. Good luck at Vandy.

  • calbert40

A friend of mine is the play by play broadcaster for a conference opponent of McCutcheon, and I asked him about RP. He said he is tough as it gets, and you just about can’t guard him. I’m very happy to have him aboard next year.

  • E Foy McNaughton

I Sincerely hope that Archie considers moving AD into the starting lineup. If we are rebuilding anyway, let’s get the young man some experience. He’s out playing JN anyway.

  • E Foy McNaughton

    Interesting – thanks

  • INUnivHoosier2

Did Riley dump your sister or something? You’re awful salty.

  • BannersOnTheWall

Garland would have been a great get for the program, but after watching the first two games of this season, I am just thrilled that we will be adding some lengthy wings to close out on shooters in the ’18 class. Plus, this could provide more playing time for Phinisee to learn the point in Archie’s system.

That being said, I am still hoping for Romeo!

  • Donnie Vick

Well he already has a year under his belt. Applying this logic, you should be questioning Archie more because he was in the running for 2 5 stars in 18 and more in 19.

  • Donnie Vick

    He looked good last night

  • Donnie Vick

He would have played for Bryce

  • Donnie Vick

Is Wisconsin on steroids averaging 50 points?

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

John, Thanks for that. I was nervous that many “posters” would not agree about Robert Phinese. I am ecstatic he is at IU. Darius wasn’t a must in my mind because of Robert Phinese.

  • unclekerfuffle

Plus, based on his first hand experience with the game and the program, I doubt that, outside of just a few of us (myself not included), his insights are more on target than the average fan.

  • Michael Rizzo
  • RonG

    Thank you calbert40!!!

  • Michael Rizzo

I kinda respect the kid a little more for braving an up and coming program, and wanting to be that hometown kid.
Would have I loved to see him in candystripes-yup.
Do I think we did anything wrong not to get him-nope.

  • sarge

It’s the Cody Zeller effect. If we landed Romeo and he stayed for more than a year, it would have a massive impact.

  • Vernon Aldrich

And he looks like a developing force…

  • VOXAC30

I like Darek Elston but in no way shape or means do I want a team of Elston’s. I would like a team of Jeff Newton’s, and Dane Fife’s. I do see your overall point though in you have better results upper class men. I will contend that you do need at least one 5 star a year to keep the pressure off the rest of the team.
