Former Indiana forward Troy Williams, who left after his junior season and was undrafted in June’s NBA draft, has found a home in the league.

After a terrific preseason for the Memphis Grizzlies, Williams has earned a spot on the team’s 15-man opening night roster.

The news was reported Saturday afternoon by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

In six preseason games for the Grizzlies, Williams averaged 13.2 points, four rebounds and 1.7 steals in 25.4 minutes per game. He shot 52.1 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from behind the 3-point line.

After playing with Phoenix in the NBA Summer League, Williams signed a guaranteed deal for $150,000 with Memphis to come to training camp. Entering camp, Williams was expected to end up with the D-League affiliate for Memphis, the Iowa Energy.

In 99 carer games for the Hoosiers, Williams averaged 11.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Good for him. I am happy for him. I hope he continues to do well and works himself into a good NBA career. I’m certainly looking forward to possibly seeing him in some of the games.

Happy for him! Not surprised given how well he has played lately. Now is his $540K rookie salary fully guaranteed?

Way to go Troy!! Now just don’t let those nerves get in the way of a great opener.

Congrats TW ! You earned it. This kids game is an excellent fit for the NBA . I could see him in the pros for the next 10 years

Good for him it all depends if he gets guaranteed for year or if he is on a 15 day contract I think.

Way to go Troy!! I will admit and stated that I didn’t think he should of left IU early but I was seriously wrong!!! Congrats to Troy Williams.

Maybe now he’ll be on 2K.

Congrats Troy! I knew that you would be playing in the NBA. Keep working hard and stay hungry.

Congrats to Troy. NBA a much better place for him..as long as he hustles and hits some threes..should be ok. Can’t say I’m gonna miss his TO’s at IU but always thought he had a better shot at pro ball…where personal discipline often goes by the wayside with the wide openn play.

  • When Troy was under control he was such a talent for IU. I will missed some of his spectacular plays. What we witnessed at IU was amazing at times. Sure you can have control players, Like Alford, Brian Evans..etc. Give a guy that can create his own shot, play D and transcend on higher play level

Awesome Troy. I doubted your decision. Keep proving me wrong.

A pleasant surprise, to be sure. Three-year head case with All-Star talent in spite of himself made good in a big way. Hope he sticks for the long run and can challenge for the starting 3 spot, in time.

In other news, where’s the story about Yogi’s getting cut from BRN?? This elephant in the room gets no mention here or in the comments by “fans”? I called it from the moment he signed the partial, but no one wanted to hear it. Silence is golden. And deafening.

  • You’re a hero.

Nice job Troy! You put everything on the line and pulled it out! You have the tools to be a starter in Memphis! The Nets didn’t really give Yogi the full shot to make the roster. They had 15 under contract and Yogi was number 16. Stay aggressive Yogi! Your number will be called before March! When you get the opportunity be calm and forceful. The League is your destiny!
