Tom Crean met with the media on Friday afternoon at Cook Hall to preview the start of the 2016-2017 season and also to provide injury updates on several players.

Weelllll, that part of Crean’s intro about CH should remove any doubt about whether or not “he” thinks we will miss CH. The things that we will miss due to him being out may not show up in the box score, but he will be missed in more ways than one.

  • Seeing CTC almost choke up talking about CH reminds me why his players love him the way they do. I think we’ll see that in practice this season.

  • JM isn’t cleared for a few more weeks? Dang it.

  • BL4IU

and McFly had surgery. Only frontline player that MAY not have dealt with an injury this offseason is TB. Wow! Knew that shoulder surgery was serious business; easy to interpret “a few more weeks” as meaning JM won’t start the season active. Feeling a slow start coming. Just hope we can get everyone (except maybe CH) healthy before the BIG season.

  • Yeesh. Looks like my “*if we’re healthy” caveat will indeed have some weight this season. I was likely unreasonably confident until now. I think you’re right–it’ll be a slow start to the season. I’ll be preparing myself to combat the negativity that will be sure to raise its ugly head if we don’t start out strong.

Hate the fact that we won’t be able to have all the key guys at full go for early season practice. McFly needs to work with these guys because with Collin out, he figures to get some minutes. If he and JM truly are back and unrestricted in practice in 2 weeks, and DD is not limited, that gives us 4 more weeks to get ready for Kansas. Not the end of the world but not ideal. We need to be competitive in that game to get the season off right.

  • (Not so) Berned Out

What a downer. We haven’t started the season, and we’re already spent and apologetic? We haven’t run up and down the court yet?

  • Justin Beard

We’re going to have to have some good leadership this year.

  • (Not so) Berned Out

Instead of choking up he should model strength, leadership and tenacity. And optimism that someone else will step up.

  • TomJameson

I agree Mark, 100%. CTC shows many leadership qualities to “his” kids every day, but sometimes they really & truly appreciate it that the coach cares that deeply about their well being. Nothing wrong at all with showing a little emotion for the well being of his team, and players.

  • TomJameson

And now the optimistic steps in … albeit a little less optimism after this interview. 🙂

I hated hearing about JM, and while I do think there is a very good chance he’ll be starting slow, he should still have a month (maybe more) of practicing before the start of the season … and a couple of exhibition games before the first big game.

McSwain is a surprise. Crean said a couple of weeks for him, so I’m thinking clearing up some scar tissue. That’s not too bad.

All in all, BL4IU, I’m getting closer and closer to your level of worried. lol

  • SCHoosier

Well all that was sobering. Clearly with the injuries the Hoosiers are ranked too high at this point in time…IMO. Lot of time before the Kansas game but a three guard line up is looking pretty obvious.

  • BL4IU

JM won’t be cleared for contact activities (e.g. scrimmaging) for a “few weeks”. First exhibition game is in one month so don’t see how he’ll have a “month (maybe more) of practicing before the start of the season”. Based on Coach’s comment, I’ll be very surprised if he’s active when the season starts.

  • Berned Out

What is happening to our country? Overworked and underachieving.

  • Berned Out

If the problem is injury, then our back court will not be spared.

  • pcantidote

It also makes me nervous about CH’s timeline.

  • Donnie Vick

That is leadership. Weep with them that weep. I think I read that in a book somewhere.

  • pdhoosier

JM is an absolute beast. He played WITH the injury down the stretch last year and won the summer warrior award. He’s working. He wont need much “prep” as he knows the system and is probably eagerly awaiting release to go flourish. Sidenote, the fact that Freddie was mentioned “in passing” makes me feel it’s minor and hopefully just a hiccup.

My real take away is thatthe ppre-season, as hyped as it is, beeds tto be taken woth a grain of salt, especially after losong collin, as oposed to last year. We can be epic down the stretch but not out of the gate. We have to be prepared to hit our stride much later if the injury bug really is alive. Love this squad regardless!

  • TomJameson

Please excuse me, time is just flying by and the first exhibition is closer than I realized. (Nov 1st). Kansas on Nov 11th. pdhoosier is correct about how tough JM is, and about the summer warrior award, and about how he knows the system. Pretty sure JM isn’t just sitting on the sidelines watching everybody else play, he is doing drills, just not full contact.

FWIW, I think he’ll play limited minutes in the exhibition games to just get in and play some … maybe 8-10 minutes. Kansas could see an uptick, but pretty sure that even in that game minutes will be “regulated” for a few players.

I would rather lose to Kansas, than lose a player to injury.

I like seeing Crean show support for the football team. One of the IUFB podcasts, and I won’t name names, insinuated that Crean did not want to see Kevin Wilson succeed at Indiana but as I recall, Crean has always shown a lot of support for the football program here. Glad to see that continue.

  • Arch Puddington

I had Hartman figured as a starter. We will miss him both in and out of the box score.

  • Berned Out

Don’t spread rumors about Crean being against Kevin Wilson, even if it’s via someone else. If you can’t name names then don’t even bring it up. I have never heard Crean criticize Wilson.

  • Indiana_Banners

You must struggle with reading comprehension

  • Berned Out

Why don’t you tell us which podcast “insinuated that Crean did not want to see Kevin Wilson succeed at Indiana”?

  • Berned Out

No one is weeping except Crean. LOL.
