Sophomore OG Anunoby, junior James Blackmon Jr., junior Robert Johnson and associate head coach Tim Buckley met with the media on Thursday afternoon at Cook Hall to provide an offseason update as the Hoosiers gear up for the start of practice.

A number of issues were discussed, including health updates, the progress of Thomas Bryant, IU’s non-conference schedule and more.

I would trust all my secrets with OG. That guy would never give up a word to an interrogator! Still seems like a pretty humble group of guys ready to play.

Liked hearing this from Buckley –> “… stick to being a really good passing team and playing good team basketball …”
and —> “… our collective intent as a team defensively has gotten so much better over the past year, we’re going to continue to build on that…”

Sounds like recoveries are going really well.
Sounds like players are stepping up to fill voids in leadership roles in different ways.
Sounds like abilities/skills are improving with a lot of hard work.
Sounds like they are hungry for success!!.
I’d like to monitor the speech class the OG is taking … if he is. lol

  • OG: “Yeah, what they said.” Love it.

Sounds like a few players are going to be pushing right up against the start of the season in terms of being 100% healthy, but that’s probably encouraging given how things looked at the end of last season. I remember us discussing a few injuries that were looking like players might not be ready to go until well after the first game.

Can’t wait for the season to start. I think this is going to be close-knit, hard-working team that’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Recoveries may be going well but I was surprised to learn RJ and others (guessing JM; not sure who else) are not cleared to go 100%. Inside two months til Kansas; hoping like hell we’re 100 and all have had adequate time to practice before the 11th.

Feel like RJ is a natural leader. JBJ genuinely seems anxious to get it on and is clearly trying to step up as a leader (like YF).

Happy to hear Buckley suggest TB and DD will find time on the floor together.

  • TomJameson

My ears perked up when I heard Buckley “suggest” that as well. He backed that suggestion up by talking about how much better they will be in getting the ball inside. One can only imagine.

I thought they were all cleared as well, but Buckley did mention that from what those players are doing, it’s hard to tell they aren’t cleared. Sure they are still practicing, just not full contact.

This could really be a very fun team to watch this year!

Mark, I think all the players will be healthy and ready to play. I’ve been getting the idea that the staff is just taking all the time they can, and are just bringing the players back as slow as possible. Buckley did say that they have to throw those guys off the floor sometimes, just to slow them down. Hahaha. Liked hearing that.

Tom, I have faith just can’t remember the last time we had so many key players coming back at the same time off serious injuries that required surgery. Remember reading the description of the surgery RJ had and thinking, that could be worse than JBJ’s ACL.

No doubt this will be a very fun team to watch (develop and play); when healthy 🙂

Not saying I don’t have any worries. lol

I’m pretty certain that the minutes will be regulated for those guys in the beginning. Especially in light of Buckley’s comments about the “other” players getting a lot more minutes in the pre-season.

So while it looks like the “rehabbers” will be eased back into the lineup, it might be a tougher game with Kansas because of the limited minutes from those guys. Thank goodness we have a deep bench.

One thing though, I now see JN starting the season as the PG. I fully expect PG duties to be shared between those two throughout the season, but in the beginning I think it’ll be mostly JN, just to take is easy on RJ.

These guys are ready to prove something. They are hungry. They look intense and focused during this interview! Can’t wait for November!

JBJ say’s you will see! Will be playing with a chip on his shoulder. NICE!!!

New sand pit video posted on Twitter today. Appears all were participating (including RJ) which was awesome to see. Probably just being cautious with RJ. Give the ankle as much time as possible to heal before tip off. No need risk rolling it in practice until they’re absolutely certain he’s 110%.

Agree, very likely they’ll ease RJ back in. RJ had some nice comments about JN in the video.

On the bright side, all new guys are healthy and both of the players who really need to knock off rust are as well. With it being those two players, with their skill sets and natural abilities, I’m not overly concerned.

Rob is our most experienced guard and probably knows the system better than anyone, and Juwan just came in and fit beautifully.

Where did you read about RJs surgery?
