Five-star Kris Wilkes sets date for official visit to Indiana

  • 08/25/2016 8:15 am in

Class of 2017 North Central forward Kris Wilkes, one of Indiana’s top recruiting targets, has set a date for his official visit to Bloomington.

As reported by Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star and also shared on Twitter by Mike Peterson, coach of the Indy Hoosiers, Wilkes will be in Bloomington for a visit from September 30 through October 2.

Wilkes will also take official visits to Illinois on the weekend of September 9-11 and to UCLA on the weekend of September 23-25. Additionally, Wilkes will host Xavier for an in-home visit on September 13.

UConn is the other school that Wilkes is considering, but no visit date there has been announced.

There will be football games on campus during each of the three official visits that Wilkes has planned. Illinois hosts North Carolina on September 10, UCLA hosts Stanford on September 24 and Indiana hosts Michigan State on October 1.

Indiana has recruited Wilkes for more than three years and was the first school to offer him a scholarship.

He’s ranked the No. 17 prospect nationally according to the 247Composite. As a junior at North Central, Wilkes averaged 22.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Over the summer, the 6-foot-8 forward played with the Indy Hoosiers, an Under Armour sponsored grassroots program, in the UA Association finals in Atlanta. He also tried out for the USA Basketball U18 team, was a core Indiana Junior All-Star, attended Steph Curry’s camp in California and participated in the Under Armour All-America Camp in Charlotte.

Ok, the stage is set. Time for IU to really impress and keep this young Hoosier at home! This guy is going to be a stud in our system and I don’t see him being in college very long. Whichever choice you make KW, best of luck to you at the next level and may you have a great pro career.

    and now we wait…tick,tick,tick…

more than a little frustrating to see ucla leap so far ahead in the crystal ball predictions.

  • sarge

UCLA doesn’t have the team or program IU has at the moment. We are still climbing the ranks, I am not so sure they are getting better. Time will tell, but I sure hope KW sees the benefits of staying a Hoosier!

To my friends of ITH who live in central, east and southern Indiana. I hope you and your families are alright due to the horrible weather conditions yesterday.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Please come to IU Kris Wilkes!!!!!

  • Hoosierkamp

I cannot understand the Xavier competition. I live in Cincinnati…. its a pretty lame campus, Mack has no track record of putting guys in NBA, and its not exactly a top tier education either (It is fine, but IU offers plenty of benefits)

But Xavier is making big strides with Wilkes and appear to have Scruggs in the bag… or close to it…… Not encouraging

He is also considering Illinois? They may not have the same coaching staff next season.

Dear Kris – Help cut the ribbon at the newly remodeled Assembly Hall on Sept 30th and have them show you where they’re going to hang your championship banner.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

i dunno, just read an article the other day about their incoming class. it ain’t too shabby at all. they could be primed for a big season

  • sarge

I really liked TJ, I still hope he does well, even though he picked someone else.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

i’m amazed (and thankful) that nobody got hurt in that starbux. however, there are reports that the collapse demolished all the yanni and john tesh cd’s for sale on the checkout counter. bummer

Interesting you brought that up. Here is an excerpt from an article written yesterday by Garry Parrish on CBS Sports:

    2. The early signing period is still three months
away, so the rankings will change. But it is interesting that, right
now, seven of the top 10 classes in the country, according to 247Sports, belong to schools that did not play in last season’s NCAA Tournament. They are No. 1 Auburn, No. 2 Washington, No. 3 UCLA, No. 6 Illinois, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 TCU and No. 10 Creighton.

    3. Even more interesting is the fact that four of the schools with top-10
classes — Washington, UCLA, Illinois and Arkansas — are led by coaches who might be on those Hot Seat lists that popup each
preseason, which is huge. Here’s why: schools rarely fire coaches who
have great classes set to enroll, meaning what Lorenzo Romar, Steve
Alford, John Groce and Mike Anderson get done in November might buy them another year no matter what happens in January, February and March.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

I read that and I do not agree with the last sentence Parrish wrote. Groce’s players are still getting in trouble at Illinois and they have a new AD. Thanks Tcuomo.

  • Tcuomo

I tend to agree with you as well. Especially when you consider the new AD angle. I think Alford might be on his way out soon too. Still, i remember sometime back in 2012-13 Jabari Parker came out said that if Bruce Weber was fired, he would no longer consider Illinois.

  • I am Baby Cakes

    Because Xavier is good?

  • I am Baby Cakes

Well at least he isn’t going to Arizona before us. Or it’d be over.

  • RDD#76

What do all those schools have in common its immediate playing time and that’s what most 1 or 2 years than out players are looking for today.

  • ArghSonOfOhCrap

I don’t think Xavier will get Kris they have two 6′ 6′ highly touted 4 stars recruits already, also have Trevon Bleuit may still be around.

  • Hoosierkamp

Xavier is good. But IU has the in state ties, better facilities, better tv coverage, better NBA track record. Crean needs to win this battle. The in home visit plus official to XU is concerning. thats all.

  • Hoosierkamp

    very good point

  • sarge

When you say us, you are referring to you and your imaginary friend right? Because you aren’t an IU fan.

  • Hoosier Pride

I guess it’s a good thing Arizona is not in his top 5 then…

  • sarge

He created a new profile to upvote himself most likely. If they were a true fan of the team they would know that the biggest recruit in the state wasn’t even considering the team he mentioned. Not that it wasn’t already obvious.

  • marcusgresham

The crystal ball predictions are kind of goofy.
They ask about 5 guys where they think the kid is going and then base the “prediction” on that. If you asked two guys who cover UCLA, one who covers IU, one who covers XU, and one from Illinois you can likely end up with 40% prediction for UCLA and 20% for the other three. I wouldn’t be too concerned with the “science” involved there.

  • marcusgresham

Sounds like well-placed damage to me.

  • marcusgresham

Blueitt may be part of the reason Wilkes would want to go there. I’m sure they know one another.

  • marcusgresham

Maybe that was mentioned because IU has previously lost North Central players (well, at least one, Jason Gardner,) to ‘Zona.

  • I am Baby Cakes

I’m just not a hard core Homer like this site demands.

  • sarge

Flashbacks, that guy was good. It hurts to see the guys you follow and like from Indiana not stay in Indiana. Or go to Purdue.

  • John D Murphy

Romar is always the next recruit from keeping his job. It doesn’t hurt show what Marquese Chriss did there last year.

  • TomEke

Someone mentioned Jason Gardner, a North Central product we missed, below. While he became an All American at ‘Zona, it is worth remembering that his career from 99-03 coincided exactly with Tom Coverdale’s –both of them went on to play PG in Final 4’s.

However, I had an interesting time seeing who else had played at IU from North Central, some were more obvious than others:

    Evan Gordon: Transfer
    Steven Gambles: Walk On
    Eric Gordon: All-American One-and-Done
    Adam Ahlfeld: Walk On
AJ Ratliff: Dismissed (I thought this kid was going to be one of the next great ones at IU)

Honestly, with exception to Ratliff’s dismissal (of which I can’t remember the circumstances), I think we have a had a successful run with players from North Central. I always enjoy seeing players from high schools in Indiana come to play at IU, and hope that Kris Wilkes will become the next one!

  • RealHoosierFanatic

There is a % correct tracker that negates the writers from just making predictions based on the schools that write about. It’s a decent metric but not a great one. For me, it does have some reliability though.

  • Shaggy_C

Ratliff missed a semester for academic issues his senior year and saw little to no action at the start of the B1G season. IIRC, he left the team on his own accord; probably for the best, given how Sampson pretty much tarnished the careers and reputations of everyone on his final team (aside from EG, of course).

  • Bill Graham

One things that I think hurts us is our football atmosphere. I was talking to an OSU fan recently (wife’s job recently was transferred to buck town………) anyway, I posed a football argument and I said, “why would a guy like Cardall Jones go to OSU?” and he gave me a weird look. I explained, “Jones knew that they had Braxton Miller and another 5 star quarterback in JT Barrett. Why go be a third string QB at OSU when you could start instantly at IU or Illinois or etc?”…I’ve never understood this….but His answer actually made sense,

He basically noted that football recruits visit for a lot of basketball games and historically OSU has been fairly good in bball and they usually have a good crowd and a rocking atmosphere. Then it also helps that the football players live like rock stars in their town, flashing rings, riding in limos to clubs, and being the studs of the town…

Now flip the script to basketball….

Ya our guys are studs in Btown, Yes btown has a great electric atmosphere (and don’t pose the focused on only ball and grades comment…remember these boys are 18 – regardless of how focused they are half-drunk coeds in a packed football stadium and a close game (and winning) are all pluses)…but historically our football has been ehh… lots of empty seats, a close game for 3 quarters and then a disappointment ending which leaves everyone with a somber exit….not exactly ideal for hosting a recruit.

Now to end my rant: yes some visit during bball season and Hoosier Hysteria and thats awesome…but lets think about this…Wilkes is visiting during the game against Michigan State…not exactly the ideal situation (now if we happen to pull the upset then great!)…but historically there WILL be empty seats….and Wilkes will probably exit the stadium with a bunch of disappointed fans….and it also doesn’t help that Chris Mack is gonna go eat his momma’s cookin’ 2 weeks later and tell him about how his buddy Paul is practically already wearing blue.

Rant over…thanks for reading when you could have easily cleaned your whole house, made an ice sculpture, or golfed 18 holes in the time it took you to read that.

  • Bill Graham

Sarge you and I typically agree. And I think you have an excellent point about their recent status compared to ours…but I have to disagree with this year…I think they will be stacked. In my opinion, they have the best incoming point guard in the nation in Lonzo Ball…also sliding the Mr. Wavy lock’s kid to shooting guard isn’t a bad thing…not to mention the incoming TJ leaf. Now with that said…I still see them at 3rd or 4th in their conf. (unless Ball surpasses my already high expectations)

  • Bill Graham

Its the chili…thats the only logical explanation. Chris Mack is offering illegal gold star and skyline benefits to these recruits…Heck, I’d go to school in that trash can if I had free Cincy chili everyday.
