Indiana reenters AP Poll, moves up in coaches poll

  • 01/18/2016 1:30 pm in

For the first time since Nov. 23, Indiana is ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches top 25 polls.

The Hoosiers, 15-3 overall and winners of 10 straight, worked their way back into the coaches poll last week at No. 25. This week, they moved up two spots to No. 23.

And after receiving votes in the last two Associated Press polls, Indiana reentered this week at No. 25.

IU’s highest AP ranking this season so far is No. 13 and the Hoosiers were No. 14 in the third week of the USA Today coaches poll.

Indiana is 5-0 in the Big Ten and is tied with Iowa at the top of the conference standings. The Hoosiers host Illinois and Northwestern this week at Assembly Hall.

Polls are just polls, but still, this is well deserved. The team has earned it.

2 more winnable games this week. Win both and we’ll sniff the Top 20.

All I care about is 5-0

  • Young Hoosier

    What about 6-0?

    welcome back, gentlemen!

Good, but not that important anyways. There’s only one ranking that counts each season, which is after the national title game.

  • Ole Man

    Polls are important.
The players enjoy it as a reward.
No way that it is a negative.
    Helps with recruiting.
Helps keep the university in a positive public eye.

LOL. Nope, just 5-0. All the other “and 0’s” can shove it!

  • Geoff_85

Indiana is also now top 50 in the RPI (47), which is probably more important at season’s end.

Good…but this year is wide open. Its not like last year where 2-4 teams are clear cut favorites. I mean look at the conferences: The BIG is wide open at this point for the top 4-5. The ACC is wide open for the top 5 (assuming NC drops one they shouldn’t). The PAC 12 is wide open for the top 5. There are 4 teams that are all 4-1 in conf play in the BIG 12. and heck look at the Big East… Easily the best conference in basketball this year. Butler is 7th in their conference and they beat PU. Heck Marquette is 8th and they would give us a run for our money….
Be prepared to have your brackets broken early this year.

Polls do matter this late or time of the season.

Positive reinforcement for the recent play

  • This ranking is more impressive than the early-season top 15 ranking. They clawed themselves back onto the national scene after a real struggle. I like the team chemistry and general toughness they’re showing. It bodes well for the rest of the season, considering what the end of the schedule looks like. They appear to be ready for every new challenge that they face. It’s only going to get harder, but I think they have a real shot again. There are some lumps on the horizon, hope they can handle it.

    And helps with NCAA seeding..

I know this is off-topic, but I thought I’d share this story. A real Michigan wolverine has been sighted north of Detroit. Hasn’t been a sighting in 200 years. So, the Wolverines are for real, and they can be vicious. Glad to have one among us too.

I think 4 out of 5 Top 25 teams lost this past week, mainly on the road. Including pUKe. Regardless…it is not easy winning on the road in any conf.

  • Zach

This was bound to happen when the guys stack wins like they have been, but hopefully they keep grinding through the first half of the schedule like they still have something to prove. Looking forward to a couple home games this week!

Agree, this is a legitimate and well-earned ranking and agree with Ole Man, it’s important on several fronts. If TW/RJ protect the ball, barring injuries, I’m confident we can play with any team in the BIG. Love to see us get to the Iowa game undefeated. There will be a war or two along the way but we’re capable.

  • Ole Man

    I forgot that one. Thanks!

    Very cool.

Checkout CH in the pregame presser for the Illinois game. Comments re: YF are really cool.

Lots of really lopsided games in the BIG this year. Teams that rely too heavily on jump shots or have limited inside game are susceptible to getting beat bad. We’ve gotten better at balancing our scoring – inside, outside and transition. Need to keep improving on this front. Keep feeding TB and get OG more involved on the offensive end. We’ll need multiple options and all hands on deck against the better teams.

    Climate change?

  • Guyton25

Glad we’re back in but it happened on the worst week… the only thing that makes very capable unranked teams like Illinois and Northwestern more dangerous is to have a number in front of your name….

  • Dick_Pepperfield

Being unranked helps keep the team motivated. I for one rather enjoyed being unranked

  • see duke and Oklahoma

I, too, like to fly below the radar.

  • INUnivHoosier

    I didn’t know Denzel Washington’s son played for OSU…

Duke lost at home to Syracuse last night. They’ll be out of the polls. Last time Duke lost 2 in a row at home? Anyone?
