Around the Hall: Reaction to Emmitt Holt’s dismissal

  • 09/01/2015 9:59 am in

Around the Hall is recommended reading from the Inside the Hall staff.

· Rick Bozich of WDRB.com writes that it time for Indiana basketball players to make headlines on the court rather than off of it.

· Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News believes Indiana’s frontcourt has been prolific for all of the wrong reasons.

· Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com writes that Indiana coach Tom Crean was left with no choice other than to dismiss Holt from the program.

· Justin Albers of AllHoosiers writes that Holt’s dismissal is another tough lesson – for all.

· Bozich and his colleague, Eric Crawford, discuss the dismissal on WDRB’s Sports Page segment.

· In non-Holt news, ESPN.com’s Eamonn Brennan reveals his “five teams he can’t wait to see” this season and Indiana is among them.

The reasons being cited continually play up the alcohol as being front and center.
You’re right in that we will never know the truth.

BTW, I thank you, appreciate, and am respectful back for the way you discuss. We can differ in opinion without all the “garbage” being attached.

  • Ole Man

I just gave you one up above! LOL!

  • ForeverIU

Mark, puuuleeez, did you really think I was making the case for Emmitt being a “role model” for my son? I don’t even use that word; I only use it for parody. Also, no not “tongue-in-cheek” but being the positive thinker I am I choose to see your comment as a way of trying to see me on your side. I think you should give up on me; I am hopeless. LOL!

  • Ole Man

    That gave me a laugh!
    And pleased me! LOL!

  • ForeverIU

I love the idea of barf disabling 2.0’s keyboard. LOL!

  • Carolina Hoosier

Thanks. I do appreciate you kind words below. The art of disagreeing and remaining respectful is one we need a lot more of.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

you’re the only one seemingly taking race into account, forever. i said the punishment should be the same across the board, in spite of background. how is that racist??? would you prefer i patronize and pigeonhole them like you do? ain’t gonna happen. i prefer to treat them with respect

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

hey, i ain’t nothing if i ain’t good for a couple laughs now and then.

  • ForeverIU

Can I have one too?!! I got a second-hand hug from you via 2.0.

  • Ole Man

    Amen, brother.
Be careful. Whatsup will accuse you of wanting to sing great old hippie folk songs!

  • Carolina Hoosier

Sure I’m sending out virtual hugs to all the IU fans. None for pUKe fans!

  • ForeverIU

Because you used “underprivileged” as a code word for race. When really none of our players are underprivileged.

  • Ole Man

You are a beacon of light on this chat board.
Especially during this time of darkness.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

and miss out on all this fun? are you crazy!

  • ForeverIU

I am your student Ole Man. Not being “tongue-in-cheek”!

  • Carolina Hoosier

I like the old hippie folk songs. Wow, we agree on something!

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

you’re the one who gave this long winded sermon about how people growing up in less than favorable situations should essentially be excused for their wrongdoings. you’re the one who interpreted what i said as being racial. you’re the one hung up on race, not me, pal

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

    feeling nauseous again…

  • IMSKRONG

No. It’s a citation for possession of alcohol as a minor.

  • IMSKRONG

    What’s so bad about Legoland?

  • This kind of fun I already have. 🙂

  • Come on guys

What discipline is he preaching and what isn’t being provided? How was the program proud after sampson? after davis? explain to me who was proud of that program? Who is considering IU a laughing stock? and the “revolving door of players” 1.) at least crean graduates his players 2.) guys come and go, you’re right, but it doesn’t help when you put multiple players in the NBA. And who cares if players come and go? seriously? Player turnover (in itself) is not necessarily a bad thing.

  • Bill Graham

Then you have no need to comment, but apparently 7 people agree that supporting the team is important and should be iterated.

  • Ole Man

Last time I checked, billy, it’s still a free America with 1st amendment rights.
    7 people agreed–whoop-ti-do.
Don’t tell me or anyone else how to be a Hoosier fan; nor what a true Hoosier fan is. You have no clue “Iittle boy”.
I was a Hoosier fan probably before you were a twinkle in your Daddy’s eye.
You want to be a cheerleader; nothing wrong with that and go for it.
Just don’t put down others who don’t want to “rah rah or wear a skirt” with you.

  • ForeverIU

You liar I never said they come from “less than favorable situations” or even anything close to it. I said they come to IU and their default cultural surroundings, the social spaces in which they feel comfortable and accepted, are ones in which alcohol is consumed regularly. But your racist brain could only interpret that as coming from “less than favorable situations” because you already decided you are going to hold the culture of drinking in judgement.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

culture of drinking? hold it in judgement? dude, you’re so far in left field it’s scary! call me what you want, i don’t care. rational people will see how baseless and flat out ridiculous your claims are.

i’m not holding anything in judgement. i don’t think he’s a bad kid. i myself probably drank too much in college(albeit never in a convenient store parking lot right by campus at 1am. that’s just dumb). i’m saying the penalty matched the crime. i’m saying a person’s ‘cultural surroundings’ shouldn’t have an impact on said punishment. i’m all about equality. you’re obviously not.

you know nothing about him (other than he’s a minority and a talented basketball player), yet you apparently have no doubt he came from a ‘culture of drinking’. you automatically assume ‘alcohol is consumed regularly’ in his childhood environment. anybody can read between those lines and decipher your meaning. maybe look in the mirror before you cast judgement on others with regard to racial prejudice.

  • Bill Graham

I have no idea on what basis you are assuming my age. Nor do I understand what role you are implying that age plays on patriotism. Additionally, if you would simply do some research you will find that my comments are more from a realism angle than supreme optimism. Never once, have I targeted your posts for my own entertainment. It is you sir who are the child by repeatedly targeting mine.

  • Ole Man

Hope you had boots on when you were typing that.

I’m not the one telling others how to be a Hoosier:

“put your dang Hoosier shirts back on or float away with the weather cuz thats all you are if you cant find the gumption to support the team even through all the its thats been going on.”

    Talk about childish.

  • Bruce Lynn

The worst part about this is

  • Bruce Lynn

The worst part is that he was quite possibly going to be the most improved player on the roster this year. It’s a shame he didn’t learn his lesson last year. I agree it was the right call to dismiss him but that doesn’t change the fact that it just plain sucks. I do believe we have guys that can step up to help fill the void but we will never know how good we could have been cause EH would have been huge for us this year.

  • Hoosier Fanatic

I still believe they can play the style of ball that they were planning on. Max and Juwan will have to be a big big part of what EH was going to bring and possibly Colin playing the 4 some, which I think we would all rather see him at the 3. Let’s just hope we have some leadership step up majorly within the team cause if we are going to see anything similar to what we had in 2013 that is going to have to happen.

  • Bill Graham

Well excuse me for dismissing fair weather fans.
