Video: Thon Maker summer highlights

It was a dominant summer for class of 2016 Indiana recruiting target Thon Maker. He was named the MVP of the NBPA Top 100 Camp and also stood out at the Under Armour All-American Camp and the UA Association Finals.

Courtside Films combined some of Maker’s top moments from the summer into a highlight collection, which is available below:

Here is the most amazing thing of all:

DraftExpress recently had a (ludicrously) early 2017 draft projection, and Maker was #24, 6 spots behind Thomas Bryant. Even allowing for the meaninglessness of such a distant projection, that is kind of stunning. Are there really 23 players in that year alone that can be rationally projected as better than this? I am by no means a talent evaluator, especially regarding the NBA, but sheesh. This kid looks like something from another world.

Not a whole lot of us who can do all that

You have to remember that this is a highlight tape and doesn’t show a complete picture. I’m sure there are plenty of times that he tries to drive and turns the ball over, we have no idea what his shooting percentage is, how often he gets pushed around in the paint because he is so thin. These tapes only show them when they succeed.

Obviously the less dribbling the better lol. The biggest thing for him is to keep adding weight. Other than that just keep working on shooting and post moves. Over and over. He’s still a bit shaky with his game but his potential is enormous.

He gets so high on those blocks that he could probably grab the ball instead of hitting it out of bounds. He would be a huge get for IU.

    Not getting my hopes up..

There are very few players who could assemble a highlight reel like this no matter how expertly edited. Even allowing for all the bloopers we don’t see, he does things even other elite athletes can’t do. And he does them as a 7 footer. Particularly in light of the NBA’s evolution towards mobile bigs with perimeter skills, I would think he projects near the top of any board. Clearly I’m wrong, but I marvel nonetheless.

It irks me how much influence ESPN has over the hype and ranking of a HS player. A couple years ago when Thon played in the United States he was dubbed as unquestionably the best prospect in ALL OF HS BASKETBALL regardless of class. He moves to Canada and ESPN doesn’t include him in the rankings at all so everyone forgets about him. He dominates this entire summer and now everyone is like “Oh yeah, Thon is the best…” He is the absolute best prospect in the 2016 class and I don’t care what ESPN says about Giles, Taytum, Jackson or whoever. Yes he is still raw and needs polish and some weight gain wouldn’t hurt but his skill set is 1 in a billion. Having said all that, I don’t think we have a very good chance at landing him. Hope I’m wrong on that one.

  • Hoosier Hall

Yeah it wasn’t that long ago they had him at #1… That crap is all a bunch of hogwash unless it is right before the draft when they’ve actually played a full season at the college level and completed workouts with pro teams.

What a rare talent, reminds me more of KG than KD. He’s so unique I’m not sure what I’d focus on to develop or utilize. Sure, add weight & strength, ball handling, and shooting…then what? If he stays healthy and continues to develop, man, the world is his for the taking.

Sports 247 has him as a virtual lock for Arizona State, I’m not saying I disagree, I just don’t understand. What would be the appeal?

  • SCHoosier

Exactly why those type ratings and this point in time are pure horse manure. If there was ever a kid ready to compete in the NBA right out of high school..Maker is one of them. Second coming of Kevin G. Kid goes one year of college he might hurt someone.

Is Thon serious about going to college for a year at all?

  • Ole Man

Kyl, not to start a fuss; however, the guy has been called a PG in a PF body. He is that exceptional with his dribbling, passing, outside shooting, driving, etal. He is the total package. His only need at this point is weight.

  • CandyStripes

Seems to me like Thon is a glue guy who might get minutes off the bench as a senior. hahahhahaha jk. this guy is a rare talent and has to be at the top of the 2016 recruiting board. Hope Crean is doing everything possible to land this kid.

  • marcusgresham

    I’m with you.
I know the Garnett comparisons are there but I’ll throw out another one–Arvydas Sabonis. Americans only saw him when he was older and mostly immobile but the the passing was still there. I don’t think I’ve seen a big guy pass like this since he retired.

  • marcusgresham

He could work a bit on the left hand but I want to know who the hell is out there that is supposed to be better than this kid.

  • Gregory Spera

Seems like we have been getting the Thon Maker tease forever, now. Crean has been on this kid the hardest of anyone for the past couple of years, and offered him (and his brother, Matur) back in the spring of 2014. Hard to stay level headed about such a game changing talent.

  • marcusgresham

I think his nickname would be “Superglue”

  • marcusgresham

I hope he can be paired with another big guy because I’d hate to see him simply stuck down low. Purdue will still have two of their three big guys (I don’t see Swanigan being one-and-done) and either he or Haas would have to come out on the floor to guard Thon. Hopefully Bryant would be excited about sticking around to play another season if this guy was part of the deal.

  • Gregory Spera

    2016-17 dream front line:
    C – Thomas Bryant
    PF – De’Ron Davis
    SF – Thon Maker

  • INUnivHoosier

He almost killed that old guy at the beginning.

  • And One

Not the usual nothing-but-dunks big man highlight reel, is it?
Thon is the Alpha and the Omega. I want very badly for him to spend a year in Bloomington. If he goes elsewhere, I will be…crestfallen. If he goes to Ky, I will join the French Foreign Legion.

  • Kyl470

I’m not trying to say he isn’t a legit player, I’m just trying to provide a reason why some draft experts only had him as the 24th best prospect. Again he is being compared to current college players as well as other high school seniors. He would definitely be a huge get if IU lands him.

  • ScoopGeoff

This guy is going to be must-watch TV for his year of college… Nationally… He legitimately has the ability to make IU cool all by himself.

  • marcusgresham

    TJ Leaf?

  • marcusgresham

I saw that! Damn whippersnappers knockin’ balls at me! And get off my lawn!

  • Ya TJ Leaf in the PF spot without a question. THAT would be the dream front line!

  • eville87

HOPE……… that’s about all we have I would guess of getting this kid now. If he went in 2015 i think we could’ve had him. Would be good to see him in 16 with davis and what we will have.
