Report: Oladipo invited to USA Basketball camp in Vegas

For the second consecutive summer, Victor Oladipo will be participating in an event with USA Basketball.

Last summer, the Orlando Magic and former Indiana guard was a member of the USA Basketball select team that trained with the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s National Team in Las Vegas. Cody Zeller was also a part of that team.

This summer, Oladipo has again been invited to Vegas to participate in a minicamp that will run from Aug. 11-13, according to’s Marc Stein.

Chicago’s Jimmy Butler, Golden State’s Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes, Utah’s Trey Burke, Orlando’s Tobias Harris and Memphis’ Mike Conley have also been invited per the ESPN report.

These invites are in addition to the pool of 34 players in the mix for next summer’s Olympic team.

The three-day minicamp will feature practices on August 11 and 12 at the Mendenhall Center at UNLV and also the 2015 USA Basketball Showcase, an exhibition on August 13 at 10:30 p.m. ET between participating USA National Team members at the Thomas and Mack Center.

According to Stein’s report, the practices will be non-contact, but USA Basketball president Jerry Colangelo is making attendance mandatory for players who wish to stay eligible for selection for the national team that will compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

In his second NBA season with Orlando, Oladipo averaged 17.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 35.7 minutes per game.

Hopefully for Vic the emergence of Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton and also having Harris and Vucevic back will take a bit off his offensive load so that he can go back to being a big time two way guard. His defense slipped last year because of the energy spent on offense.

I really want to see Oladipo on a good team. I think his defense, selflessness, and other intangibles would shine through. I could see him taking on a Andre Igudoula-type role for a championship team one day.

Just give the Magic some time. They’re gaining a good core with Vic, Payton, Vucevic, Harris, Gordon Harkless, Fournier and Hezonja.

Harkless was traded but I agree.

Wrong! Points and offense get the headlines and the notice in the NBA! Victor needs to increase the scoring to 20+ points, 5+rebounds, 5+assists, 2 steals, in 38 minutes. Sure he must up his defense to “shut-down” mode as well, but that can’t be his first priority. Look at the other names added to the national team pool: each had “break-out” offensive seasons in 2014-15!

    See above comment.

The Magic need to add an All-Star scorer. But would one want the job? Aldridge would do.
