I’m not gonna call him John Thompson Jr by any means, but I don’t think he is as flawed as some claim. I usually find the truth to be somewhere in the middle. I’d argue Vonleh was only here one year so didn’t have much time to develop. Hornets drafted him because he was the most talented available and they expected to be good and not need his help this year. He was actually only in the d league for 1 game and then Jefferson went down. Vonleh got 10 minutes tonight. Cody was on a hot streak, and Williams and Byombo are more than serviceable bigs who are uniquely skilled at things the Hornets needed more than Vonleh at the time. Vonleh did great in his 1 game in the d league.

  • RU4IU2

Thanks for the update–I really do not follow the league. It reminds me of Pro Wrestling back in the day…mostly for the entertainment of the fans and too much 1 on 1.

  • RU4IU2

Chuck Taylor Converse Black Hi Tops like the Celtics…

  • RU4IU2

Maybe the “talent’ to which he was referring was the coach and not the players.

  • SilentBob

Well Rick Petino is the 3rd best coach in college hoops IMO right behind Donovan and Coach K. But if you want to compare, Crean started with literally nothing, and in 4 years upset the best team in college basketball, and in 5 years had the best team in college basketball himself. Sure they fell short and their isn’t any glory in being the team that should have won, but that shouldn’t minimize how good they were, and I don’t think that’s even close to the best we’ll see from Tom. Then he gets screwed by basically losing everything again, and striking out on Ferrel’s class (his fault), but again if we had Vonleh back, there is no way we’re not challenging Wisconsin this year and IF we do add a stellar big man this year we will be the front runners to win the BIG next year. Bottom line is I don’t see a time where Tom fails to lead us to the tourney again. And once you’re in March literally anything can happen.

  • Jrod

Why don’t we see what happens next year next year and stop making silly predictions based off speculation. I know what we were big ten Champs and ranked #1 for the better part of that season. I also know we got beat by Syracuse the following year and saw that 2-3 zone but in the tourney game we looked very lost.

  • N71

Personally, I need to get ahead of myself, otherwise I’d have to sit and stew on the Michigan State game.

  • Jrod

I hear you that is a game I would like to forget.

  • CreamandCrimson

I know that IU was awful on Monday night and that we wouldn’t have beaten hardly anyone on our schedule playing like that. That being said, perhaps Michigan State is a really good team and perhaps they had something to do with how bad we looked. The Spartans were great against us and they were tremendous last night in the 2nd half.

I’m not sure where they fit in the pecking order but I’d venture to say that if they played Maryland again this weekend, the result would be quite different than it was about 10 days ago when the Terps won in East Lansing.

  • IULore

Zeislof is a senior. DD and EH and CH will be great rotation guys. TP walk-on or transfer, someone will. I think JM and EH will battle to start at the 4

  • ForeverIU

I hope so. If you are playing a decent all-around game, you are not going to lose with 12 of 17 3-pointers (and 2 of 12 for Iowa). If MSU has evolved into a lethal perimeter defender, then imagine how much better they will be when we play them in AH. Their helpside D is incredible. All I remember from that nightmarish game is their players moving like a cloud of bees as our ball was being passed around the perimeter. Maybe our crowd will drown out their lines of communication, ha. We need to demoralize and blown them out just like they did to us. But we will not be able to unless we have improved significantly on D.

  • ForeverIU

I hope they haven’t become the example to other teams on how to take away our perimeter.

  • IULore

    Yes, yes it did.

  • IULore

No one could rebound like barkley. Rebounding is good defense.

  • ForeverIU

Ha, I hope. But like Florida Billy once said:

“I have never been a big believer in payback. I don’t know what that means. What do you get back? This is the next game that is in front of us. Maybe if they said ‘Listen if you win the game they’re going to give you the (previous) game’, maybe we’ll have payback. I don?t see the point of payback.”

Okay, but I see what youi’re saying. I want REVENGE!

  • calbert40

Exactly. I was able to block out guys 6″-8″ taller than me in practice, because I HAD to be fundamental at boxing out, because I was 5’9″. Taller guys tend to be lazy about it in HS.

  • AssemblyBall

I am certain that Zeisloft has another year of eligibility as he enrolled as a red-shirt junior. He will be back. Nobody on the current roster is going pro. Plus, we are still actively trying to sign another player. If that happens, three guys will get to participate in the annual ritual of “getting Creaned”. I think Vegas may have a current odds board on this.

Seriously, who do we think will be the odd men out? I definitely see #22 as a candidate.

  • FinEndNow

    Or maybe both… lol

  • FinEndNow

I don’t want speculate on who could transfer… but there are obviously a couple I could see doing so… Two are going to have to move.. it may become 3 if we add another. Last I looked Troy Williams had jumped from somewhere in the 70’s to 44th in Chad Fords Top 100 NBA Prospects. James Blackmon was 52nd I think. If Williams find anything near a jumpshot before the end of the season then he’s a 1st rounder.

  • Sarasota Hoosier

Kent Benson blocked out on rebounds, even in high school! 🙂

  • Hoosier Hall

So you think Robert Johnson will go from starter to bench player??? I doubt that very much. Juwan will be battling with Hanner and Emmitt for minutes.

  • IULore

We live in the age on transfers. But I don’t feel bad. Playing at IU is a privilege.

  • IULore

I think so, mainly because I see him spelling yogi and jbj. Troy will start over him at the 3

  • RU4IU2

That sounds exactly like something TC would say in a presser. LOL!

  • RU4IU2

    Good point!

  • Hoosier89

Are you a Nike rep or something? I much prefer Adidas

  • RU4IU2

If Williams finds a shot in the 12-18 ft range this year, the day after that occurs the sun will begin rising in the West and setting in the East. I don’t see him being able to stop thinking “Drive the baseline”…usually w/o a ball fake.

  • INUnivHoosier

New jerseys couldn’t do anything about that, so I doubt it.

  • IUMIKE1

    A…FREAKIN’…MEN marcus, Amen !!!!

  • IUMIKE1

Come on Alex, can’t throw that out there and then not say why. Not necessarily partial to either one, but more curious as to why IU won’t sign with Nike.

  • IUBizmark

    I christen thee…J Mo!

  • MDHoosier

    Under Armour!

  • Hoosier1158

Recruiting at IU should be an advantage over Marquette. I think Tom has done a good job at IU, but till we can consistently keep good big guys, I don’t think it will improve. I’m not talking about hulking centers, think Jeff Newton, Jared Jeffries, jar rad Odle.

  • SilentBob

And it has been an advantage over Marquette ever since Crean restored it. Sure Marquette has a better class this year, but they got the benefit of the state of Wisconsin producing the best class of recruits it ever has. The one out of state recruit they got might be because of the reputation Crean built of Marquette turning out great wings. I think it will get better. Look at scout, 247, and rivals. We’ve got the interest of lots of big name bigs for 2015 and 2016. And who’s to say April isn’t our guy? I mean you bring up Newton he didn’t really come on until his junior year. At least April isn’t the raw specimen Crean is known to recruit at big man. He seems to have pretty solid fundamentals already in place. It’s his strength and conditioning (plus injury) that’s holding him back. And strength and conditioning is something Crean values and develops well as a result.

  • Hoosier1158

I brought up Newton as he has the size and quickness I think would be good inside player we need. I didn’t say he was superstar as soon as he walked on campus. I think April has the ability to be a good inside player. My point is we should have inside guys to replace Cody and Noah. The basketball experts predicted they would leave early, coach should have planned for that.

  • SilentBob

Oh knock it off with the whole its IU thing. Kids don’t give a damn about tradition and even if they did it was a tarnished image. He did have a back up plan. It was called Luke Fischer. And a back up plan for that called Hanner and Peter. Now he is on his back ups back ups back up. Btw Vonleh himself, as well as analysts, thought he’d be a two year player

  • Hoosier1158

There is nothing wrong with being caught up in the IU thing. When IU signed NV there was a lot of talk about him being a one year player. All your references above is exactly what I have been commenting on.

  • Hoosier1158

Why did CTC say he was coming to IU?

  • SilentBob

The real reason or what he said? Cause I have a feeling it was for the Benjamin’s and to make a name for himself.
