Video: Tom Crean addresses media on recent issues

  • 11/05/2014 2:54 pm in

Tom Crean met with the media on Wednesday afternoon at Assembly Hall to address a tumultuous week for the program and discussed a variety of topics.

Among them: An update on the condition of Devin Davis, the current leadership from the players in the program, the amount of responsibility he feels for what has transpired recently and much more.

Watch the full press conference below:

Don’t know how anyone can listen to this and not be moved to give Crean our full support. I can only speak for myself, and I am one of his biggest doubters, but, at least for now, he has said what I needed to hear. I hope everyone associated with the program actually takes these words to heart. God willing, tomorrow I can just go back to bitching about his game management. Go Hoosiers.

This was, in my opinion, one of the better press conferences he’s had. I’m not suggesting that this fixes anything but, I was glad to hear his comments and I think he said the right things…now, it’s time for actions.

For those who didn’t see it, I suggest you look up the transcript and read through it or watch it here because I found it fairly informative. He was disappointed and angry and I don’t think it can be said that he is ignoring this. He talked about
being too forgiving of individuals in the past and admitted that he had
made mistakes in some instances. He talked about being “sterner” with
things in the future. He talked about things he would have changed on
Friday night. He talked vaguely about a different approach he will have
to events like Halloween and the Little 500.

Again, I’m not suggesting that saying these things solves anything but I thought he had a strong press conference, recognized accountability, talked about
changes that need to be made and talked about growth. I’m ready for the
season to begin and for the coaches and players to begin walking the
walk and changing perceptions, both on and off the court.

    Agree…..Go Hoosiers!

  • Zach

We have to get behind this guy. Whether you like him or not, he is our coach and he is going to be here for a while. He has turned our program around from a lot worse than this, have a little faith, support Coach Crean, and support Indiana Basketball.

  • Gregory Spera

One of the biggest things I took away from this press conference wasn’t even something that he had to say. It was an attitude. I sense that he has been humbled by circumstance.

  • SCHoosier

Guess we all know now why TC picked Nick Z to go with Yogi to the B-10 media day. Didn’t really have any other “upper classmen” who “qualified”. Lot of people questioned Crean’s decision on that…need any more explanation? I agree that TC needs..&…should have our support. When a coach gets the team together like Glass said TC did before Halloween..and told them to take care of themselves and their team mates…then they still go out and play stupid…what’s a Coach suppose to do?. Babysitters might be the next step??? Go Hoosiers.

  • Matt

CTC just went a long way to calming down Hoosier Nation. If you can still find fault with him then it might be a “you” problem and not a “him” problem. Go Hoosiers

  • ForeverIU

Considering that you’re a tough guy and this is about as sweet as you’ll sound, I’ll take it, LOL! Cheers buddy.

  • Hardwood83

I was hoping that Devin may only miss a few weeks….that doesn’t sound likely.

  • ATG08

This comment is well stated. And I agree. The last several days have really soured me on the state of the Program compounded by last season. But I think this conference is more of the attitude we have been looking for from Crean in the past. If he’s learning it now, better late than never. I sure hope the players get it now, too. Other issues I may have with Crean or the players can wait until the end of the season. It’s time to get ready for THIS season and cheer this team as a cohesive unit and fan base. We all want to see success on the court, and it starts with habits off of it. Go Hoosiers.

  • Gregory Spera

At this point I’m afraid that Devin’s recovery is more of a “quality of life” issue. Not counting on him, this season.

  • SCHoosier

LOL with you..(and I’m a softie at heart).

  • Crimson&CremeFraiche

I like that he said that if players want to come to Indiana for Little 5 or Halloween or some other get together, then they are not coming to Indiana. That is paraphrased obviously. I, personally, love those events though but I like how serious he was when he said that and even told a reporter that its not funny.

  • Crimson&CremeFraiche

Man. That is a scary thought. Hope he has a full recovery whether he ever plays again or not. Can’t mess around in the street. Cars win every time.

  • Brian Goodman

Just looking for clarification here… is it true that both Stan and Troy failed multiple drug tests? I’ve seen that reported/hinted at and also that they only failed one which was over the summer.

  • HoosierHuckleberry

I believe that TC had an “Ah Ha” moment during the past few days with respect to how to best help these young men move forward on their collective journey toward adulthood. For what it’s worth, I respect him for admitting that he has made a few errors in the past and really respect him for not continuing to beat himself up for things he “should have, could have, might have done”. Talked as if he’s going to be kept busy tweaking the methods to be used to reach the goals he has set for the players, himself and our program. I wish him success in this process.
    Way to man up, Coach!

  • jacobdetroy

Couldn’t agree more. I even noticed a pretty direct change in his posture and tone as he answered questions and addressed the “beat” people.

  • SilentBob

Alright things seem to have simmered down a bit. People got their questions answered. Now I only have 3 questions to ask. Can I get a better preview of tomorrow nights game? Is there a team that Crean hasn’t said is well coached in his interviews? but most importantly…… WHO”S READY FOR SOME BASKETBALL??? yea I’m hype

  • Respect to Coach Crean. This has been a tough week, but I’m ready for some basketball. Really hate to hear about Devin’s struggles. This has got to sober these players up a bit.

  • ForeverIU

Even if he recovers physically my guess is he will have focus and concentration issues for a while. Insofar as the game is a mental game I doubt he’ll be able to handle it at B1G levels. This is pure, pure speculation on my part, but I don’t see him returning at anything near full capacity this semester. I sincerely hope I am wrong, for his sake more than anything.

  • Did you also read Tracy Smith’s comments which are on the ‘Forum’. If you haven’t you should. Might take your thinking to another level on this… Tracy is right on about it.

  • ForeverIU

I won’t get to watch the game, not subscribed to BTN Plus. Blah! Streaming anywhere?

  • No it really does not sound likely. When it requires help to even sit up and eat.. Even at a young age, your muscles deteriorate pretty fast when not being used. I also was thinking maybe he could play again this year,,, Now, I’d say that does not look like a real good possibility. I hope and pray he can though… Really have to feel sorry for the guy.

  • Snookafly

He has always said the right thing– that’s part of his job. I will always root for the program’s success and by extension whatever coach is in charge, but I’m not really moved by his words at this point.

  • The Balcony Seats

Alright, Tommy. Now…let’s walk the walk.

  • HannerTime Hoosier

He finally spoke in a candid, forthright, normal manner. No anecdotes, paraphrases, etc . . . thanks forno bs CTC! GO HOOSIERS!

  • ForeverIU

Coach is a strange one I have to say, something impenetrable about him, a quality that comes in handy at game time, sometimes, lol!

  • IUfanforever

It is hard not to like CTC…I know he cares about the players and the program. Only time will tell…’s time to move on and hope that DD makes a full recovery and this team gets it together.

  • CreamandCrimson

I’m not a Premium Forum member so, no, I didn’t see those comments.

  • INUnivHoosier

Did I see correct? Replay on Saturday?

Was thinking the exact same thing, didn”t see any of the snarky, I’m irritated by your question, type of stuff, that he seems to have had at times in the past when taking questions from the press. Probably understood that was one of the last things that he wanted to do. lol

My BTN preview bar says it will be replayed Saturday 4:30 to 6:00 pm

  • INUnivHoosier

    Thanks, Mike.
