Victor Oladipo out indefinitely after suffering facial injury

Orlando Magic guard and former Indiana star Victor Oladipo is out indefinitely after suffering a facial fracture in practice on Thursday, OrlandoMagic.com writer John Denton reported on Friday.

Oladipo has missed the entire NBA preseason after suffering a sprained MCL in his right knee and was hoping to play in tonight’s preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks before suffering the injury.

The injury is being described as a cut and bone break on right side of his face below the eye. He now faces facial surgery on Saturday, with no return timetable set.

Last season, Oladipo finished second in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting after averaging 13.8 points, 4.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game for the Magic.

The former Indiana guard was selected No. 2 overall in the 2013 NBA draft after an explosive junior season in which he was named a first team All-American and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year after he set the IU single-season steals record with 78.

    Get well soon Vic.

Hopefully not an injury arising out of an altercation with another player.

  • indianaourindiana

You’re a pretty positive person huh?

  • myrddin

Am I cynical about “official statements” in the same way I am about any big corporate PR, sure. I’d say you’d be naive not to be. But there are stories of ultra-competitive types (beyond just competitive enough to get into the NBA) that sometimes bump heads with teammates, see, e.g. Michael Jordon. Just idle speculation.

  • indianaourindiana

Has there ever been a suggestion anywhere that Vic has ever had an issue or altercation with a teammate?

  • myrddin

Christ are you his mother or something? Does this seem like a great use of time to pick a fight with someone over whether some corporate PR flak’s morning BS-speak was accurate? Did Jordan ever punch anyone out in college? Not that we’re aware of. How many stories about what really happened inside an NBA practice come out years later? Maybe it was just an errant elbow, who knows? The NBA is full of elbows, you just don’t see them that often *break someone’s face to the point where they need surgery*. Hell there’s not even that many broken noses, all things considered. So I was just wondering out loud on a message board. THAT’S WHAT IDLE SPECULATION IS.

Chill bro. I actually agree with you on being skeptical about what really happens in situations like this. The most important thing at this point is Vic’s recovery so he doesn’t lose too much ground.

Best of luck to Vic, but let me be Mr. Obvious: Inadvertent elbow in practice? Has Orlando signed Tijan to a contract?

  • Alford Bailey

    Inadvertent elbows still hurt:)

  • TomJameson

Good luck Vic, Gods speed with the healing. Hope it was really inadvertently thrown, and probably was.

  • ForeverIU

Inadvertent blows can be pretty nasty, and the surgery could just be to insert temporary pins to facilitate and speed up the healing (just my guess).

Son of a B****!! How can you allow your BEST player to get fouled that hard in practice? No wonder the Magic are no good!

  • AnonymousDave

No because I like to think if Vic got in a fight, then the other player would have the broken facial bone lol. No but for real elbows can do more damage than punches. I’m not a big fan of MMA and stuff but I’m pretty sure that’s why 12 to 6 are illegal. I could be wrong but I took a couple “inadvertent” elbows from wrestling with my brothers growing up and yea I didn’t end up winning that match…. lol. And I’m no medical expert but it seems to me the angle it would take to do that, and the amount of bone to bone contact and power to do that it seems it would be much more likely an elbow.

You probably are right about it involving his aggressive nature though. Probably a scrimmage an Oladipo probably got to aggressive with trying to strip a rebound or something and dude probably swung his bow like Vonleh and clipped him.

  • AnonymousDave

Hope he recovers quickly. I was really looking forward to watching Oladdipo take another leap in his career. Oh well maybe he can continue to work on that jump shot and ball handling while he is out.

  • IUMIKE1

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Vic.

After Vic having to just sit and watch the action for that long and nothing for him to do but that and be in the weight room, practice shooting, etc etc I wouldn’t wanna be the first player he goes up against once he’s fully healed and back 100 %. lol

It was at the beginning of his first scrimmage back with the team. Dewayne Deadman, the back up center accidentally did it while coming down from a play at the basket. There is absolutely no tension on this team what so ever. When he was injured a hush came over the entire room according to Maurice Harkless who is a good friend of his.

He was looking so pitiful while sitting on the bench recovering from his knee injury. All of us Magic Fans are anxiously waiting for him to heal and be back in action. Get well soon Vic, we miss you!
