Robert Johnson signs Letter of Intent with Indiana

  • 11/14/2013 3:24 pm in

Benedictine College Preparatory (Va.) guard Robert Johnson became the second official member of Indiana’s 2014 recruiting class when the 6-foot-3 guard signed his National Letter of Intent this afternoon.

Johnson delayed signing until today so that he could sign at G.H. Reid elementary school in Richmond.

The No. 48 player nationally according to the 247Composite, Johnson becomes the second player to sign with the Hoosiers today, joining Marion guard James Blackmon Jr.

The combo guard averagedĀ 20.2 points and shoot 46.2 percent on 3-pointers at the Nike Peach Jam in July.

Indiana is also expected to receive a National Letters of Intent today from Wilbraham and Monson Academy (Mass.) forward Max Hoetzel.

Welcome RJ! you are going to love Bloomington!

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

    Hooray!!!!!! welcome RJ!

  • MillaRed

OK old timers, when is the last time we saw guards like JBJ and RJ on the court at the same time?

They are not Coverdale and Fife that I am certain.

  • WhatsUpKnight

much respect for this kid. nice to have a couple more sharpshooters coming in!

  • WhatsUpKnight

hmmm…pat graham and pat knight? šŸ˜‰
    alford and insert_whoever_you_want_here?

  • shknqk

    hillman and edwards
    guyton and recker
those guys put up some pretty dang good numbers… we should be so lucky if these guys add a link in that chain of player/shooters

  • WhatsUpKnight

    oh man, forgot about guyton!

  • Kelin Blab

Really really like RJ’s game. Glad he is a hoosier!

  • shknqk

alford and smart… a couple of not too distinguished gentlemen.

the point is well established… potentially best guard play Millennials have ever enjoyed. (D, scoring, ball handling, shooting).

  • iujunebug

Welcome, officially, to the Hoosier Family!

  • Dr Dave

For good measure in the history of zone-busting teams, I’ll suggest the 1981 tandem of Randy Wittman and Isaah Thomas, with forward Ted Kitchell manning a corner if you want to add Max into the discussion as well.
(Although I’ll admit Isaah’s rep for shooting came more in the pros, as almost no one in college seemed to stay in front long enough to make him shoot from outside).

  • Andrew

Hillman? Cmon man. Maybe Lyndon Jones and Edwards in ’89. That was a great combo. I know, I know, RMK hearted Hillman. Team MVP while Jay was the B1G MVP.

  • Alford Bailey

Jay Edwards and Lyndon Jones co Mr Basketballs I believe at Marion. Edwards could take over a game and JBJ has the same ability also from Marion I think. Will he come to Bloomington as this years Mr. Basketball?

  • Alford Bailey

No they are not Coverdale and Fife for sure. That said will they lead IU to a National Title game like Tom and Dane Did? Lets hope so. Dane Fife is top 3 of my all time favorites and my pick to be the next coach of the Hoosiers when CTC chooses to moves on.

  • Oldfan

Most likely Michigan State will need him first.

  • Alford Bailey

I know talent wise Jones and Edwards but I would take a Joe Hillman on the Hoosier squad every year.

  • MillaRed

    Winner winner chicken dinner

  • MillaRed

I can’t go with Wittman but I like this

  • MillaRed

Guyton and Recker not bad. But I will never forgive Luke for bolting. Kidding. But it did hurt.

  • MillaRed

I didn’t say Capobianco and Tijan. I kid I kid.

  • MillaRed

Might have a tie here. I would endure another 4 years with guys guys any day.

  • WisconHoosier

Pat Knight . . . ugh. I once read that he prevented IU from becoming the only team in NCAA history to have every player shoot 50% or better from the field for one season (everyone did it but him). I’m not 100% sure it’s true, but I think it is.

His scholarship was pure self-indulgence by his dad. Pat was barely a MAC level kid.

  • Andrew Walker

I can only hope that RJ will bite someone in honor of Fife.

  • Gregory J. Haggard

    Very excited about this kid.
He has such an ability to create, and smooth jumper.
He reminds me of Trey Burke, not saying he’s as good, just saying he reminds me of him in his ability to get his own shot.
    Welcome.

  • Gregory J. Haggard

I don’t know whether anyone has mentioned them in this long thread, but heres my 2 cents…………….as far as just back court talent, I say Isaiah Thomas and Randy Wittman, that’s how much respect I have for these 2 young mens ability.

  • Gregory J. Haggard

Sorry Dr Dave, I picked the same 2 before I read your post.

  • jimmygoiu

No way PKnight was a D1 player. I did not mind him on the team, but he was D3 at best.

  • Kenneth234

Really, this is a lot like having two slightly taller A.J. Guyton’s in the same back court. Can’t imagine anything better than that. And to think that they will likely join Yogi and Stan to occupy all the minutes in the back court, and you know we are in for something special. Especially adding wings like Williams, Davis, Hoetzel, Etherington and Hartman; and Vonleh, Perea, and Fischer in the front court, and this is a team that has very special potential.

  • G-Rob

This recruiting class is loaded with shooters. The Hurrin Hoosiers dropping 3 bombs in B-town. Can not wait to see these guys with the talent we have now. I can hear Assembly Hall now……TTThhrrreeee!!!

  • SilverAtlanta

Jay and Lyndon were both great players! IU has had a number of very good if not great guard tandems.

  • Hoosier heritage

Congrats Hoosier nation and welcome Mr. Johnson!

  • Hoosier faithful 13

I’m glad you’re happy to be part of Hoosier nation !!!! We need heart like that on the team !!!! Welcome to the family and Hoosier nation !!!!!

  • 323 S. Grant

Robert Johnson is a smooth basketball player!

  • HoosierTrav

I wouldn’t want Fife as our head man. Did a bad job at IPFW. If Crean decides to move on (really hope not), then I’d hope we’d throw our entire checkbook and the keys to Bloomington to Brad Stevens. Brad Stevens at a program like IU would be Coach K 2.0

  • IUMIKE1

    Up vote checked !

  • shknqk

I don’t know if Jones ever had stats or leadership like hillmanā€¦ edwards and hillman 20ppg and 13ppg and hillman almost 60% from 3pt range.

Give up the credit where it is due!!!
