The Indiana Hoosiers will begin the 2013-2014 season ranked in the USA Today coaches poll.

The preseason poll, released late this morning, has Indiana slotted at No. 24. Four other Big Ten teams are ranked: Michigan State (2), Michigan (9), Ohio State (10) and Wisconsin (21).

Iowa and Illinois both received votes in the poll.

Indiana was the preseason No. 1 in last year’s poll and finished the season ranked No. 7.

Two of Indiana’s non-conference opponents are also ranked: Syracuse, which defeated the Hoosiers in last year’s Sweet 16, is No. 7 and Notre Dame, which Indiana will play in December at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, is No. 22.

Another potential opponent in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden, Connecticut, is No. 19.

The complete poll is available here.

I don’t see it this year. Of course, I didn’t see it last year, but looking in hindsight, their frontcourt was really solid. No one really saw Jackson being as good as he was either.

This year, they will be really deep at guard with Jackson, Gasser and Brust. Throw in Dekker on the wing, and that is a great backcourt. But I don’t see how they will rebound at all.

Maybe I’m being foolish, but one of these years, I will be right!!

  • I’ve watched those AAU tournaments.. Defense is almost non-existent and the first guy down the floor usually shoots. Ok, they’re good stat sheet packers.. and a venue to show off individual talent.. that’s about it. You can’t tell me the competition in those games is as intense as B1G play or most of the other major conferences for that matter. They’re just not. So you really don’t know how those guys will react to competition at the next level. puKY last year had a major problem with those guys playing hard. So much so that Slimapari sometime around the mid-season made his guys wear heart rate monitors, so he could gauge just how hard they were really willing to put out… SO just ratings dies not get it. There’s a whole lot more that goes into being successful at the next level..

  • Yes, but Louisville will be very good this year.. I really doubt Kensucky will handle them… or MSU. I believe you can chalk those two up in the ‘L’ column pretty much no doubt.

Well maybe yes, maybe no. The rankings aren’t computer generated. They’re made by people who’ve watched both programs and seen the same thing everyone else has.

I agree that the Badgers will never do anything big in the NCAA tourney, and they are also extremely boring to watch. I am also a Crean supporter, but he has never owned Bo Ryan by any stretch of the imagination. Not at Marquette and obviously not for us.

CTC has his work cut out for him this year,#24.. i just don’t know if this team is there right now, with just Will and Yogi back having played heavy minutes last year. Hanner and Jeremy are the X factors in my mind and if they play well and contribute we could be top 4 in the BIG this season. any updates on our injured freshmen??

To me, this seems about right. This truly is one of those seasons that could go either way. That being said, there is a lot of talent on this Indiana roster.
