IUNDSITH0012The Big Ten Conference released the annual All-Big Ten teams this evening live on the Big Ten Network and several Indiana players were among the honorees.

Michigan’s Trey Burke was named the conference’s player of the year, edging Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller. But Oladipo was named the defensive player of the year and was also on the all-Big Ten first team, along with Zeller, Burke, Michigan’s Tim Hardaway Jr. and Ohio State’s Deshaun Thomas. On the media’s first team, Ohio State’s Aaron Craft replaced Hardaway Jr.

Oladipo and Burke were unanimous picks for the all-conference first team. Oladipo and Craft were unanimous selections on the all-defensive team.

Indiana’s Will Sheehey was named the sixth man of the year, Christian Watford was on the all-Big Ten third team, and Yogi Ferrell was on the all-conference freshman team and also an all-Big Ten honorable selection by the media. Jordan Hulls was named all-Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches.

Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan was named the league’s coach of the year by both the coaches and media.

Derek Elston was IU’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Because he has almost no talent and almost won a big ten title. That’s how

  • That Harris kid would’ve looked great in crimson being able to come in & contribute from day 1. #OldNews

They get calls that’s for sure. The Kohl Center is bad but he gets them on the road. They helped vs. Penn St big time. He’s a media darling for some reason. But will never get a banner. Good for you Bo.

    TRAH:
I think there is significant validity to your argument. i too have been around long enough to remember the attitudes you mention in your post.

I think another aspect that exacerbates the issue is again having a coach who is a believer in “calling it like he sees it.” CTC is a bit more diplomatic about it than RMK but the message is the same: “Hard work, honesty, teamwork and academics are the most important issue for coaches and players to focus on during their tenures and beyond.”

I have also noticed how national media types characterized at least two of IU’s losses this year as the Hoosiers making mistakes while calling IU’s close wins luck

The weather is just brutal. Not happy!

What is so brilliant about leading 3 4th year seniors and a junior to 4th place in the B1G? Berggren was a huge underachiever. His star forward needed a jump shot to make free throws! Evans could not be taught to shoot free throws without leaving his feet. Embarrassing for the coach and the player. Ridiculous!

Big 10 Player of the Year? That would be Burke.
Big 10 Team of the Year? That would be Indiana.
    Nuff said.

  • Understand why the coaches hate CTC. He comes in like a white knight and in just a few short years turns a disaster program into an elite one. In the meantime, Bo Ryan (nothing against him) is right where was when Crean came it. Makes them all look silly and ineffective.

  • InTheMtns

But part of a coach’s job is to recruit and develop talent. If he has almost no talent then that should be a mark against a coach, not seen as an accomplishment. Besides, he does have talent. And his team is loaded with seniors and juniors. And regardless of what he *almost* did, he finished fourth. Again. I understand what you said is the explanation being given, but I just don’t buy it.

And maybe just maybe keep VO & CZ one more year just to piss everybody off in this brutal conference!

I know the only other coach I respect as much as TC is Izzo. And I would
Bet he sure as hell thinks TC should have won it! Great relationship there!

haha “old man” up to his normal crotchety antics. I love it. So you think Knight is more important than he actually is and you’ll stick up for him to the bitter end, we all get it. That doesn’t make you right and them wrong or vice versa, but you are taking this WAY too personally.

I’ve learned everything about Knight from a man who followed him from before he showed up in Bloomington and guess what, he has some good and some bad qualities, just like everyone else. It seems you’re just mad that the media only points out the negative these days, so how about you stop trying to lecture good, young IU fans that you share a passion with and instead direct your anger toward the real target of our angst, the media.

    WORDDDD ! ! ! !

  • IUMIKE1

That and he’s used to polishing players into high level players better than just about any one else….wait a minute doesn’t that pretty much make him the coach of the year right there. Damn, just when I thought I had got myself out of that train of thought I pulled myself back in.

  • IUMIKE1

With you on that first one, and in a very big way. That was the first thing that made me do the second reading to make sure that the ” all caps ” thing was what meant unanimous, as I was sure I must of seen it wrong, that there was a typo or something, anything ! ! Saying that that was a snub is being nice and saying the coach that didn’t vote for him is an idiot is being even nicer. I put coach as non-plural cause there couldn’t possibly be more than one B1G coach that freakin’ stupid / spiteful. What I think it was is not allowed to be typed on here but then again what I feel like that is isn’t probably allowed on any site.

  • WisconHoosier

I know. There was a fawning article in the local paper this morning, by a sportswriter with a vote, explaining how the award to Mr. Perfect Ryan was a well-deserved career award, not a season one. Sick, and not in a good way.

  • All man what a season. I really really pray and hope IU wins the NC in Atlanta. Just think about how the cards have been stacked against IU since being a preseason number 1.
NcAA suspensions, Elston injury, Jeremy, Freshman floor leader, and lots more. Coach can’t win COY.

See hammer, see nail, see hammer hit nail squarely on head and I mean SQUARELY on the head. My thoughts and feelings exactly. Seems to be akin to the ole Charlie Brown trying to kick the football that Lucy is holding syndrome doesn’t it ?

  • IUMIKE1

To further solidify your point, I’m not so sure that he does get the players he wants for the most point which as I said only further proves your point IMHO.

  • nathanw

Bo Ryan coach of the year NOT Tom Crean something not right there.

  • Earned and Deserved.

  • InTheMtns

Ha! It is like Lucy holding the football!

  • I’m starting to wonder why he didnt win it his 1st year

  • marcusgresham

How sad must it be for your best interior defender to be a guy named after a chick in “Grease.”

  • marcusgresham

    Downing?

  • IUMIKE1

Not to mention all the bridges that have been built or rebuilt by an endless number of people that affords him a face saving avenue for him to prove he really believes a lot of the things that he says he stands for and the qualities people say they admire about him.

  • IUMIKE1

In my best Storage Wars voice, YUP !! Well put. Up button hit.

  • IUMIKE1

Actually, when it was announced he started looking around at everyone in a very bewildered way hunting for someone that even knew what the work meant.

Honestly I am a huge Tom Crean fan, I go to IU, but you guys don’t understand how it works. Coaching is about making your team better than its worth of individual players. Bo has a team that doesn’t have close to the talent level that IU has. If you watched them you’d realize they play really well together offensively and defensively and are super smart. A lot of that is coaching.

  • mike

Sorry guys, but I think Ryan is the obvious choice. Crean probably should have won it last year, but this year, with all this talent, I feel they actually underachieved so far by losing 5 games. Look what Wisconsin achieved with far less talent even before losing a starting guard to a season-ending injury. Year after year, Ryan produces upper-echelon teams even when his talent base is down. He did it again this year and deserves the Coach of the Year Award, hands down IMO. We mustn’t let our red/white-tinted glasses color our objectivity!

  • mike

C’mon guys, Burke’s overall NUMBERS were much more impressive than Vic’s, and he carried his team more. Scoring/assist/rebound numbers win the POY awards, not deflections or hustle plays or spectacular dunks or defensive shut-downs. That may not be the best way, but it is the way these awards are done. When I looked at the numbers comparison in the paper on Sunday, I knew Burke would win it and honestly I feel he DESERVED to win it. If Vic wants to stick around, he can win it next year … yes, now I’m dreaming.

  • Ole Man

Agreed. Not POed at the young fans. Just get tired of repeated “media points”. Let RMK rest in peace with his book earnings.
He ticked me off when he sold his championship ring!
And have more respect for your “elders” you young “whipper-snappers”. (Spoken with a grin on my face–would love to be your age for just one more game and sit in AH for one more game.)

  • Geoff_85

I don’t disagree with you there. I like it when Coach Crean fires back at other coaches and sticks up for the players and the program. I am to the point where I truly don’t care what other teams, the media, other fans, other coaches, etc. think about Coach Crean. He’s a passionate guy who loves the program and loves his players.

  • plane1972

Yes, Downing. My grandmother’s maiden name was Downey. Synapses misfired.

  • plane1972

You might be on to something there, Hound dog. It did seem like Burke’s award to lose from the outset. I’m okay with it, though. The kid is a great player, benefits from playing the position he does, and has guided a gaggle of youngsters a long way this season. However, I do think he is much closer to his ceiling than Victor or Cody are.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

    I noticed that too.

CTC should be wary of the possibility of the media making him Bob Knight 2.0 based upon antics. He isn’t there yet, but I am sure you understand how quickly the media (mostly television and radio) will cultivate something into what it really isn’t as long as it makes a sensational story. People get villafied by the media in a hurry for the benefit of a story so my humble (and unnecessary) advice to Coach Crean would be to lay low , win games, and get recruits.

Probably sound advice–do a little Teddy Roosevelt impression.

  • Oladipo, not Burke, named Sporting News’ National Player of the Year.
