Film Session: Sheehey’s perfect afternoon

Will Sheehey finished a perfect 9-of-9 from the field en route to a career-high 22 points in Saturday’s blowout win against the Boilermakers. That 9-of-9 mark set an Indiana record for most makes without a miss. Sheehey scored on the break and in Indiana’s halfcourt offense — often making smart reads from the wing to sneak around the defense and score.

A look at three smart reads and a 3-pointer in the latest edition of Film Session:

I. Derek Elston sets a ball screen for Yogi Ferrell on the right wing as Sheehey is set up down in the left corner:

As Ferrell crosses over right, Sheehey starts to curl into the lane as Terone Johnson is watching the action on the strong side of the court:

dunk2

As Johnson looks left for Sheehey on the baseline with Ferrell curling around and drawing the attention of Sandi Marcius, Sheehey fills the open space in the lane:

dunk3

He catches with plenty of room with Marcius drawn even closer to Ferrell:

dunk4

And throws down the monster slam:

dunk5

Sheehey’s ability to see Ferrell making his move while simultaneously leaving Johnson and making his own move to the lane allowed for this jam. This was Sheehey’s third score of the game and the Florida native’s energy — which he thrives off of — was evident midway through the first half here.

OK, crazy story. I celebrated Valentines Day with my wife and two other couples by going out to a nice restaurant that just opened up a few months ago. This was a big deal because I live in Palestine, TX, a town of 18,000 people with not a lot of choices. Anyway, the dinner was great, service was great and we all around had a good time which you could tell by the 3 hours we were there and all the empty wine bottles. Anyway, the owner/chef came out and we applauded him and his wife, the bartender. We get to talking and we mention that we are from Indiana. The wife immediately asks if we are Hoosiers fans. I dare her to find a bigger one in Texas than me. That’s when the Husband says that we are talking to Will Sheehey’s mom! I am immediately in disbelief and start grilling her about where Will went to HS, who was on his team, siblings and she nails all the questions and it finally sinks in that it is really her. I was so fired up, it made my night. You have to understand that no one in in Texas cares about basketball. UT fans don’t even know when the NCAA tournament starts. So, not only did I finally find not only a basketball fan, an IU fan, but I found Will Sheehey’s mom! Then, the next day Will goes on to have a career game….Awesome. I just wish I could afford to go there every night before a game.

Great story..and in Palestine TX to boot! Will is so good coming off screens and going to the hole..I don’t want him to fall in love with the 3-ball Tuesday night. His D will be important also. Win this one for Mom!:)

Sheehey is the heartbeat of this squad.
    Yogi is the steering wheel.
    Cody is the horse.
    Hulls is the dagger.
Watford is the the wild card.
    Oladipo is the spark plug.
Cream is the brains of course.
I could keep this up. All together you hopefully have a national title, and a horribly mixed metaphor.
Tuesday will be epic. A ride through hellfire. The cruicible. Where the buck stops. Sometimes I just like to see my typing.

WS is great at moving without the ball, whether he is looking to receive a pass or set a screen. Always looking to attack, and always has high energy

Gotta love Sheehey. Congrats on a fabulous effort. Great player who’s getting better and better and who brings guts and fire to our squad. Check out some of his tweets. They’re pretty hilarious. This guy’s got no shortage of bravado and confidence. Love it. Keep it up Will. To banner #6!
