Crean expects Oladipo to play against Michigan State

On Monday’s Big Ten coaches teleconference, Indiana coach Tom Crean said he expects junior Victor Oladipo to play in Tuesday’s game at Michigan State.

Oladipo left Sunday’s 83-55 win against Purdue after suffering a sprained left ankle late in the first half and did not return.

“We practiced some yesterday and he went through that,” Crean said.”He’s doing a great job of rehabilitating it. He’s spending a lot of time with Tim Garl so I don’t anticipate that he won’t be ready to go tomorrow night.”

Crean said that despite his injury, Oladipo’s approach to getting in extra work hasn’t changed since the Purdue game.

“He’s getting extra shots, he’s working on his ball handling. It’s just what he does,” Crean said. “He’d probably have to be forced to not come to practice to not have a day where he wasn’t in the gym working. Nothing distracts him, nothing ever gets him out of his commitment. Some players have a routine of work, he has a commitment to work. And I think that really comes forth in his his development as a player.”

Oladipo is averaging 13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and is shooting 63.9 percent from the field.

Great news but in the back of my mind I wonder could Victor be risking further injury? If his teammates are considerate they will start strong and have a 25 point lead so he can rest. LOL

Has anyone else noticed that of the rare times VO gets in trouble handling the ball it can be when he’s trying to go behind the back switching directions from right to left? I’ve just noticed it a couple of times, wanted to see if anyone else thinks I’m seeing things that aren’t there.

btw very relieved it seems like he’s going to play and be close to 100%. He’s awesome.

That’s good news. Hope he’s not risking hurting it more though, would rather have him in march.

Hoping we come out strong, get huge lead and can rest Sir Vic for a strong Big Ten finish. Go Hoosiers

  • Kevin Tolliver

ya but thats really because there isn’t too much more left in his game that isn’t pro level.

Along the lines as everyone else, I’d love to see Oladipo in there helping to beat MSU, but the tournaments are more important. VO probably says he’s fine to play no matter what, I hope the trainers are being honest assessors.

Yup. He has a tendency to dribble it off his heel.

Yes, probably because recently there have been a few turnovers because of it, and in particular a high profile turnover (Illinois).

I would guess that it’s something he’s worked on and only recently has had enough confidence in to try in a game situation, but is moving a bit to fast. It will be devastating if he can master it, with as quickly as he changes direction.

I think it’s something he’s working on — and he’s not going to get better w/ it if he’s not practicing it (in games). I just wish it didn’t come, say, on the last possession at Champaign…

  • SCHoosier

Yea..I hope he puts that move in a suitcase and airmails back to Maryland.Get’s his pocket picked almost every time. Good to hear he’s good to go for MSU…wouldn’t be surprised if Nix tried to kick VO’s ankle first 5 minutes.): Let’s play under control guys regardless of the likely intimidation tactics by the insecure Spartans.

  • Sarasota Hoosier

Will was awesome but does anyone think he has a minor mental block at free throw line this year? He has shot some of the ugliest free throws this season and his stroke was so much better last year.

  • Pritch24

How come we don’t do live game chats on here anymore?

  • oregoniu

He had a fair stroke with lots of arch, then he appeared to start feeling uncomfortable (maybe controlling the arch) with it and started changing it up.

  • Geoff_85

Everyone, just relax. He rolled his ankle. It was labeled a sprain because he was held out of the game as a precaution. If that game was close, he’d have played, and no one would even be worried.

IU will need VO at both ends of the floor tuesday night, i for one think he will be the same old vic, doing what he does well, WIN!! 20 PTS 7 boards, 4 assists and 4 steals plus 2 monster dunks off the break. IU 77 MSU 72

  • IUHoosiers23

If there was even the slightest possibility of Vic doing any further damage to his ankle, they would never let him play. We can throw those questions out the window right now. Biggest game of the season tomorrow night. Let’s get a W!

I don’t think there is a Hoosier in the world who would want Victor to play if he is not 100% ready to go.

I’ve sprained my ankle many times and have actually torn the ligaments in my both ankles. If nothing ripped, he should be fine with an ankle brace. He probably could have gone if the game was tonight.

VO could hurt himself doing a lay up in practice. If it’s not torn, sitting around isn’t going to do anything.

    This….

  • Daniel Coffman

they’ve only been on hoosier scoop the last few games

  • LiveIUBBall

Good to see even if there is any soreness going into Tuesday’s game IU has a full week break before it’s next game. But I agree with most posts I see, seems like something we’ve worried about because the thought is scary, not because it’s a realistic issue.

As someone who has worked in physical therapy and sports medicine for multiple years, and though just watching Victor on tv like everyone else, I think he should be at almost 95-100 % with addition of a support brace or taping. Im sure he has been getting good treatment since Saturday. Lets hope I’m right on this one.
Now, the Tom Coverdale ankle sprain back in the 2002 tournament was just awful.
