Zeller debuts at No. 3 in KenPom POY race

KenPom.com: The 2013 kenpom.com POY race

It’s really a two-man race at this point between Mason Plumlee and Russ Smith. I’ve been championing Smith’s case simply because he doesn’t seem to be getting a fair shake nationally. In addition to large improvements in shooting percentages, Smith plays for the #1 ranked defense in the nation and he plays a significant part in that.

At #3, Cody Zeller has fallen out of favor with the national media and this is another interesting development considering he’s the opposite of Smith in almost every way. Zeller’s numbers are up across the board from last season, which is partly due to the weak schedule the Hoosiers have played. However, when you consider his impressive production against the five top-100 opponents on Indiana’s ledger thus far, he’s probably not due for a ton of regression in league play. His worst games to date have come against Coppin State, Jacksonville, and Georgia.

#3? That’s okay. I hope Zeller gets POY his senior year :-)

The media cycle becomes very predictable. Overhype followed by sending someone down to hell, rinse, repeat. Whether it be Obama, Angelina Jolie, Jeremy Lin, The Muppets, Kardashians, Apple, Peter Jackson, my mom, Breaking Bad, … More controversy more clicks more views more bzzZZzz less boring facts.

Always interesting to see his evaluation of teams and now players.

  • Ole Man

I think that by the end of the B1G season, it will be Plumlee who? Smith who?
Zeller seemed almost overwhelmed by the media attention at the beginning of the year and it showed, somewhat.
He’s too intelligent not to get it figured out (he’s demonstrated that in the past). Plus, he seems to rise to the challenge. I just think the conference will bring out the best in him.

  • HoosierPat

I think that is a biased opinion you have. Plumlee and Smith are two very good players and Cody definitely has some improvements he needs to make.

I guarantee Cody is only concerned about one thing: winning a national championship. It’s unbelievable how people have done a 180 on the guy. Okay, he’s only human and doesn’t score 30 a game. But shouldn’t we be more excited about how capable this team is with nearly six guys averaging double figures? That’s the reason he’s not scoring more. So he has a few sub par games and the majority of pundits and people on this forum are now chasing him around with torches. What do you want? Cody getting some stupid award and us not winning banner number six? I’ll take a national championship any day over POY. And I am 100% sure Mr. Zeller would, too.

How come Cody doesn’t have IU shaved in the back of his head like Nerlens Noel has UK for kentucky? Oh, never mind I know why…..Cody has CLASS!!!!

Any hype for the Kardashians is over-hype. They are nothing and have never done anything. Why do we even have to know, as a society, that they exist?

I’ve been as hard on Zeller as anyone, but I still think he’s great. I think, as talented as he is, he’s still learning the game in regards to footwork, which I’m confident he’ll do.
Here’s a statistic that will suggest that his numbers will stay as they are if not increase: 27.4. Those are the minutes per game Cody is currently logging. You would have to assume those numbers will increase during the conference games.

If Cody isn’t in this race maybe he will stick around another year. Question: Who is everyone rooting for Illinois at Purdue? On one hand we dislike Purdue but Ill is more of a competitor.

  • Ryan Mehringer

I couldn’t agree more. IU has so many scoring options that CZ isn’t going to put up gaudy numbers like other POY candidates. It seems like people forget not very long ago these same hoosiers couldn’t put up these scoring numbers without him there. Other teams put so much focus on him it gives all of our hoosiers great looks to average double figures and i personally think that a balanced team will go a long way come March.

  • slojoe

If Smith and Plumlee are the main competition for Zeller, he’s got it wrapped up.

  • Hammer

Are we talking about the same Plumlee that had 10pts tonite against Davidson????

180? Torches? Ehhhh i dont think so. All peeps are saying is he is not playing like the best player in the country. Which he is not.

  • Scott Berryman

I would rather have banner 6 as I am sure Cody would as well. However, we will not get a 6 th banner unless CZ gets tougher and CTC can sure up a half court offense that looks efficient and can score a win in tough environments. That means an inside out half court O that features feeding the post and letting CZ score or pass to the opposite wing for 3′s.

??? What does that have to do with anything? Kids get stupid haircuts. Nothing to do with class.

Thats the issue I was about to raise. He’s not logging nearly as many minutes per game as he did last year, and yet his numbers are up.

  • Ole Man

Amen, Scott. Good thoughts and I couldn’t agree more. And it’s not dissing anyone to express those ideas; because we sure aren’t doing much of it now.

  • Ole Man

Did you watch Plumlee against Duke last night? Its the first time he’s had to play against a decent big man; and the first time the refs let ‘em play. He had six turnovers; was called for walking (and could have easily been called for more). I think his post move should be called the “Plumlee Shuffle”.
Smith needs way more consistency, in my humble opinion.
And yes, I am slightly biased.

  • Sherronhasaheadache

people need to just quit talking about this POY crap for CZ, open your eyes people he’s not even the best player on the roster, and i think he could really care less about it. he is a team player that just wants to win. the great thing is we’ll see him in candy Stripes next year!! GO HOOSIERS!!

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

In the grand scheme of things Cody will do tremendous things. No excuses here but his bronchitis might as well been a physical injury. Oxygen and proper breathing are paramount when playing at your peak physical ability, so he did encounter some severe limitations. He runs the floor as good as any guard and will continue to do so. I feel Cody should stay at least another year and if he does so at that point the POY would be his to lose. I would say at this very moment Cody is more concerned with winning every B1G game, Banner 6, and his spring semester than what people are saying about his POY chances. Cody—Do what you do, and we are behind you regardless of unimportant opinions. Keep up the hard work on your academics, and basketball prgression. Hoosier Nation is behind you.
