HD Video: Jaquan Lyle talks IU, recruiting at NBPA Top 100 Camp

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Evansville Bosse guard Jaquan Lyle is among a select group of class of 2014 prospects participating in this week’s NBPA Top 100 Camp.

Lyle, a consensus top-20 prospect nationally, talked to Inside the Hall after his opening game of the camp at the University of Virginia about his interest in Indiana, his recruitment and much more:

I just get the feeling IU is not going all out for this kid until they gauge the mutual interest with some other elite PGs. Not sure Jaquan fits the Crean PG mold real well. I think Crean likes an aggressive fast/quick guy at the point. Jaquan seems like he’s more of a long methodical PG.

I’d love to have him but based on us not going hard at him I’m guessing the staff is more in love with a couple other guys at this point? Maybe I’m full of it

Not sure how to view his comments about Indiana. Was it more of a, “I will say nice things about Indiana even though we haven’t been talking and because an IU guy is interviewing me, or ” IU hasn’t been talking to me, they are still very much in the picture and I hope to be hearing from them”?

I wouldnt see why we wouldnt want him. Indiana kid, 5 star point guard, and freinds with at least 2 IU commits. The videos Ive seen he can flat out play. Maybe the best passer in high school in America.

dude, this kid wants to hear from IU. they may not think it’s worth their time, but he for sure wants to hear from the Hoosiers. just not connecting. in the twitter world, not “hearing from them in a minute” when it’s only been like 10 days, still seems like an eternity.

I hate to say this about an Indiana kid, but everything about him reminds of a classic Calipari recruit. Wouldn’t be surprised or disappointed if he went to UK. He’s a great passer, but we’ll have plenty of PG’s to choose from who fit Crean’s less flashy, more fundamental style.

I didn’t like the way he kept looking around the room like he wanted to be anywhere but talking to the guy from IU.

    OMG

Dude, the kid is 15 or 16 years old … outside of school and video games, this is probably the longest he has to sit in one spot.

Personally, I don’t understand why Crean and his staff wouldn’t at least stay in touch with a player of his caliber. Saying that he, “Called coach McClain and he didn’t return my call” tells me one of two things… either this is not 100% true or Crean and Staff either doesn’t like something (that is a big deal) about him… whether it be something about his game, or something off the court. But, come on… he has crazy game… sure he is not the 5’10” speedster like Yogi, or Hyron Edwards, but he is a 6’4” point guard who has a VERY mature game for his age. Would love to see this kid in an IU jersey. I do not buy the stuff about “This kid doesn’t fit the system”… Is Jordan hulls an attack the basket, ultra athletic PG??? No, but the system still yeilded success this season.

A player of this caliber, who seems to have interest (enough to reach out to a school by phone) deserves, at the very least, a call back. If this is indeed true. If it is exaggerated… I still would want to know that IU is doing everything they can to land this rare, consensus top 10, in-state talent. MUCH rather see the staff pursuing Jaquan as opposed to Malik Harris, Phil Booth or Shane Hall. Maybe it’s me, but I think it is a lot more likely, and see a lot more return, in the possibility of signing Jaquan, as opposed to any other guard on the recruiting board.

Sure, Tyus Jones would be a great sign… he may even end up being a more productive player. But, I would much rather see the Staff going after an in-state kid who has shown interest and is ranked similarly than spending the money and recruiting efforts on a kid who is likely to go to one of the NBA-U’s. PLEASE… RECRUIT JAQUAN. If this is necessary… RETURN HIS CALLS. He would be a valuable player in our (hopefully) 6th, 7th, or 8th banner!!!

I watched another video interview that’s posted by Jody Demling and the whole thing seems like a communication misfire. If Jaquan and Coach Crean were to talk one-on-one I bet they could figure this out in a couple minutes. To me, it seems like Jaquan really wants IU due to Trey and James going, it’s close to home, ranked #1, etc. He probably played a little too hard to get and our coaching staff figured they better move on. If IU really wants him and he really wants IU…geeeze, have a conversation. Let’s stop with the cat and mouse stuff. If there’s something else going on here then I have no idea what it is.

No disrespect, but stick to the message boards. I trust CTC and his staff on this one. I know 2 pretty high assistant D1 coaches that have also backed off. Agree in state talent to a degree, but Booth to Jaquan is a no brainer and less headaches.

    Cole,

I completely agree. Unless there is something about Jaquan that we haven’t been exposed to that the coaching staff has and does not like, I see no reason not to actively pursue him. A strong 6’4 guard who I also agree is one of the top passers in the country. I am hoping that this was a way for him to let the coaching staff know that we are still a big part of his recruiting picture and that our Coaching staff at least follows up and figures all of this out

    Me too!

Watched him play here in Evansville and sat behind his family. They were rude and he seemed pouty at times. He was 16, so I won’t hold that against him, but maybe he just has an attitude problem. He and his coach went to the papers when he wasn’t selected to the all-state team. Again, he’s only 16 so maybe he will grow up.

  • MillaRed

I too hear that attitude is the #1 thing to evaluate with this kid. Technicals, tossed a game I think?

If we are not recruiting him then something is not going well obviously.

I didn’t even recognize him without the flat-top.

Being from Evansville, I get the distinct feeling that JaQuan wants to go to one of the “NBA-U’s” as well.
