Indiana offers 2013 JUCO forward Jameel McKay

As first reported by Dave Spahn of Slam Magazine, Indiana has offered a scholarship to 2013 Indian Hills Community College forward Jameel McKay after watching him work out today for the second time in a week.

McKay told Inside the Hall this afternoon that he did receive an offer from the Hoosiers and Indian Hills coach Barrett Peery confirmed the offer to Dustin Dopirak of The Herald-Times.

The 6-foot-8, 190-pound forward, a Milwaukee native, averaged 14.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in his freshman season at Indian Hills. He was named a first team NJCAA All-American.

McKay will play next season at Indian Hills, based in Ottumwa, Iowa, before moving onto to play two seasons at a Division I school beginning in the fall of 2013.

Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Memphis and Missouri are also recruiting McKay, according to his Rivals profile.

I like what I see from this kid! Athletic, long armed, defensive specialist. And also a monster on the boards. He can definitely give us depth down low defensively.

Some of these JuCo kids can be real steals. My friends dad was the assistant coach at Vincennes University when they developed Shawn Marion. Turned into one hell of a D-1 player at UNLV afterwards.

Not hating on this decision as I’m quite confident that Crean knows a lot more that I do, but does anyone know when those measurements were taken? High school hopefully and havent been updated in a couple years. 6’8, 190? Is he going to be Elston’s new curling bar?

I am making the assumption that Anya is no longer an option for IU.  I think CTC is looking for another big man and a PG for the 2013 class.  Recent strong interest in Jameel McKay and Maverick Morgan would indicate IU is not going to wait long for a decision from Anya and miss out on other potential big men.  Having gone back and looked at some of the Anya footage, I am not sure he fits into our fast-paced offense.  He is more of a physical half court player.  I think CTC prefers the big guys to do what Zeller did this year (high transition offense).  Jurkin and Fischer both can get up and down the court quickly.  My only concern about McKay is that he is built like a SF that can rebound.  We already have JH in 2012 and DD in 2013 that seem to be very similar type players.  Having made an offer so quickly tells me there is something going on that none of us are aware of yet.  Other than in 1987, I have never been a big fan of JUCO players.  Most elite schools don’t recruit from the JUCO ranks.

Most elite schools don’t get juco kids with regularity, but they do go that route when it’s right for them.  UCLA has a juco guard (I know they didn’t have a great year this season so that may be a poor example,) Larry Johnson went to UNLV and Bob McAdoo to UNC from juco schools (McAdoo from Vincennes.)

Don’t forget Harris Moo-yay-zeen-a-vich. Have no clue how his name was spelled. I remember his little cousin played for Jasper in 96 with Michael Lewis, those bastards beat us in the regionals at Washington.

IU was in to see Anya this week. Still an option for certain but why wait around on any kid not named zeller, gordon, or ferrell

From the video I have seen he is similar to a Jeff Newton. Don’t let the JUCO label fool you, being a JUCO all american is not an easy task. He could absolutely help.

  • cdog

I still have bad memories of our last JUCO all-american… Jamarcus Ellis.  Him and DeAndre Thomas did more harm than good.  I hope he is more like Keith Smart.

  • Big_Shot_C_Wat

I like the JUCO players. They seem to be a little tougher than the true freshmen. I was a big fan of Will Gladness, Lynn Washington and Todd Jadlow.

  • HoosierDadE

    Good stuff Kelin

Maybe because I work with a Marquette grad but two JUCO all american’s were discussed regularly during the season…

Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder…they were two pretty good JUCO players

  • Big D

Maybe they think Zeller will be gone in another year.

  • SCHoosier

I tend to agree with you..of course this guy is only a two year scholarship commitment..but if Crean thought Anya was gonna be available to IU I think he might have waited.??

  • Benhyoung14

JUCO’s aren’t so bad, especially if they were 1st team all american’s as a freshmen.  As long as he fits, and it looks like he does.  Zeller will likely be gone by 2014 and McKay would be another Senior.  I like Beejay, but it comes down to who fits better in the system.

  • shime

How long can we wait for Anya is the question. It is hard telling from this video but has a nice shot and looks athletic. But he needs to hit the weights hard. With that said another year of these kind of workouts and another year of JC and hitting the weights might be our best option. We cannot wait on Anya forever.

Who is the other player working out he looks like a darn good player

  • Casey B.

Not trying to be that guy, and I know “you never stop recruiting,” but at some point, you actually do within a class. How many players (including the oversign) can we sign for this class? We’re running out of players I’d be comfortable seeing pack their bags…

Perhaps it’s time to start being a tad more selective and focused on the handful of guys we REALLY want. Feel like our staff uses a shotgun technique when it comes to offers.

  • Graham_934

Missouri = Elite,  Pierre Jackson = JUCO

  • 323SGrant

Uh oh. Apparently has relatives in Arkansas. I hope he doesn’t pull a B.J. Young on us!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Hmm.  JUCO players are often overlooked and under-recruited but this guy seems to be a pleasant surprise.

Nice form on the jumpshot and he jumps incredibly well.  This but very athletic.

  • marcusgresham

Mujezinovic, but it was “Haris” with one “r”.

I remember that game—Ken Oppel decided to just let Lewis “get his” and hope to stop the rest of ‘em. Lewis got 45.

  • marcusgresham

Yep, Thomas ate both of those (and everything else he could find.)

I had no idea, until the tournament, that Crowder is Corey Crowder’s son.

I think we are experiencing more of the norm in recruiting like other programs but have never been exposed to it. This is what most schools do as opposed to getting caught with 2nd tier talent or guys are not big ten level. What happens if you wait and be selective then Cody says bye bye….. who do you run too?

  • John

I have been thinking he will be , esp if IU is as good as everyone expects next year.  What motivation will Zeller have to return?  He will be a man among boys.  And can still get his degree by going to a few summer schools.

  • 888

Casey has good point but you have a better point. CTC knows that things are lining up to lose Cody and possibly Vic next year. A juco all-American would be a smart move imo. All the guys were recruiting in 2013 are players that will help us. I really like all three commitments. They will be staples in this program for years to come. Does Davis’s game remind you of Micheal Kidd-Gilchrist? He does me. I see him being that type of player and dont understand the Draymond comoparisons. Gilchrist made his living in the lane and on the boards not on the perimeter like Green. Davis is relentlees like Gilchrist on the boards as well. Total competitors.

I know Ive said it before but Davis is the recruit im most excited about. Not because hes the best (Trey Lyles is) but because  I see Kidd-Gilchrists game in him. No way UK wins the title without him. He was our Ricky Calloway in 1987. I love players that do the dirty work. Play D, rebound, give hard fouls if nedded, go to the hole to get fouled. Davis is relentless and hes being coached by a guy who took a back seat to other players for the sake of the TEAM. Greg Graham would have been an all-American on any other team. He didnt have to score 25 a game till Henderson went down and when he did he picked up Alans scoring. Davis is gonna be whatever CTC needs him to be and I love those types of players.

  • Joepop

How bout jae crowder, big east poty, and darius Johnson odom, first team big east, as well as jimmy butler, first round pick for the bulls…. All pretty great 2-3 year college players for marquette

  • marcusgresham

I get that Zeller could theoretically be gone at any time, but I don’t see where this kid would be a replacement for him. I’m not disparaging him or saying he shouldn’t be recruited, but he’s not likely to play the same spot as Cody.

  • dtfreed

this is an offer he has not accepted so talk of others [Anya] shouldn’t be dismissed, maybe its pressure for Anya to make a decision.

  • SCHoosier

Needs some meat on da bones! Looks like he play either the 3 or 4 position.Remember its an “offer”…kid has to accept to create a roster problem. I think among other things, offer was designed to maybe push other people to “focus” on their decision.
that other kid doesn’t look bad either.

  • NotTheRealSteveEyl

Man, I loved Newton.  Not that he was a worldbeater or anything, but “Newtron”‘s game always appealed to me.  Wonder what happened to that kid?

Pierre Jackson plays for Baylor right?

  • plane1972

Does anyone remember Jadlow’s intentional chest pass into a guy’s face on an inbound play? I think it was during a tournament game. I remember being surprised the defender didn’t come completely unglued. Jadlow had a mean streak.

Thanks Al Gore for inventing it!

  • plane1972

I agree with your enthusiasm over D. Davis. I believe he will turn out to be a real find for Crean.

You and I remember Ricky Calloway differently. Ricky enjoyed the offensive end of the floor much more than the defensive. I always thought of him as more finesse than the hard-nosed, do-everything guy you describe. I view Eyl, Hillman and Sloan as the cleanup crew on the ’87 team.

  • plane1972

Agreed. Crean has his eyes set on Luke Fisher as Cody’s heir apparent (straight out of Fisher’s mouth), even though I don’t believe you truly replace a Cody Zeller.

  • Big_Shot_C_Wat

I think it was against Iowa and Dr. Tom. Michael Lewis did the same  thing to Iowa. I guess the Iowa players were too close to the out of bounds line.
