A trio of 2012 IU signees — Jeremy Hollowell, Ron Patterson and Hanner Mosquera-Perea — arrived on Wednesday to begin preparation for Friday’s Derby Festival Basketball Classic at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.

Their first stop was Basketball Academy where they met with the media for interviews and gathered for practice. Inside the Hall was there as all three talked about their future in Bloomington, their expectations for next season and much more:

Gonna be a hell of a game Friday

  • Haystacks

Are there any rosters online to check who is playing in this event? (outside of IU guys)

  • Is this game going to be televised any where or even played at a later date cause I would love to watch it?

  • IU87

Alex, what is the one or two things you need to work on before you get to Bloomington this fall?

  • One or two? You’re only going to limit me to one or two? I could list five or six.

There were a couple of changes due to injury, though.

No question everybody coming brings something, but I’m pulling for Ron to surprise everyone!

The movement better understand the pressure is on. We are now the hunted. Haven’t been like this in two decades. This is crazy. 1 or 2 in every poll. You cannot lose to Nebraska or Iowa next year.

Is there enough basketballs to go around?

is this going to be televised anywhere Alex?

  • Lee Timmer

This might seem off topic, but I don’t know where else to post it. The incoming class is known as “The Movement,” which I think is a great name for what’s to come. However, I haven’t heard anyone call this year’s team anything special. It might sound trite, but years from now, it’ll be easier to call them something catchy rather than “the team that beat Kentucky.” I keep thinking “The Resurgence” sounds nice.

Alex, I read somewhere that the dunk/3point contest is free with a ticket to the game firday. Is that correct

  • Correct.

  • Have not heard of any television coverage. If I do, will pass it along.

+ Good to hear kids talk about playing defense and rebounding.
+ Jeremy, you are playing for second place in a dunk contest with Hanner
+ There is a lot less pressure on these guys next year which helps them develop
+ Hanner with more strength is scary
+ Someone explain to me how Moses Abraham played in this game solely because IU was recruiting him and Peter Jurkin didn’t get an invite?

  • SCHoosier

Love the poise these guys show as high schoolers. Hollowell is gonna surprise..especially if Calbert gets to work with him one on one. Love it that Crean already has a plan to improve Patterson’s shot with form changes and more disicipline of shot selection. Perea….kid is a bit of a mystery..but the upside just based on his athletic ability is exciting. One thing they will all face…pace of the game and tougher defensive pressure. Won’t have all those open shots they had on the ITH tapes:)

  • N71

Peter seems more of a mystery versus Hanner.  Speaking as a fan who lives in Indy I feel I have a decent understanding of Hanner and then a really good understanding of Ron, Yogi, and Jeremy.  Peter I really don’t.  There’s something about Ron that’s endearing.  He comes across as young so you can’t help but want to see him succeed.  You want him confident but not cocky and he handles himself well considering he’s going from a relatively small IPS school to a campus of 35,000 and on national TV on a regular basis.  With his personality and the way he plays, like Victor or Craft, we’ll just fall in love with him.  Yogi, Ron, and Cody I suspect will have shorter stays at IU due to the NBA calling but Ron will likely be with us for 4 years and become a major entity within the program…like Green became for MSU.

  • Hoosierfan2335

Great interviews! These guys seem confident and excited to come to bloomington without being entitled. Can’t wait to see them play tomorrow.

  • ChiHoosier

I kind of compare Hanner’s progression at IU similar to VO’s.  Both are very athletic and Crean and the coaches have helped develop VO into a crazy good defender and continue to help him improve on the offensive side.  I think Hanner will be in the same situation.  With his freak ability, he will be looked at for his defensive ability to change shots in the paint and I have a feeling he will be the same as VO was his freshman year on offense, aka alley oop city(LA Clippers part 2) with Yogi playing Chris Paul and Hanner playing Griffin!

With all the depth at guard next year i wonder if it would be a good idea to redshirt Ron. I think hed be better served to play alot as a fifth year senior than mop up as a freshman. With all his athletic ability I think hed be awsome in 5 years. Were starting to be in a position to do this sort of thing and its great for our program and its players. Nover and Odle had really great fifth years and I can see Ron being even better. Wasnt Uve a 5 year player as well? What does the rest of you think?

  • 888

I agree about these two guys. It just shows that CTCs strenght is developing players. 2 or 3 years of Hanner being shown how to play and well see an NBA lottery pick type of player. You just cant teach what he has and only a handful of people in the WORLD can do what he can. He just needs great coaching to bring it out and we all know he picked the best place to get that.

  • 888

No Kidding! Most people in the NBA would be playing for second place in a dunk contest against Hanner as well. I cant remember anybody like him athletically that weve ever had.Maybe Andre Harris??? Josh Smith would have been but we know how that turned out. This guy just oozes potential! Sports Center meet Hanner! I would love to be able to watch our guys go at eachother in practice next year. Its gonna be absolutely BRUTAL. Wonder if CTC will have to try to keep things calmat times? If injures start to happen Id think hell have to but man it would be fun to watch. Id say UKs practices were probably nothing like it cause they only had 6 good players. Should make games seem easy when the guy your going against in practice is better than the guys your playing against in most games.

  • Casgo

Hanner in these interviews just seems like he has the best poise (besides yogi) of the class. He seems humble enough as well but I certainly hope he uses his athleticism to it’s fullest potential, he is by no means where Griffin was when he left for the nba but I could see a very close resemblence with further development…..

  • SCHoosier

this game is part of the Derby Fesitval week which has a lot of community events with proceeds going to  charity. I suspect TV-ing that game would hurt the local gate..and those profits. Then again..ESPN or somebody could offer a nice rights fee and open it up.

  • Rikker68

I highly doubt Cody leaves early unless he gets his degree early. His family puts a high importance on education. I would be beyond stunned if this were to happen.

  • DAVBIRD

last call on the season””GREAT”3points away from tying for big ten champs, one lost point guard  from going who knows how far in ncaa tourny picked in the top 3 by everyone and favored by some to win it all in 2013. but for this thing to work certain things have to happen.the freshmen have start to iu as sone as possible, upper classman need towork well with under classmen threw the summer and last but not least chris watford needs about playing for iu next year getting better , higher in draft cutting some nets along the way and gettig what chris diserves,or play some where he cant hear the cheers anymore.

  • Trockey

I’ve got news for you. Iowa will be no joke… They will be tough to be at their house. Don’t discount them.

  • Trockey

I disagree about the pressure. I think the pressure will be higher. People are going to expect a record better than 27-9. That is tough in the B1G.

  • HoosierFromCt

Pretty sure Hanner is playing for second place when VO steps onto the court.

I’ve always thought Hollowell’s game and appearance reminded me of Cheaney . Can’t wait to see them tomarrow here in Louisville .

3O DAYS TIL THE KY DERBY !!!!!!!!! CAN’T WAIT … COME ON DOWN FOR DERBY AND ENJOY THE PARTY OF YOUR LIFE !! IT’S 2 WEEKS LONG.

  • Luke72

Peter is not a project, he really needs to develop some more upper body strength but give him a year and he will be able to give a good 15-20 a game. Potiential to be one of the best shot blockers to come to IU in a long time!

  • pdxhoosier

I heard this year’s squad referred to (possibly even on this site, can’t remember now) as The Foundation. I like that.

  • Luke72

I can see the Cheaney connection, would’nt it be great to have another Calbert on the floor!!

  • Batdan65

I think they should be known as “The Foundation”, since it is all built on their starting from the ground up. Any thoughts

  • Indiana_Banners

People say this but leaving early doesn’t preclude getting an education at all. Rivers is leaving but he is finishing his spring classes at Duke because he plans to complete his degree at a later date, for example.

    Good luck Hoosiers!

  • Lee Timmer

“The Foundation” sounds fine to me. I just hadn’t heard it before.

  • Donde165

I had the chance to referee 5 games this year at LaLumeire. Hanner is the absolute real deal. IU fans are in for a treat. Plus he is an outstanding person with a great attitude.
