ESPN.com: Rebuilt Hoosiers will join the elite

1. Indiana

Surprised? Putting Indiana No. 1 isn’t a reach, and it speaks volumes about how far Tom Crean has brought the Hoosiers. There was legitimate grumbling in the Hoosier Nation a year ago, wondering whether the rebuilding was taking too long. Well, IU had two of the more significant wins of the 2011-12 regular season and then reached the Sweet 16, where it pushed Kentucky as well as any team. Cody Zeller has to stay put for Indiana to remain No. 1 of course. But if Zeller is back, the Hoosiers — with nearly everyone returning and joined by another elite recruiting class — will be right there in the running for a national title.

Sorry but the last thing I want to see is the Hoosiers ranked  #1 in pre-season. Too much damn pressure….on the kids when  the “movement” is going to create enuff. I like them better staying hungry..if they earn it with their play..so be it. Wat leaves..its another story anyway. You don’t think some chemistry time is going to be needed for the new group coming in? IU’s early non-conference schedule should also be toughened. Would love to have the Hoosiers ranked number1 following next year’s  NCAA tournament..anytime before that may negatively impact the “movement momentum”:) big target on the back..we don’t need.

  • The forecast has at least a little something to do with those $6 seats.

  • NotTheRealSteveEyl

Well, we played UK tough, but I’m not sure I agree.

Our defense has to improve A TON before we can talk about banners.

All this hype is making me nervous…

  • dfitz

As long as maybe being #1 and stomping pUKe we can match the 76 team and go undefeated and win the national championship.
That should be be good enough for Coach Crean to be #5 in the Coach of the Year voting behind Izzo, Cal, Humpty Dumpty, and Mickey Mouse

  • stevetodd73

Ya but this nervous is a lot better than last years “are we going to win more than 50% of our games” nervous. And I am pretty sure all die-hard I.U. fans are nervous regardless of the situation. I love it!! And Ya I am nervous already also.

  • NotTheRealSteveEyl

Sorry to rain on the parade, but all this hype makes me nervous.  I’d rather be a little more under the radar.  Just a few thoughts/facts:

~We lost to UK by 12. Baylor lost by 12.  The Ville and KU both lost by 8.  Some of that can be explained by the pace of the game when we played, but still…
~UK scored 102 on us last weekend.  Their previous season high was 87 (I’m not counting the 108 they hung on Marist in preseason)
~We have a good recruiting class coming in.  But so does UK.  If UK ads Nerlens Noel and /or Shabazz Muhammad,  they will clearly have a more highly regarded recruiting class than us.

I think we will be really good next year, and we have the potential to be great.  But, as somebody says above, let’s win a big ten title first before we assume we’re going to the final four.

For one thing, if we don’t improve our D (I include defensive rebounding in defense), we will struggle to really excel.

I’m as excited as everyone else, but let’s not set ourselves up for disappointment if we don’t get to the final four next year.  Crean is building a program here, and he’s doing it the right way.

  • stevetodd73

You are hearing it from me first! @CallMeMC3 will lead the big ten in 3 pointers made & percentage!!!!!!

  • stevetodd73

Don’t forget about @Buss34 ! Talk about deflections

  • stevetodd73

The Big Ten is so tough but could you imagine winning regular season and tourney title? That would be dominance!!!!

  •  Kentucky may have a better class coming in but we still have our players from last year. We are going to be deeper than any team in the country next year by far. Our recruits have also already played together in AAU so that could help with a lot of freshman mistakes that they might not make because they already are familiar with each other.

  • NotTheRealSteveEyl

All true, and I think depth really helps in the regular season and when injury strikes, but in the postseason, I’m not sure it’s anywhere near as important.  UK basically plays six guys, OSU and KU play 7, etc.

  • Evansville Hoosier

IU will almost undoubtedly fall a little bit before the season starts, because that’s what happens when other teams add top 10 recruits. Honestly, that’s fine with me. There’s not enough great recruits left to knock us out of the preseason top 5, which is right where I’d like us to be. Still considered elite of elite, but not near as much pressure as number one.

  • millzy32

They shouldn’t be hurting as long as Jeff is sending home some checks.

I hate to say it but unless Creek returns to tip top form then there really won’t be much of a spot for him on the team.  Definitely won’t be any room for him if he’s as hobbled as he was when he attempted to come back last year.

However, if he is in tip top form then we could really really really be good next year.  Sadly I don’t think he’ll ever return to pre-injury form.  Stranger things have happened though and I do wish him the best.  Hummel came back pretty strong this year so I guess anything is possible.

  • iujammin73

Watched Yogi in the McD and he looks like he could be the best pg in the country next year to go with CZ, the best center in the country. And Hollowell looked awesome in the North-South All-Star game–passing, shooting, dunking, defense…he could be a star next year.

  • millzy32

I like your optimism.  We know Cody is going to come back stronger and even better.  Will and Vic should be improved as well.  Yogi can run the show and let Hulls become the 3 point specialist and backup pg.  Heck maybe Yogi is the backup PG.

    Can’t Wait.

  • millzy32

Well if we start in the top 5 and play well at the beginning of the season like this year and have no losses for a while then at some point we’ll probably hit #1.  Bring on the pressure.  It’s just good to be back in the hunt.

I remember in 87 IU was ranked #1 and randomly got beat by a bad Vanderbilt team.  Having a target on your back all season long can toughen you up for the post season where every game is a fight.

  • marcusgresham

just ditch the “bird” section of that word

  • marcusgresham

I tend to agree—I’d believe Will Sheehey would climb in you like an angry gerbil if you gave less than he thought you should be giving.

  • marcusgresham

I’d like him to tighten up the ballhandling a bit, too.  I truly think if he can become a top-notch dribbler he has the potential to run the point in the NBA—maybe not as a starter, but he could be on a roster.  He’s already a good passer who sees lanes, he just needs to have better control.

Wait till the three uncommitted McD’s All-Americans..decide where to go. It could be all to one place..wear the blue and white..watch the ratings change. These kids are simply waiting to see who leaves which program which allows them the best chance to go..impact and be one and done.

that;s the kind of gibberish our players DON’T need to hear or pay any attention too (ESPN’s)

  • Evansville Hoosier

Right, but depth in the regular season gives us the opportunity to basically see who that 7 will be in the postseason, instead of it being determined before the season starts out of necessity.

  • Sherronhasaheadache

we are gonna be right there next year. can’t wait

  • Evansville Hoosier

If they all go to one team, then that one team jumps us. You’re saying there’s still enough high quality recruits for five teams to jump us before the season starts. I don’t see how that’s possible.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

In respect of MC I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt until the team says otherwise. The guy has been in pain for us since Dec of 2009. It is a solid argument though based on that but I am staying positive until he is ruled out of the team. Something in my gut, heart, and mind tells me he is resilient enough and has had the time to heal mentally and physically. With my own eyes I saw him in street clothes draining 40 footers one after another after another after another in warmups before we beat Ohio State.

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

    Baaaaaagggghhhhhh!!!

  • SCHoosier

Not saying anyone’s gonna jump us..but the usual suspects already have strong recruiting classes..and if one program should get lucky enuff to get 2 of the 3 undecided..especially if its UK.(.where Coach Cal knows how to do the one and done deal)…they will get a lot of media attention..and frankly would prefer somebody else to get it pre-season. IU was helped so much by the media hype of their two big upset wins and a Sweet 16 appearance…gave Crean a lot of recuriting mojo. gonna take a while to get team chemistry together next year with rotations etc…let the other guys get the pre-season hype..lets earn ours on the court.

I lol’d at that comment.  I think you could kind of see it towards the end of the year where Oladipo was taking on more of a leadership role.  Hulls will still be the leader next season but Sheehey and Oladipo will replace VJIII as the enforcer.  Watford and Zeller will be the lead-by-example guys.

  • Pb1230

Yeah, if Hulls plays like he did against UK next year, you can make a case that he’ll be the starting pg

  • Pb1230

what made this years UK team so good was that in addition to their great recruiting class they returned 3 guys that played 30+ minutes the previous year.  This coming year, the most minutes by a returning guy might be 11 (Witjer)

  • Ditto on Yogi. At the end of the game when the other team scored like 14 straight points, who did they put on the floor? Yogi. And they didn’t get any closer than 7-8 the rest of the way

  • Aubreyhouse

    Gee that is GREAT!
Now, start practicing hard and win some games.
Coach Crean will keep them focused.
    Go HOOSIERS!

  • bfoutty

well, my day just got a lot better…BANNER UP!!!

  • Hoosier4life67

Can’t wait for next season to get here. Yogi will have so many assist he’s liable to break records with the shooters this team will have next year. HOO HOO HOO HOOSIERS!!!!!!!!
