Courier-Journal.com: Derek Willis picks Kentucky

The toll of the recruiting process was getting to Bullitt East junior Derek Willis, looking to see what coaches were coming to his games and then having to answer the same questions over and over again.

So, Willis decided he needed to make a decision.

And this time, the 6-foot-9 top-30 prospect nationally in the Class of 2013 said it’s his final decision. Willis, who committed to Purdue last summer only to later back off that commitment, announced on Friday that he committed to the University of Kentucky.

“He’s 100 percent sure,” coach Troy Barr said.

Considered the best college prospect in Kentucky among any class, Willis selected the Wildcats over Purdue, Indiana and Louisville.

No problem in my mind..if we get Ziegler and/or Anya

I’m not that disappointed that IU didn’t get him.  We have enough young men his size and ability coming to IU over the next couple of years!  I doubt he will get much playing time as a Freshman or Sophomore @ UK.  Oh well…best of luck to him.

Worst kept secret in recruiting history. Seems to a misunderstanding of the word, committment, at least this time Cal did’nt talk him into it on a cell phone while the
other team had expected the commit. UK adds another semi-pro!

Not too mad there.  I like Devin Davis and Lyles.  Trust me, Davis will get more credibility as his hs career progresses, he is great.  I would prefer we get a bigger body that is a true 4 or 5.  Willis would have been too similar to other players on the roster.

Good luck to the young man. Let’s move on.

Agree, both would be nice.  Anya would be that dump truck in the lane we need to deal with MSU and OSU.  A guy with some god given junk in the truck that could hold his ground.  Kind of like that yellow cement pole you ran into in the parking lot when learning to ride your bike as a kid.  It just didn’t move and you never ran into it again.

Not a good fit for IU so no loss here in my view.  Just another Gunner Kiel.  He might decommit from KY still even, who knows.  Probably needs a good coach (not the one he chose obviously) to teach him how to be a man and honor his word.

Some like tradition. Some prefer suitcases with money. Next.

  • Everybody new this kid was not coming to IU and I don’t think to many people are disappointed in his decision. I personally did not even enjoy his recruiting process after what he did to Purwho! Kentucky Fans say anywhere but IU, and I agreed. Very excited with who we have committed and what coach has done for us, ie, Indiana boys baby.

Shocker! Kentucky kid playing for Kentucky. Every 4 or 5 years when that state finally produces a decent player they stay home. If they could only  recruit in state players their program would be doomed because they only produce one every 4 to 5 years and they know it. Anyas better.

I just don’t get the feeling we are going to get Anya. I could be wrong but I just don’t see it. He has a ton of teams on his list of interests. I think he stays close to home. Georgetown maybe. Would be very pleasantly surprised if we landed him.

Kentucky fans seem to be underwhelmed at the commitment. Anya is who I’m hoping we get for that class.

No longer interested. Bet he never plays at uk. Slimapari will just recruit over him. Too bad because he seems like a nice kid…and he DID blow off pu.

According to scholarship numbers he would have been an oversign.  So who is giving up a scholarship next year to make numbers work to bring in the movement?

N71!..Your post cracked me up…right on target:)

Hanner is a lean, springy, very athletic shot blocker and offensive rebound/tip in type of guy.  Anya is much thicker, heavier, not as athletic type.  Anya is a counter to Sullinger or Nix, a 6’9″ 265lb unmovable fixture.

And we already have an oversign problem, and potential extra year(s) for Creek!

This is more than ok with me , I’d really like to get Anya instead .Willis is good but i believe Anya is better !
