Film Session: How Indiana destroyed Howard

by in Film Session | December 22nd, 2011

As noted in Monday’s TMA, Indiana’s offensive performance (1.45 points per possession) against Howard was the most efficient of the Tom Crean era. So how was it done?

Start and end here: 30 out of the Hoosiers’ 35 field goals came via a dunk, layup (or close to one) or a 3-pointer (where they shot a strong 64.3 percent). The only five baskets not of this variety? Two Will Sheehey mid-range jumpers; a long two by Christian Watford  for Indiana’s first points of the game; a jumper each from Jordan Hulls and Remy Abell in the second half. Add in the Hoosiers’ 26 points from the line — many of which came on fouls by Howard as the Hoosiers were going up for dunks or layups — and it was a recipe for high efficiency.

Often, the Bison would either double-team/over help and not recover/hedge and not recover or switch on a screen, and Indiana would find the open man for easy buckets. There was also plenty of scoring in transition here, a staple of the Hoosiers’ offense so far this season.

The below video highlights these 30 field goals. Enjoy.

Will Sheehey suffers left lower leg injury

by in Media | December 22nd, 2011

From an IU Athletics release:

Sophomore Will Sheehey has a left lower leg injury that he sustained in practice Wednesday and his status will be evaluated each day.

With Sheehey likely out for Thursday’s game with UMBC, the Hoosiers will have just five scholarship bench players available — Austin Etherington, Daniel Moore, Matt Roth, Remy Abell and Tom Pritchard.

Derek Elston is also sidelined following surgery to repair a fracture in his nose.

Sheehey is averaging 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20 minutes per game.

Elston sidelined after surgery to repair nose fracture

by in Media | December 21st, 2011

When Indiana takes the court on Thursday night for its final game before Big Ten play, the Hoosiers will be without Derek Elston.

Indiana coach Tom Crean announced today that Elston had minor surgery on Tuesday to repair a fracture in his nose.

The injury was sustained via an inadvertant elbow in practice from sophomore Victor Oladipo.

“Derek Elston’s gonna miss tomorrow, because he had surgery on a fracture in his nose yesterday,” Crean told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. “He sustained it last week and was able to play on it. We decided to get it done yesterday, so he’ll miss tomorrow night, which will give us enough time to get better [before Michigan State].

“We certainly don’t anticipate anything more than just a couple of games with him.”

The junior forward from Tipton, Ind. is averaging 5.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game.

Film Session: Zeller’s first half against Notre Dame

by in Film Session | December 21st, 2011

Indiana only shot 34.4 percent from the field in the first half against Notre Dame. But thanks to 14 first-half points (6-of-10 shooting) and an assist from Cody Zeller, the Hoosiers were able to take a 26-20 lead into the break.

A look at three of his plays in the latest edition of Film Session:
