Pick to Click: Michigan State

by in Pick to Click | December 28th, 2011

For those unfamiliar with the Pick to Click, you can read the ground rules and how it all works at this link.

This year’s contest will include all eighteen Big Ten games and a prize ($100 gift certificate to Amazon.com) will be awarded to the overall winner.

As was the case last season, rather than giving free reign on who you’re able to pick, we’re instituting a pool system. Each game, there will be a pool of players to select from. This is being done to prevent picking the same player each game, which became a problem in previous seasons.

Pool for Michigan State: Christian Watford, Cody Zeller, Jordan Hulls, Remy Abell, Verdell Jones, Victor Oladipo

A few other things to remember:

Please make sure you are using a valid e-mail address if you are not registered.
Please make sure you are using the same name each time to pick if you are not registered. Once the contest begins, we’ll be tracking wins by the name you use to submit your pick. If your name changes on a game-to-game basis, credit for your pick will be given to the name used to submit the pick.
Please state who you are picking as the first thing in your comment. We could potentially have a couple of hundred picks per game. It’s more difficult to keep track of everyone’s pick if it’s not the first thing in your comment.

Picks are due by 7:15 PM ET tonight. If you’re interested in helping us keep score in the contest, please drop us an email at insidethehall@gmail.com.

With Big Ten season upon us, a look at the numbers

by in Commentary | December 27th, 2011

Twelve non-conference games in the books. And twelve victories for Indiana.

With an assist from KenPom, here’s a look at where the Hoosiers’ strong start stacks up with their conference foes as the Big Ten season kicks off this evening:

OFFENSE

No team in the conference boasts a more efficient offense than the Hoosiers heading into Big Ten play. KenPom currently ranks them as the No. 7 offensive in the nation in terms of adjusted offensive efficiency (115.8), though Ohio State (11th, 114.3) and Wisconsin’s slow-tempo-look-for-the-best-shot offense (12th, 114.0) aren’t far behind. (Adjusted offensive efficiency is the number of points a team scores per 100 possessions, which KenPom adjusts for level of competition.) From there, Northwestern (20th), Michigan (30th), Michigan State (33rd), Minnesota (38th) and Purdue (40th) round out the top 40. Though Illinois has played somewhat well and has spent time in the Top 25, the Illini’s offense (108th) has held them back.

Indiana sports the second-highest eFG% (57.7, 6th in the nation) in the conference behind Michigan (58.2, fourth in the nation) and its 3-point percentage (45.9 percent) is tops in the conference and good for second in the nation. The Hoosiers’ free throw rate (FTA/FGA) of 50.5 also tops the conference.

As we’ve seen, the offense has been a multi-pronged attack: easy buckets in transition, efficient scoring from Cody Zeller down low, slashing and mid-range work from Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey, lots of free throws and deadly 3-point accuracy no matter what the situation. Add in an offensive rebounding percentage of 36.7 percent (57th in the nation) and Indiana is getting second-chance opportunities as well.

But conference play will test all this, as several Big Ten teams sport some of the best defenses in the country.

Crean, players talk Michigan State

by in Media | December 27th, 2011

Courtesy of IU Media Relations, here are selected quotes from Tom Crean, Jordan Hulls, Christian Watford, Remy Abell and Austin Etherington in anticipation of Indiana’s bout with the Spartans tomorrow night in East Lansing:

Tom Crean

On Playing Michigan State:

“They have three guys in the top 15 in offensive rebounds in the Big Ten. You have to be fast, quick, and hold your position. They move the ball through Draymond Green, but he also leads the team in assists.”

“The ball moves at a pretty high rate. When you watch them and where they are now as opposed to where they were the first two games of the season it is easy to see they are getting deeper and better.”

“We have to have a strong mindset which begins in practice. We have to block out and we have to be relentless in pursuing the basketball and knowing where our man is at all times. Our transition defense will have to be at its best.”

On starting the Big Ten:

“Our guys understand how challenging it is in the Big Ten and at Michigan State. We have to maintain the attention to detail that we have displayed all year in getting ready for opponents. We have played 12 games and found 12 different ways to win.”

On going to East Lansing:

“Every year is different and every team is different. I think our team knows that to win on the road in a hostile environment it has to execute and eliminate mistakes that leads to easy baskets which get the crowd into the game.”

“It will be nice to see some family and friends but our approach in this is more business than anything else.”
