Live Discussion: Indiana at Michigan State

  • Anonymous

According to Sheridan’s Odds Michigan State is favored by 6 points!!!!  We are still not getting respect. We are ranked higher, and although I don’t believe we should be favored, I think even odds or MS favored by 1 or 2 would be more accurate. A win tonight might be just the medicine to get that respect.

Do they take injuries into consideration?

  • Mop Lady

does anyone know how i can watch the game from overseas?  online perhaps?

It probably has something to do with Indiana being on the road and Indiana only winning once in the Breslin Center.

    ESPN 3 maybe?

  • Dbfelker

bigtenetwork.com will have the game on but you will have to pay for it.

Total lack of toughness caused this one. There are no silver linings in losses anymore people.

CTC has to find a way to get Zeller into the offense. I am tired of him setting high screen after high screen and never getting the ball back off the roll. And he has to make himself more available off the block—at the very least moving toward the pass and not backing away. Watford and him should be playing high/low at some p oint—anything to try something.

And how does the MSU guy get tripped (fouled) at the foul line, take two full steps, then put up a layup, and the basket counts?

I agree about losses not having a silver lining anymore.  We are not pushovers we are a legitimate threat and this was absolutley piss poor all around except Watford and Jones. A lot of blame is on CTC, very poor coaching once MSU started their run in the 2nd half

I take ZERO pleasure in Watford winning PICK TO CLICK…i am not currently trying to behead myself with the can opener…if that fails, I will drink every beer in my fridge. If that fails, I will just pass out a drunken mess and wake up with a hope-filled heart that OSU can be felled.

What happened 2 Cody, he didn’t have many stats in the game?

  • IUeconAlum

Jordan Hulls sucked like I have never seen him suck before. You should get negative points for picking him to be the best in this game.

  • randy

it looked good seeing them come back from an eighteen point deficit. that three additional steps continuation bucket by spartans was when it all went downhill for good…wow! can officials be fired for making blind calls like that? watford was impressive on the glass tonight…that’s a positive.

Alright…I have to get a few things of my chest.  The first has to do with CZ.  We have all said it the last 12 games…he has to get the ball more!!!  Jordy and VO do a horrible job and I mean a HORRIBLE job getting him the ball.  Our leading scorer shoots 6 times?  I know he was in foul trouble but still needs to get more attempts.  I also thought he should have played through some of those fouls instead of sitting on the bench.  Jordy…pass CZ the freaking ball!!

Ok secondly, Jordy Hulls.  He can’t play D, he cant pass, and he turns the ball over.

Thirdly, someone please tell elston he is a role player.

Watford played like a freaking man and VJ3 is the only guy that tries to find zeller.  CW and CZ need to play a high low game like augistine and cook at Illinois a few years back.

Praying for Will to get better.  I think VJ3 needs to move to point and Will start when he comes back.  Jordy beginning to look like Roth…a 3 point specialist.  Also Roth had some huge 3’s.

Ok I feel better.  Sorry about that.  Ok guys, get your crap together these next few days and beat OSU!!

  • randy

it was three additional steps…and i have no idea. that wouldn’t have even been considered continuation in an nba game. wow!

I just don’t understand why IU does not set more off the ball picks.  We have outstanding catch-and-shoot shooters like Roth, Watford and Hulls out there, and all we did, time and time again, is set a high on-the-ball pick with the other 3 guys standing around on the perimeter.  Roth could not get a shot off in the halfcourt offense.  MSU made a great run, but the real problem was that we could not score during that stretch, because our offense consisted of a pick and roll with 3 guys standing around outside.  Why not set some low picks getting the shooters to pop out on the wing?

What was that loud sucking sound that drowned out the announcers and crowd every time IU tried to run a half court offense? Except for the first 7 minutes of the second half when MSU was missing and IU was rebounding and running..this looked like the same ‘ol IU team from the past two years. No post presence, no viable half court offense and desperation shots as the clock ran down. Have to credit MSU’s stellar half court defense…Hoosiers lack the quickness/toughness to execute against that defense. I suspect we’ll see similiar performances on the road given IU’s total inability to get the ball in low. Even if they had ..Zeller was no match physically for Payne and Nix. If Cody doesn’t show he’s a threat facing the basket..he’s gonna eat a lot of leather. Throw in Hulls’ worst game of his career..and what you saw was what you got…a good ol butt kickin’. If we can go 1-2 in our first 3 games…it will be a blessing.

You echoed my sentiments …  Jordy is a liability on D vs the better teams, because their athleticism and length will always burn him.  And while he is unselfish, he is not a great passer …  tonight there were several times when CZ was wide open off of a pick and roll, but he didn’t get him the ball.  Either he doesn’t see him or he can’t get it over the defenders.  And the turnovers …  tongiht Jordy made some really costly turnovers.  VO, also, failed to get CZ the ball several times when it looked like there was a nice angle for it.
MSU started their huge late run when CZ was on the bench and I, too, thought to myself, “Forget the damn fouls, get CZ in there ….”   Pritchard and Elston just don’t cut it, defensively.   And frankly I just don’t get Elston; he’s strong, he runs well, he shoots it well, but he just hasn’t performed up to those abilities.
But give MSU credit, they really manhandled CZ, who often couldn’t make a move against them even when he did get the ball in the low post.  It’s the first time I felt CZ looked like a freshman, like the player I figured he’d be this year before the season started.  OK, so he’s human and IU is mortal, but they will recover …   well, maybe not next game, but the game after ….

Crean needs to teach them how to feed the post and Zeller needs to learn how to hold his ground and get the pass.  My God, it’s been 13 games and  I can count on 1 hand how many good post entry passes I have seen.

  • BEAT KENTUCKY

Crean had about 5 minutes of insane substituting . And part of that was Elston who in 45 seconds gave them the momentum and eventually the game . Very frustrating game . Hulls brought nothing and no one found Zeller .

  • Southport65

Ok take out Will’s 11.5 points a game, then have Hulls have his worst shooting night of his career. These were open 3’s he hits 60% of the time not forced shots. The kid is going to have an off game but he did have 5 assists. You can blame the guards but as a former coach Zeller is just learning how to play with his back to the basket and he is not a huge target for the guards to hit. He needs to step out and hit some face to the bucket shots and the entry passes will become easier. MSU were double teaming his right side to force him into the middle making the pass easier to be picked off plus he was getting mugged, pushed and shoved out of position. This will get better when he adds some weight. He has had his way for years against smaller defenders and he is a freshman who needs to learn. Even with all that we still show heart and we came back from 2 big margins. The last few years this game would be over midway thru the 1st half. We played a ranked team at home with one of our top scorers hurt in an arena where no one wins! We just got our 1st loss.. get over it,learn and move on. This team was not picked to win this game this year. It will be different when they come to IU. We hold most of our home games win the easy road games and we are in the dance. It is terrible of all who are saying coach must go or Hulls should be benched after one loss. We did not lose to Penn State or Iowa so get over our 1st loss to a good team and get ready for Ohio State and even if we lose that one the season and 20 wins are still within our reach along with an NCAA bid which most of you so called arm chair coaches did not think was possible until next year. What a knee jerk reaction from fans who know better!!
I am so sad about how some of you have reacted. Step back and let the team lean from their mistakes. For the record IZZO out coaches nearly everyone he plays in East Lansing!!

IU Wolf!! I hear you. You echoed my thoughts. I was at Nick’s watching the game and you hit all the main points. Hulls is exposed. Jones must move to point. He played his best game tonight. Looked like a leader. When he was out, MSU made its run. Elston should not see the floor again this season, except for garbage time. His mistakes really foiled the team. Period. He was horrible. Looked out of his league. And Hulls. He can’t run an offense — or defend the elite of the Big Ten. I think the problem with getting the ball into the post is the guard play. Hulls failed big time tonight… He couldn’t guard Teague of Kentucky either. He is a role player next year, shooter of the bench….

As for Zeller, he needs to get stronger. But IU needs to get him some help in the paint. He needs another banger down there with him, like Michigan State has — and unfortunately, so does Ohio State.By far the best player on the floor for IU is Watford. He’s a gamer and this team’s offense flows better when he plays his inside-out game. Roth made a key contribution during that first run….  BUt IU can’t afford to ever fall down by 18 points. That they came back on the road shows they are an improved team with heart. I love the effort. But heck with moral victories. There are none.

Good, I got that off my chest.

Hope the Hall is rockin on Saturday. I can’t wait to be there!!
