Q & A: Trey Lyles after Tech-Pike scrimmage

by in Recruiting | November 18th, 2011

Inside the Hall caught up with 2014 IU commitment and Arsenal Tech forward Trey Lyles on Thursday evening after the Titans’ scrimmage at Indianapolis Pike. Indiana coach Tom Crean was in attendance.

A transcript of our conversation with the five-star forward follows:

Inside the Hall: Talk about how it feels to get back out here on the court playing competitive basketball.

Trey Lyles: It’s good getting back out here with the guys. We’re going hard every day in practice, really getting ready for the games and everything leading into sectional. Hopefully we’ll get a sectional championship this year.

ITH: What did you see on the court tonight from yourself and from your team?

TL: Just everybody playing hard. Everybody playing clean basketball and everybody trying to understand what’s going on and getting to know everybody’s games.

ITH: What are some things that Tech as a team and you personally would like to improve on these next couple of days before the season starts?

TL: Everybody just getting more vocal on the court. All of us being able to talk and communicate.

ITH: What have you been doing personally from AAU until now to get ready for the season?

TL: Mainly lifting weights and hitting the gym. I’m getting a lot of shots up, trying to improve my whole game and get stronger.

Podcast on the Brink: Episode 2

by in Podcast on the Brink | November 17th, 2011

Podcast On The Brink is back with its second episode and features a visit from an old friend — Chris Korman.

The former Herald-Times sports editor and IU beat writer joins Matt Dollinger and Greg Rosenstein and discusses the team he covered for four years in Bloomington. The three also talk about IU’s 3-0 start and last night’s 94-73 victory over Evansville.

In addition, Korman — who is now an editor at The Baltimore Sun — talks about his memories on the beat, compares what it was like to deal with Kelvin Sampson and Tom Crean and reflects about the stories he never got a chance to tell while covering the Hoosiers.

So tune in this week and enjoy. Feel free to drop us a note at podcastonthebrink@gmail.com.

Evansville Notebook: Road woes in the past, Watford heats up, more

by in Media | November 17th, 2011

Notes, quotes and observations from Wednesday night’s 94-73 win over Evansville:

Verdell Jones has lived through the past three seasons of Indiana’s struggles to win away from Assembly Hall.

So perhaps it was no surprise when the senior guard, who scored 17 points and handed out seven assists, had already put those memories to bed after Indiana’s dominant performance in the Ford Center.

“We’re 1-0 this year on the road,” Jones said. “That’s in the past. We’re going from here on out in the future.”

SETTING THE TONE

Unlike the Stony Brook and Chattanooga contests that were close for portions of the first half, the Hoosiers left no doubt on the outcome from the tip off on Wednesday.

Cody Zeller credited the quick start, which included an 11-2 run to begin the game, to a solid week of practice and preparation.

“We had a good week of practice,” he said. “I think the preparation we had was a big key. We came out ready to play and that was what got us off to a good start.”

The Minute After: Evansville

by in The Minute After | November 16th, 2011

Thoughts on a 94-73 road win over the Purple Aces:

SO MUCH FOR THAT

They said the Purple Aces would test the Hoosiers. They said this could be Indiana’s first loss. After all, Tom Crean’s crew hadn’t won on the road in its last 17 attempts. And these Purple Aces were coming off a win over Butler.

They were wrong.

Indiana got off to a strong start from the opening tip on Wednesday night inside the Ford Center and never looked back. In the first 20 minutes, Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey shut down Colt Ryan. Christian Watford, Verdell Jones, Jordan Hulls and Cody Zeller did the scoring. By half, they were up by 24. And though the second half wasn’t as crisp and got sloppy at times, the Hoosiers finished the night with a 21-point victory.

This team played with confidence. With hunger. With a chip on it shoulder. With strong shooting (65.3 eFG%), ball sharing (24 assists on 33 baskets) and defense. Three wins. Zero losses. On to the next one.

THERE’S CHRISTIAN

Watford failed to shoot well in Indiana’s first two games coming off injury, but Crean told the media after Sunday’s Chattanooga game he wasn’t worried.

And tonight, he came through for his coach. Watford got into the action early with two scores around the rim and also hit a couple threes. For the evening, the Alabama native finished with 15 points (5-of-7, 2-of-3 from three) and eight boards.

Another game, another guy stepping up and shooting lights out for the Hoosiers.

III

Jones hasn’t gotten enough love in this space. But he’s a big reason why the Hoosiers’ offense has looked strong this season. He’s not forcing the issue or doing more than he has to. And he’s finding the open man time and again. The senior dished out a team-high seven assists tonight to go along with a team-high 17 points, which was aided by a perfect 4-of-4 mark from beyond the arc.
