Crean, Elston and Zeller talk Butler

by in Media | November 26th, 2011

Indiana media relations issued the following quotes earlier today from Tom Crean, Derek Elston and Cody Zeller as the Hoosiers prepare for a Sunday night meeting with Butler at Assembly Hall:

Crean

On the tournament (Hoosier Invitational) and scheduling:

“We saw this as an opportunity to get four home games. We have to play so many home games every year because the department is dependant on the revenue.

“We really look at scheduling on a year to year basis and we already have the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Kentucky series, and the Crossroads Classic for next year, so we have to look for an exempt tournament and home games each year moving forward.”

On whether Andrew Smith will be the best post player Cody has had to face thus far:

“Andrew Smith presents a number of challenges and as a team we have to do a good job of not letting him get comfortable.”

On what concerns he has about Butler:

“Their veteran guys have experienced winning at the highest level and have done a great job of transferring their experiences to their younger players. They play very well together. They execute their offense and they cut hard. Defensively, they will get into you and make you work for everything you get.”

What to Expect: Butler

by in Opponents | November 26th, 2011

Indiana looks for its second consecutive 6-0 start on Sunday night when Butler visits Assembly Hall for the first meeting between the two programs since 2006.

Here’s a look at what to expect from the Bulldogs, who are 3-2 with losses to Evansville and Louisville:

Fresh off two consecutive appearances in the national championship game, it appears to be a rebuilding year at Butler. Brad Stevens’ club has already suffered its worse home loss since 1992 and a narrow overtime defeat at the Ford Center in Evansville.

Last season many wondered if the program could rebound from the early departure of Gordon Hayward to the NBA Draft. Butler responded with another improbable run to the title game. This season the losses of Shelvin Mack to the NBA and Matt Howard to graduation will be more difficult to overcome.

COMMON OPPONENTS

Thanks to the Hoosier Invitational and games at Evansville, both teams share four common opponents through five games:

None of these scores will matter once tip-off arrives on Sunday night, but Indiana dominated all four games while Butler fell at Evansville and trailed to Savannah State and Gardner-Webb at halftime.

Film Session: Sheehey’s 10 straight

by in Film Session | November 23rd, 2011

Between the 11:09 and 9:21 mark in the second half of Indiana’s win over Garnder-Webb, Will Sheehey scored 10 straight points for the Hoosiers.

“They were all in the flow of the game; they were all from great passes,” said the sophomore after the win.

A fitting line for Indiana’s offense through five games.

A deeper look at Sheehey’s buckets in the latest edition of Film Session.

1) DUNK

Cody Zeller gets the ball in the corner and passes to a cutting-under-the-basket Victor Oladipo:

Double-teamed, Oladipo throws a nifty pass to Sheehey:

Podcast on The Brink: Thanksgiving Edition

by in Podcast on the Brink | November 23rd, 2011

In the spirit of the holiday season, Podcast On The Brink is bringing you a special Thanksgiving edition today to help you get through a weekend with the in-laws.

Matt Dollinger and Greg Rosenstein welcome Herald-Times beat writer Dustin Dopirak to the show to discuss the Hoosiers’ hot start and their much-anticipated showdown with Butler on Sunday.

The three also talk about IU’s newfound leaders, Victor Oladipo’s staggering improvement and whether or not the Hoosiers are a deep team.

In addition, Matt and Greg call ChronicHoosier to find out what IU fans should be thankful for this Thanksgiving (hint: Tijan). Chronic also gives his two cents on Cody Zeller’s emergence, Tom Pritchard’s fallout and whether or not an IU fan should every marry a Purdue graduate.

So tune in this week and enjoy. Also, feel free to drop us a note (and/or Turkey leftovers) at podcastonthebrink@gmail.com.

Yahoo! Sports: Ten impressive college hoops starts

I’m impressed by Indiana. The Hoosiers haven’t played anybody, but in the last few years that still didn’t guarantee victory. This season they’re 5-0 with five dominant victories. Along the way they’re second nationally in 2-point field-goal percentage (61.2 percent).

Freshman Cody Zeller has been sensational without trying to do too much, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks. He’s shooting 80 percent from the field, and the last game against Gardner-Webb was the first time he missed more than one shot in a game. The challenges will come soon enough: between Nov. 27 and Dec. 17, Indiana plays Butler, North Carolina State, Kentucky and Notre Dame.
