The Minute After: Butler

by in The Minute After | November 27th, 2011

Thoughts on a 75-59 win over the Bulldogs:

This one meant something.

From the tip, all these Indiana boys fighting for bragging rights got after it. They scraped and clawed and sacrificed their bodies. And well: They turned the ball over and fouled and shot poorly at times, too. Some called it ugly. Others called it a thing of beauty.

Whatever your frame of reference, this one did not always look like a double-digit victory for the Hoosiers. Butler was far and away the most fundamentally sound defensive team Indiana faced this season. And even when the Hoosiers were getting good looks, they failed to knock them down.

Maybe it was nerves, the known symbolic importance of beating the state’s new darling and reclaiming some pride for IU.

The Hoosiers only hit 20 percent of their shots from inside the arc in the first half, but were able to go into the locker room up three points thanks to some hot shooting from 3-point distance (5-of-10).

At times, it felt like the Hoosiers were about to break through. But Butler responded on each occasion, until the 10:13 mark in the second half.

Tom Pritchard — who was effective on the defensive end in nine minutes of action — dove to the floor for a steal. Jordan Hulls pushed it up the court and kicked it to Christian Watford. (The Alabama native forced a bit too much action at times tonight in a poor shooting effort — 2-of-10). He found Hulls curling around him to the hoop for a finger-roll lay-in.

Defense into offense once again for these Hoosiers.

Speaking of defense, Indiana’s intensity on that end was key tonight. It forced Butler — a team known for taking care of the ball — to cough it up 21 times. The Hoosiers recorded 14 steals. They held Butler to just 38.2 percent from the floor and 27.8 percent from 3-point range.

There were other factors, too. Indiana’s free-throw rate (76.6) helped, as they hit 29-of-36 for the evening. Will Sheehey continues to take his game to the next level, recording a career-high 21 points. Cody Zeller was steady with 16 and eight. (Though, he showed some frustration, was outmuscled at times and even tossed up an air ball.)

Through five bouts, the Hoosiers made it look so easy. Tonight, it wasn’t always so. But this team continues to show confidence, togetherness and a sense of purpose.

On this night inside Assembly Hall, the statement was made loud and clear: Indiana’s on the rise.

THE WEEK AHEAD

This dogfight was a solid training session for the Hoosiers before they take on North Carolina State on Wednesday night in Raleigh, North Carolina — a game which appears to be shaping up as Indiana’s toughest test of the season to date.

A week from today they’ll take on Stetson at home.

But for now, they remain 6-0 — all victories coming by 15 points or more.

I agree with your points here MillaRed.  If our guards and wings could learn how to pass it to a wide open 6’11″ stud we will be even better.  We are shooting 3′s at an outstanding % which will only get better the more we feed the Z.

Milla, VJIII was downright horrific last night. He is a yo-yo.  Hulls is consistent even when he doesn’t score.  I think VJIII can be good, but I would rather have the consistentcy.  VJIII looked weak all night long on rebounding, D, ball handling, offense etc.  Hulls struggles on D but his is more the issue of not being tall enough to alter shots, but never effort, heart or leadership.

This team was at its best last night with JH, VO, WS, DE, and CZ on the floor.  Even though DE didn’t do much offensively, he was unselfish.  CW and VJIII are selfish.

  • stonaroni

That is not his style.  He will not dress down an official nor is he going to get a tech to motivate the team.  He preaches respect to these players and they have to call the official Mr. Hightower, not Ed.

  • Anonymous

I think the NC State game would be a step in the right direction unless we beat them handily, then we can start thinking about a tournament bid.  I still believe we have to make some noise in B1G conference play before thinking about dancing…

  • SIHoosierfan

VJ scares me period. He tends to play like a Bull in a China shop. 3 defenders on him and he will try to bust thru them and turn it over or com close to. You can also see him  more often then not losing his guy on defense. Numerous time we saw him looking around for his man especially when his man cut underneath rim. He also gives his man to much space a lot of the time and also tends to leave his man open on the 3 still when someone drives.

  • stonaroni

Are you serious?  A pretty good game?  This is D-I  Big 10 basketball, at 6’8″ you have to finsih the shots at point blank range.  CW has been weak, and I mean soft in the paint since he got here.

CW played average D tonight which I believe was the best part of his game against Butler.

And, I am extremely worried about the selfish play that CW exhibits, many players are open when he shoots from 20′ or whne he is bricking shots from 20″.

  • stonaroni

The reason WS is so great off the bench is because he has a great energy and tenacity he brings for a spark.  Also, VJIII is either good or bad and VO has been getting into foul trouble.  WS can come in for VJII and slide to the 3 or he can come in for VJIII, play the 3 and slide VO to the 2.  It gives CTC options and WS can play the 2 or 4 in certain line ups, he is our most effectively flexible player on our team.

I love what CTC is doing with him and it is working 15 pts, 15 pts and 21 pts last 3 games.  Remember WS was sick with flu like symptoms game 2 and game 3.

  • MillaRed

I agree. It was necessary and epitomized what Watford was doing out there last night.

Gotta admit, on the next FT miss, the Butler player literally bear hugged Watford and bull rushed him under the basket without a foul call. It was ridiculous.

  • MillaRed

    Amen brother

  • MillaRed

And my point is to let Jordy play the PG position he has played since he was 5 years old. With his head up to boot.

  • stonaroni

He is playing poorly thus far.  He has not improved much in the paint if any since he got here.

DE, WS, VO have improved and now CZ is here.  All are playing better than CW and deserving more minutes than him.

Some fans need to realize that this team has a versatility that we haven’t seen under CTC and we do not need high screens for VJIII with 7 seconds left on the shot clock or CW chucking up garbage because no one else on the team can score.  We have a lot of options, CW isn’t a feasible one right now and if he doesn’t play better, he needs to accept his role.

  • MillaRed

Wondering if Will and Cody are not neck and neck for the best players on the team. If such is the case, Will needs to start IMHO. But I understand what we are doing is working.

  • MillaRed

Hmmm, when I watched it again last night it looked like he was mopping the floor with his knees. But I could be wrong.

  • stonaroni

I normally beat up Roth, but he was a glue guy last night scrapping on the floor for loose balls, nailing a 3 and giving us good minutes that Danny Moore seems to have lost.

I think NC St will be a good test and if CTC has to make an example out of VJIII or CW for selfish play Wednesday night and we lose by 1, 15 or 30, I 100% fully support it.  These 2 guys need to wake up.

  • stonaroni

When VJIII got stripped and then flailed and flopped like a bird caught in the jaws of a predator I thought to myself, “Your Mind is weak”.

Any one else around here sick of the pouting and scowls and stares at the officials when VJIII committs a foul or TO?  Some of these guys need to grow up.  CTC needs to nip this as soon as possible.

  • cooper

Great win. At this point, Butler is not a very good team and IU did just what they should have in burying Butler.

I continue to be very impressed by the improvement in Sheehey and Pritchard played very well on D. One of the first games I’ve seen Watford make some nice passes and stay in the game besides a poor offensive performance.
Elston still plays like Captain Caveman and has to get himself under control.

A little surprised to see Moore playing over Abell. Also surprised to see Roth get all the minutes over Etherington. With Etherington being a frosh and having the same type of skills as Roth i thought he may take some of Roths minutes

PG defense and rebounding still needs to improve but this was a great start to this 5 game swing. If IU can win 2 of the next 4 I think they have an outside shot at the tournament.

Maybe most important was IU winning a game and winning easily when not playing their best.

Finally, I thought Crean did a great job making adjustments at half time and using the bench

  • Anonymous

I was encouraged by a few things he did—I was thrilled to see him attack the basket and try to dunk in that guy’s face.  He didn’t hit it but he drew the foul.

  • Anonymous

I saw that and even hit rewind to show my wife because she wondered what I was complaining about.

  • WALT

Re: CW and VJ111, am sorry to say this, but at least at this point in the season, should they be watching and observing things from the bench.  Again, this is one game, but neither appeared to belong on the same floor with the rest of the Hoosiers. Either they get focused or bring in AE and RA more. IMO

  • SirEric

I agree with you. This was Verdell’s first bad game and I still don’t like him at PG, but I am not going to write him off just yet. Everyone seems to be really down on CWat who I thought has been making strides up to this game. The fact is, he is a go to guy that can create his own shot. The ball just wasn’t rolling his way last night. They will start falling. We need CWat and need him to play well to be a viable tourney team IMO. Everyone will change their tune once he starts putting up numbers again. I am not worried.

  • Anonymous

you are right on WALT. VJ and WAT still want to play for themselves instead of letting the game come to them and think TEAM first, they can help us win games if they embrace a role on this team and play defense. can’t wait 4 NC State!! go HOOSIERS!!!!

  • Anonymous

I wonder if part of Will not starting is because he’s so versatile.  He came in for Watford about 1:30 into the game, but generally goes to the wing.  It almost seems as if he’s the first sub just because Crean is waiting to see where he needs him most.

  • Anonymous

I only remember two blown calls off the top of my head, and one went each way.  Watford got shoved out of bounds on a free throw and Butler got the rebound (but didn’t score,) and the other was Hulls’ driving lay-up that triggered the run that put the game away—he took a little pass/hand off from Watford and traveled on his way to the basket but it wasn’t called.

  • Anonymous

Agree with him needing to become stronger. I believe he needs to step out and shoot more often. Although he shot an airball, he can really shoot it. We have yet to see him stretch the defense with a mid range/three pointer. I think that this can create opportunities around the basket and make us that much more versatile and dangerous offensively. He’s gonna be a Naismith winner by his senior year. Think Tyler hansbrough with a better skill set and just as much killer in him.

  • stonaroni

Yes I saw this too, but CW cannot allow himself to get pushed around.  It should have been an offensive foul.

  • stonaroni

I am going to guess that this is the rotation CTC likes, but there is no way he can deny WS time on the floor if he continues his high offensive efficiency.  He is good for 13 ppg in 20 minutes.

  • stonaroni

Roth played well last night though I do feel AE and RA needs minutes.  Both could have played and we still would have won.

I got sick to my stomach last night to see Moore in our rotation, that cannot happen when there are 2 abled Big 10 bodies on the bench;  Moore is 5’7″ and no where near a Mugsy Bogues or Nic Moore from Warsaw that CTC didn’t recruit.

  • N71

Agree, play Will as much as possible and VJ3 as little as possible.  Can’t help but look to next year.

PG - covered very nicely by Hulls and Yogi
SG – covered nicely by VO and Ron Patterson
SF – covered well by Will and Jeremy
PF – covered well by Hanner and DE
C – covered well be CZ and Peter

When someone gasses out you don’t loose a beat for the most part.  If CWat can shake the funk great, if not things are covered.

  • So_Cal_Hoosier

I think that people are frustrated by seeing the same mistakes VJ and CWat are making again and again. They are D-1 athletes and play in front of 17,000+ crowd every game, when they don’t play up to their potential as upperclassmen there is going to be criticism.

On the flip side, look at Pritch. People have been “hating” on him in the past, but look at all of the posts on him today… Nothing but praise.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I agree that the best lineup was with JH, VO, WS, DE, and CZ out there but not much was lost when MR and TP were in the game at times.  That makes me happy because even if CW and VJ aren’t contributing, there’s still some depth.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I know Stonaroni, but it’s my style!!!  LOL – I would never last as a basketball coach because I’d be thrown out halfway through the first half every other game.  Heck, I’ve been tossed out of a few baseball games and it’s a relatively easy sport to officiate!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I disagree about CWat being the ‘go to guy that can create his own shot’.  He actually had a ton of shots blocked last year in that role because he can’t elevate to get the ball over big defenders and isn’t quick enough to go around smaller ones.  I think he’s better as a receiver of the DD offense.  If Jordan, Will, Vic, or even Jones (if he would dribble with his head up) beat their man, they could kick to him inside or out and he would be a good option (if he learns to finish inside).

Otherwise, Will is the best go to option to create his own shot right now.

Also, for those who were impressed with VJ3′s desire to feed CZ on the post last week, just look at the possession where Zeller was WIDE open and throwing his hand in the air while VJ3 dribbled at the top of the key with his head down.  He needs to correct that or he’ll miss more opportunities like that.  I know from experience (as a young PG growing into a pretty good HS PG) that you CAN learn to dribble with your head up if you work at it.  Get the kid some blinders that keep his eyes up and force him to learn to dribble while scanning the floor!!!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Oh, and I’m not saying you were one claiming that last week.  I just thought it was a good time to throw that in there.

    Sorry

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Okay, then start Roth instead of VJ3.  At least we could get some kick out open threes and maybe stretch the D a bit!  Then bring in Will for energy.  Let’s face it, VJ3 isn’t playing with much more energy and intensity than Roth anyway.  I’m not even a big Roth fan.  I just think he brings more to the table right now until VJ picks up his consistency.  At least Roth is a consistently a threat to hit from outside and teams have to stretch it out a bit.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I completely agree!  Exactly correct.  They hedged and doubled the guy with the ball and our ball handlers never made the adjustment.  I’m sure that’s something CTC and the staff will recognize and work on this week in practice.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I agree.  Hulls needs to be more aggressive and split it a couple times to pick up fouls or something so teams will have to back off this strategy!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be sacrificing a win if CTC benched VJ3 & CWAT the way they’re playing now . . . it would be playing to win.  I hope he addresses their play from last night before the NC State game because I really think this team needs the upperclassmen leadership, especially from Watford.  It’s not that I hate VJ3 or anything like that!  I just think he’s replaceable while Watford is not.  IU needs the size but they have plenty of good options on the wing.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Um, according to the box score, IU shot 29-36 from the FT line.  That’s pretty darn good.  I don’t think there’s much room for improvement there, unless the box is wrong!  Nope, ESPN box score says the same.  I was thrilled with their FT rate and % last night.

    Everything else . . . right on!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I’ll give you 1 of 2.  I think we do need CWat to play well because of his size and the match up problems he can create.  However, I do not think we need VJ3 to get big minutes to compete in the Big Ten because there are a lot of other options.  Will, Vic, and even Roth outplayed him last night and have shown they can contribute.  I even think that AE will end up being a contributor because he has a quick first step on defense.  He just needs to learn the system and adjust offensively to the speed of the game.

So, I’ll concede that IU needs Watford to accept a role and play well but I won’t accept that we need to see 25+ minutes of VJ3 to be successful.  I still think our more athletic wing players will be more successful against better B1G teams anyway.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I agree.  Butler forces their style of play on teams, just like they did to UConn last season in the championship game.  If they had just shot 25-30% they would have won that game.  They are good at playing their style and IU showed maturity and grit last night in responding and playing more of their own style in the second half.

  • Plane1972

Not to split hairs, but he did get that lay-up because of a nice bit of defensive anticipation. Just sayin’.

  • cooper

Exactly, it just doesn’t make sense. You have two frosh who need playing time to be ready to contribute for the next four years. I respect Moore plays hard but he shouldn’t be in the rotation. Plus with the trouble IU has defending the PG position wouldn’t it make sense to get Abell in the game?

With some of the better teams and athletes IU is going to face Abell needs to get his feet wet. Regarding AE I want to see what he is capable of and whether he can shoot and what kind of D he can play. If he can shoot to a level similar of Roth and defend he deserves minutes

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I don’t think he played selfishly—he didn’t play well but I don’t think he was overly selfish.  He’s a good three-point shooter and none of them I recall were really contested.  He needs to hit the lay-ups he missed but he should have taken them.  At 6’9″  you should be thinking “Dunk” any time you’re within 5 feet of the basket–won’t always happen but you should be thinking about how to get in position to do it, and I think that one attempt was the first time I’ve seen it from Watford in traffic.

  • Anonymous

I was pretty livid when he blew it but then I thought about there being 2.9 on the clock and considered that maybe he rushed it to get the ball out of his hand before the buzzer sounded.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think he denied him playing time as he was in the game like 31 minutes.  That being said, I think I’d like to see him get about 45 minutes a game (that would require cloning him, but I’m all for that if he keeps playing this way.)

  • Anonymous

Up until last night Jones has been much improved on defense so he has grown some.  I don’t know that I’d prefer Roth over him much of the time.

  • Anonymous

I’d not leave Ethrington out of the mix for next season, either

  • Anonymous

He put 45 on North Harrison in the regional and DID beat them by himself.

  • Anonymous

Aceman, I respectfully disagree with you about VJIII.  He has been around the block a few times in the B1G.  Although, I get extremely frustrated sometimes with his erratic play I believe he still plays a key role on this team.  I was surprised with him getting in CWat’s face last night and trying to get him into the game.  We need everyone to get fired up and hold each other responsible on the team.

I thought VJIII had learned his role and accepted it early in the season but I think him and CWat need a talking to after this game.  The offense could benefit a lot if VJIII would jump on board.  First and foremost we need to get CZ the ball inside.  VJIII has had some good passes down low this season, but is extremely careless with the ball at other times.  Once the inside is established shooters will be open.  As we saw last night WS hit some open threes and then once the defense was running out on him he made some great one-dribble jump shots.  VJIII can also do this within the offense.  Although his D in past seasons left a lot to be desired he has stepped it up this year.

I definitely do not know this for a fact and I hope I am wrong but sometimes when you are rebuilding a team you have guys who like the environment in which they have a longer leash and can take shots and “get theirs”.  I think if these guys can learn to play within the team concept and accept their roles they can still “get theirs” and we can win a lot of games.

  • Kelin Blab

First I have been without technology for 48hrs…yuck…
+ I thought IU out toughed butler and won based on that
+ I go back to the firepower…IU has alot of it and it showed up in the form of Will Sheehey Sunday
+ It will be interesting to see this team clicking on all cylinders with feeding the post, watford, and VJ3 finding their spots, and our bench continuing to be strong.
+ We are on a collision course for #1 Kentucky to come in here undefeated and wouldn’t that be nice?

If I had a nickel for every time I said, “you’re 6’9″ and weigh 235, just dunk the damn thing”, during the Butler game I wouldn’t have to……….
