CSN Chicago: Indiana’s Crean goes above and beyond

Today, I received a call about Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean who is considered to be one of the better young coaches in the game and also one of the most focused and intense. The caller told me the story of a young man who is a freshman at Indiana and was finding his adjustment to college a difficult one. Crean saw the young man sitting in the lobby of the basketball practice facility recently and noticed him a couple of times as he went in and out of the basketball offices. He also noticed that the young man appeared to be very upset.

Crean invited the student into his office and proceeded to hear his story and counseled the young man on how difficult the transition to college can be and encouraged him to stick with it. He also introduced the student to the rest of his staff and he got him an opportunity to work around the basketball program as a member of the athletic department.

The young man had turned off his cell phone after telling his parents that he needed to take a walk and think and his parents were very worried when they were unable to reach him. When Crean inquired as to whether the young man had spoken with his parents recently the young man said no. Crean called the parents, gave them his personal contact information and told them he would look out for their son. After arranging for a job in the athletic department the young man is reported to be doing very well and has adjusted to life away from home.

Willis hearing from IU, taking wait and see approach

by in Recruiting | September 7th, 2011

Friday marks the beginning of a contact period for college coaches and just southeast of Louisville at Bullitt East, it could bring into focus the schools who will pursue former Purdue commitment Derek Willis.

The 6-foot-9, 210 pound forward re-opened the recruiting process in early August and according to his father, Del, he’s currently focused on preparing for his junior season of high school.

“He’s got a routine where he’s lifting weights, shooting ball every day,” Del Willis told Inside the Hall. “He’s trying to get focused and get ready for his season right now and just kind of see how the recruiting pans out as the season goes on.”

Willis, the No. 42 player nationally in the 2013 class according to ESPN.com, has already taken unofficial visits to Louisville and Kentucky in the last month

He’s also hearing from Indiana, but has not yet landed a scholarship offer from any school.

“Right now, Derek doesn’t have any offers from anybody,” his father said. “Of course the offer from Purdue was taken off the table. And that was the only offer he had. In our eyes, it was kind of a gamble for him to back off his commitment like that.”

Indiana, which already has a pair of commitments in the 2013 class, is expected to make a strong push for Willis in the coming months. The Hoosiers were in contact as recently as a week and a half ago.

The Hoosiers will play seven Big Ten games on ESPN or CBS and will open the Big Ten season on the Big Ten Network in East Lansing against Michigan State on Wednesday, December 28. Trevon Bluiett recaps Saturday visit to Bloomington

by in Recruiting | September 6th, 2011

Indiana’s football season opened on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium, but in the hours before kickoff back in Bloomington the basketball coaching staff was busy hosting a prospect near the top of the program’s wish list for the 2014 class.

Trevon Bluiett, who helped lead Park Tudor to a state championship last spring, took an unofficial trip to the IU campus and came away impressed.

“It went real well, really well,” Bluiett told Inside the Hall on Tuesday. “We went up there Saturday evening. All of the coaches were there. We just sat around the conference table and he (Coach Crean) was just telling me how important it was to get me to come to Indiana and how important I am.”

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward, who led all scorers with 21 points in the Class 2A title game as a freshman, said he was appreciative of the staff’s message during his visit.

“I just thought that felt good that even though they have a lot of commits, how they still care for me to come there,” he said. “That meant a lot.”

Indiana was the first school to offer Bluiett a scholarship last September and the Hoosiers already hold commitments from a pair of his Spiece Indy Heat AAU teammates, James Blackmon Jr. and Trey Lyles.

The Park Tudor sophomore said he keeps in regular contact with Lyles and added that he could see himself playing with both guys in college.
