Louisville Courier-Journal: Derek Willis lands Indiana offer

Bullitt East coach Troy Barr said the 6-foot-9 Willis already had an offer from Louisville and on Wednesday landed an offer from Indiana coach Tom Crean.

Crean and assistant coaches Steve McClain and Tim Buckley watched Willis for a couple of hours in open gym and in the weight room.

U of L coach Rick Pitino and assistant coach Kevin Keatts watched Willis in open gym on Friday.

Barr said Willis has been invited to Indiana’s Hoosier Hysteria (Oct. 15) and Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness (Oct. 14). He’s also heard several times from Stanford and Georgetown, while Florida State and Oklahoma State have made contact.

Do we know why he decommited from PU? And why is PU still in his top five now (according to the article)?

The plot thickens. This kid is a nice player, the 2013 could be even better. Given he does not mind leaving the state of Kentucky, I think our chances are good.

Good to see the attention towards talented bigs.  Crean is known for the guards he has had, not so much the bigs.  Cody Zeller seems to have changed that a bit before even playing a game.  Not to get to far ahead of myself, but I think there is a slight impact already showing… whether that’s opening Crean and staff’s minds or opening recruits minds.

  • He committed to Purdue after an unofficial visit when Painter first offered him a scholarship. He supposedly had his dad pull the car over so he could call Painter and accept. This was before the summer AAU season, when Willis blew up: he played great, had a fantastic set of games and shot up the rankings. To hear his dad tell it, it seems like he caught a lot of grief for going out of state without really giving UK and UL much of a look (he lives right outside of Louisville). Thinking he had accepted too soon, he decommitted and said he wanted to look at other schools and was interested in UK and UL (teams he visited less than a week after the announcement); he said would also give IU a look as well. The whole situation has been analyzed pretty in depth by most Purdue blogs (including my own, shameless plug, I know). In my opinion, his top 2 are UK and UL, then it’s every body else (although IU might be up there in the #3 spot since Crean has been following him for a while). Purdue is still listed in his top five because his dad said that he still has a high interest in Purdue, but I don’t think Painter is actively recruiting him any more (and I don’t anticipate that changing; I think Painter’s moving on). I don’t anticipate him committing any time soon, given how the Purdue thing played out.

All Kentucky jokes aside—Stanford does not recruit fools, so this kid must be pretty sharp, too.

I hope you’re right.  We could really use this kid although I’m not a very big fan of anyone who de-commits unless it is because of coaching change or some other violation or something.  People who de-commit “just because” may just do it again and again like a few others we have seen.  We have a ton of verbals at IU right now and I’d hate to see any of them de-commit “just because”.

I’d agree with you if it didn’t involve a minor. High school kids are fickle and make decisions based on emotion sometimes (except me – I never did that). While it’s not a preferred M.O., I wouldn’t hold it against him too much unless it becomes a trend (see: Chandler).

The fact that he committed to PU on the drive home shows me that it was an impulse move by a young kid who didn’t know his full potential yet.  Its the same reason car salesman don’t want you to walk off the lot, you lose that impulse buy.  Once he sat back and thought about it he realized PU was not for him, he could do better, like IU.

If I remember correctly Hartman and Davis decided to commit to IU in a car after visiting IU.

It isn’t easy to get into Kentucky either Marcus. You have to stand on your own two feet, use a pencil, tie your own shoes and many other crazy standards.
