Indiana now recruiting top 2013 big man Julius Randle

by in Recruiting | September 14th, 2011

Multiple outlets, including our friend Zach Osterman over at Inside Indiana (premium), reported Tuesday that Indiana had a presence at the open gym of Julius Randle, a top five prospect nationally in the class of 2013.

Bennie Seltzer was indeed among the large contingent of college coaches checking out Randle in Plano, Texas yesterday.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound power forward is an AAU teammate of Matt Jones, who was recently offered a scholarship by the Hoosiers.

Following early commitments from Collin Hartman and Devin Davis Jr., Indiana’s recruiting efforts in the 2013 class for a big man have taken on a national flavor with BeeJay Anya, Luke Fischer and now Randle. IU sits in a favorable position already with both Anya and Fischer.

The Prestonwood Christian Academy junior is ranked No. 3 overall by ESPN.com. A lengthy list of schools, including Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas, are recruiting him.

Both Randle and Jones are potential attendees for Duke’s “Countdown to Craziness” event next month in Durham, according to DevilsIllustrated.

Here’s an ESPN scouting report on Randle from July’s Peach Jam in Augusta, South Carolina:

A man among boys even against the nation’s elite. A rare combination of power and skill who scores both inside and out. What makes him so special is how he handles the ball to get to the rim and get old-fashion 3-point plays. He shoots it well from the perimeter and can not be stopped when he wants to score. He has excellent hands and is a great rebounder when he puts his mind to it.

And here’s video of Randle from May’s Spiece Run ‘N Slam Classic from CityLeagueHoopsTV:

I think I might wet my pants if we got Julias.  Are you kidding me?  Cody / Hanner / Randle and Lyles back-to-back-to-back-to-back.  Any one of those three at any one time and our guard / wing play puts us top 10 for the foreseable future.

    Please Julius.  You’ll love Indiana.

Wow, Randle is a beast inside!  Dominant at the rim like Perea is.  Looked like he can hit the mid-range jumper and handle the rock well for a big guy too.  Appears to be a complete player.  Have agree with the idea that he will be very difficult to recruit at this stage. Being out of state hurts too but if we have a shot at him go for it.  I feel that Beejay Anya or Derek Willis are more likely scenarios.  Surely one of these guys would want to play with all the other elite talent we have coming in.  Anyway if we can land one of these top bigs in 2013 it would be huge.

man this kids a freak!! But I am a realist here and I don’t know how in the world we can swing this kid into the candystripes. Would love to see this type of exposure bring in BeeJay though

i totaly agree. Been getting a feeling we might want to back off. Greg Oden ring a bell. we can get bigs who can play so why take a chance on a hurt project. Its probably in Jurkins best interest to go somewhere he can get PT. His development will be very slow if hes not gonna get minutes.

Granted he’s playing against maybe lesser competition, but I don’t care this guy is a BEAST!!!. Already NBA talent ready, he reminds me of the days of Shawn Kemp “the rain man” before the drug problem and excessive weight gain. If IU gets Randle and his AAU teammate Jones then lookout! We’re talking about dynasty in the making and the old days of ole IU and then some more!

New post by ITH this morning about PJ and his coach in NC…you might want to read it. Jurkin is not a hurt project..and it’s a little demeaning to throw him out of the picture on the mere prospect that we’ve got an outside shot at Randle. Let’s see where things go and as CTC says, scholarships have a way of working themselves out.

0:47 – Says it all. What a score this would be. I’d love to hear gus johnson commentating on one of his dunks.

I agree.  PJ is going to be a freaking stud in college!  20 pounds of muscle and an improving skill set and he’s already a top shot blocker and defensive presence!

I said before PJ committed that he could end up being CTC’s biggest recruit.  He’s not only what most teams DON’T have but he also started the momentum of recruits committing to IU!

He has two more years to hit other schools’ midnight madness.  Guys this talented don’t generally commit early.

Not only what you say, but quite honestly I don’t even think they’d probably even be playing the same position.  Jurkin’s a 7-footer and definitely a 5.  I know we saw a ton of low post stuff on this reel but he was also driving from about 15 feet out which would lead me to believe he’s a 4 or a 5, especially given that he’s 6’8″ (although at his age he could conceivably grow another inch or two.)
