IUHoosiers.com: Catching up with … Victor Oladipo

Who are some of the players that you try to emulate on the court?
“Definitely Dwyane Wade. I have been watching him since he was a rookie and because he is six-foot four and I am six-foot four so I can relate to him. I just try to take parts of his game and mix them in with mine. I can’t be exactly like Dwyane Wade, but I take parts of his game and mix them with mine.

“And of course I watch all the greats – Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson – and try to take things from their games. Even the way they act on the court or their mentality so I can stand out.”

On what he likes most about Dwyane Wade’s game:
“How aggressive he is and how well he attacks the basket and finishes. I think I am capable of doing that but I have a lot to work on. I am improving every day and I’m going to keep working hard. I see how easy it is for him to get to the basket, I am trying to get my game like that.”

Victor has a Winner’s attitude! Hoping to see his PT go up this year!

Good luck with your game VO..just no more hanging on the rim after a dunk for a really dumb technical. Rookies):

Love it Vic.  Keep at it.

Vic is poised to make a big leap this year.  I think he has tons of potential to make it happen. Again, 2012 has another thing coming when they step onto campus and Vic is there to meet them as a Junior.

I hope victor gets more of a green light and confidence in his offensive game this year. He could be the V factor if  Mo Creek isn’t fully just yet. I love the fact he plays with enthusiasm and a chip on his shoulder.

I have coached an unenthusiastic team and players and you would just love for them to show something emotionally.

Victor has the heart of a lion. If he has had as strong an offseason as I’ve heard he will definitely earn more PT than he did last year. If he can hit his FTs at a higher clip and finish more around the rim having his rebounding on the floor more often will be big. Vic is probably the underclassman I’m most excited to see this year(no, that’s not a typo).

Off topic. I have news that Buss dominated open gym last weekend. I was told his handles have improved, he knocked down shots and he was an octopus on defense. And the person who told me this isn’t a big Buss fan and he attended open gym. That’s impressive considering the source.

I said the same thing when he got it, but that technical actually turned out to be a huge momentum shift for IU because Hoffarber clanked both free throws.  Think it was Hoffarber, wasn’t it?

With Vic’s added muscle and improved ball handling he could be very hard to stop when attacking the rim.  It’s great to hear he’s focused on taking his game to this kind of level.  D Wade is the perfect guy for him to model if he wants to use his strength and athleticism to his advantage.  All his teammates are saying he has made significant progress in the offseason.  Of all the returning players I am very excited to see how he and Will have developed.  The two of them could certainly solve several opportunities on both ends of the floor.

What and where is open gym, and who was he playing against?  (Sorry for the newbie type question, but I really don’t know.  Thanks.)

Open gym is at Cook Hall where recruits, commits and current players play together. I think the concept is to get em all together and just play ball.

I would like to see him work his way into the starting lineup. With more offensive skills this year, he’s one of a few we have on the roster that can bring it on both ends of the floor.

Victor and Will can really turn IU’s record around if they can do it on the court. Go IU!
