Report: Mitch McGary cuts list to six schools

by in Recruiting | August 9th, 2011

According to Dave Telep of ESPN.com, 2012 Brewster Academy big man Mitch McGary has narrowed his list of schools down to six. And neither Indiana or Purdue made the cut:

Making the cut, in no specific order are Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Michigan, Duke and Kentucky.

In-state schools Indiana and Purdue are not being considered and McGary feels good about his list, though he left the door cracked.

“Maybe if another school stays in contact, but I kind of wanted to narrow it down to these six,” said the No. 4 overall player in the 2012 class. “I’ve got strong feelings about these six schools.”

Indiana’s involvement with McGary, which was strong last winter, cooled off in recent months. Here’s what the five-star big man told Inside the Hall last December about his interest in the Hoosiers:

“Coach Crean thinks I can be an NBA player. He wants me right now. He says I’d fit great there. I think so, too. I like Coach Crean, I like the whole coaching staff at IU and I like some of the recruits they’ve got now. I think I’d fit in well with them.”

Indiana currently has five verbal commitments in its 2012 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 1 nationally by ESPN.com.

Delaney impressed with play of Ferrell, Lyles at Nations

by in Recruiting | August 9th, 2011

Jason Delaney is entering his first season as head coach at Indianapolis Arensal Tech where he’ll lead a talented group of returning players led by Trey Lyles. Delaney coached last season at Indianapolis Washington, which opened and closed its season with losses to Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Park Tudor.

With that unique perspective, Delaney is well-versed in the development and progress of both Indiana commitments and he spoke to Inside the Hall on Tuesday morning about the play of each at adidas Nations:

On Yogi Ferrell at adidas Nations:

“Yogi is a fantastic point guard. You see the improvement over the last couple of years. I coached against him twice last year and just from the sectional championship game, he’s improved even more with his ability to score, especially the pull-up jumper. But he makes the guys around him so much better and that’s what you need from your point guard. You need a leader and you need someone who makes the other players on the floor better. And I think Yogi’s definitely doing that. He’s such a strong guard, too. That makes him tough to guard because he can take contact when he gets into the lane.”

On Trey Lyles at adidas Nations:

“As a fan and his coach, it’s like being his big brother. I’m not going to say father because I’m not that old. I’m so proud of him for playing on that stage. When he got in (last night), I thought he did a great job. 12 points and six rebounds. He’s playing up against older kids and he showed that he belonged. I just hope that all transforms back at the high school level where he can make his teammates around him better like Yogi and use the experiences that he’s been blessed to do and really utilize those on the high school level.”

Yogi Ferrell shines on final night of adidas Nations

by in Recruiting | August 9th, 2011

Adidas’ final grassroots event of the summer, adidas Nations, wrapped up Monday evening at Cal State Dominguez in Carson, California in front of a national television audience on the CBS Sports Network. For Indiana fans, the broadcast was a chance to check out three of the Hoosiers’ verbal commitments — Jeremy Hollowell, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Trey Lyles — for a final time until next winter.

Here are our thoughts on the individual performances of Ferrell, Lyles and Hollowell:

– Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell: Unofficial stats had the Park Tudor point guard with assist totals ranging from 14 to 19 in the USA Red 2012′s 130-108 win over USA Blue 2013 in the third place game. For most of the night, Ferrell took on the role of pure point guard by setting up teammates like Gabe York and Kaleb Tarczewski for open looks. In a sequence the announcing crew called the “pass of the week,” Ferrell darted through the lane and fired off a left-handed behind the back pass to Tarczewski for a layup. When he wasn’t setting up teammates, the future Hoosier was knocking down jump shots from the perimeter. If there was any doubt that Ferrell should be in the conversation for the country’s top floor general in the 2012 class, it was erased with his play on Monday evening.

– Trey Lyles: While the Indianapolis Tech sophomore spends a lot of time operating in the paint during the AAU and high school season, he spent a majority of the night on Monday connecting from midrange. Lyles, who is just 15 and was one of the youngest players in the event, didn’t venture much into the paint in his team’s 130-108 loss.  With the strength advantage that guys like Tarczewski and Dajuan Coleman held over him, that was probably a heady decision. It’s clear that Lyles has worked on his perimeter game all the way out to the 3-point line and when given the slightest opening, he’ll connect. Unofficial totals had the five-star forward with 14 points and six rebounds.

– Jeremy Hollowell: A late addition to the event, the Lawrence Central senior didn’t begin play until the Saturday session for the USA Blue 2012 team. Starting with a 3-pointer from NBA range, the future IU wing scored eight of his 11 points in 90-second stretch of the third quarter to help bring his team within one at 76-75. USA Blue 2012 went on to win the adidas Nations championship 114-107 over USA Red 2013. While Hollowell has been knocked in the past for drifting out of the flow of the game in stretches, he rose to the occasion for most of the summer against elite competition. That should bode well for future success in the Big Ten.

Notebook: Dakich on Harris, recruiting rule changes, more

by in Media | August 8th, 2011

+ Former Indiana interim and assistant coach Dan Dakich discussed the Gary Harris recruitment during a couple of segments of his radio show on 1070 the Fan this afternoon. While Dakich initially said he wasn’t ready to make a prediction on Harris’ destination just yet, he later added that Harris would “probably” pick Indiana. The reason? Indiana is making it difficult for kids to say no. Dakich cited Indiana’s recent success on the recruiting trail as a big reason that it could be tough for Harris and his family to say no to the Hoosiers.

+ ESPN announced networks and times for the 13th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Indiana at NC State will tip at 7:15 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, Nov. 30 on ESPN2.

+ The NCAA Division I Leadership Council has come to a consensus on five potential recruiting rules changes according to this release. Eamonn Brennan has a solid breakdown on what the changes could mean over at ESPN, but here’s a quick look at the five changes according to the NCAA’s release:

  • A start date for official visits beginning after the men’s basketball championship in April of the junior year.
  • Deregulating the type of communication between coaches and prospects (including text messaging and other forms of electronic communication).
  • Allowing unlimited communication after Aug. 1 before the junior year in high school.
  • Permitting evaluations at certified nonscholastic events on two weekends in April, with some restrictions.
  • Permitting some contact at a prospect’s educational institution in conjunction with an evaluation, with some restrictions and requirements.

+ Jarred Reuter, who picked up an offer from Indiana earlier this summer, will transfer and is re-classifying to 2015 according to his father, Rob.

+ If you missed it, Luke Winn of SI.com took an in-depth look at the transfer behaviors of top 100 recruits and how it relates to de-commitments. The interesting conclusion: “A player who attended multiple high schools was almost twice as likely to decommit from a college than was a single-HS recruit.”

USA Midwest, Harris win Nike Global Challenge

by in Recruiting | August 8th, 2011

The USA Midwest team, featuring 2012 IU recruiting target Gary Harris, beat Canada 99-94 last night in Hillsboro, Oregon to win the Nike Global Challenge.

Harris finished with nine points, two steals and a rebound in 11 minutes off the bench in the championship game. He rolled his ankle driving to the basket late in the third quarter and did not return.

In three games at the event, Harris averaged 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.0 steals in 16.3 minutes per game. He shot 15-of-29 from the field for 51.7 percent.

The Global Challenge is the final event in Nike’s series of Skills Academies.

The five-star guard from Hamilton Southeastern also participated in the Kevin Durant Skills Academy in Chicago and the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio, earlier this summer.

2012 Brewster Academy big man Mitch McGary was also on the USA Midwest roster, but was unable to play in the event due to a severe ankle sprain.
