Jordan Hulls talks about leadership role

by in Media | August 24th, 2011

Indiana guard Jordan Hulls was made available to the media this afternoon and there was plenty of talk about embracing a leadership role as he prepares for his junior season. Here are some quotes:

On what his focus is to improve upon between the start of classes and regular season practices::

“Just getting after it every day. Trying to go out there, get better. Not only me, but my teammates as well. Whether it’s strength training, agility, conditioning or the individual workouts, we’ve just gotta go hard every day. We’ve just gotta get better. Defense is probably going to be a huge key for us, so it’s something I’m looking forward to.”

On being more of a vocal leader with the team over the summer::

“Yeah, for sure. I’m just trying to be more vocal. In high school, I was more of a guy to lead by example. I’m not necessarily yelling at people here unless they need to be. I’m just trying to encourage everybody, get everything organized, just trying to be the leader that they want me to be here. I have some help, Verdell (Jones), the seniors are helping me out as well. But it’s just something I’ve kind of taken upon myself and been asked upon me from time to time. It’s just something as being the point guard as well is also a thing I have to be is the leader.”

On what made him decide to take on the leadership role::

“I think it was a variety of those things. Coach telling me, ‘be more vocal, be a leader.’ And I think that the team, we need to have somebody to be that guy and I’m more than willing to be that guy. Whether that’s getting on somebody or instructing workouts or whatever the case may be. That’s kind of just how it came about and I’ve always been the leader on most of the teams I’ve been on and it’s just something that I need to take control of.”

ESPN.com: Class of 2012 Team Basketball Recruiting Rankings

As you delve into the ESPN class rankings, it’s important to keep in mind that the landscape of the Class of 2012 is dynamic. Indiana built a tremendous recruiting class and did so by virtue of a bevy of early commitments. The challenge for the Hoosiers is to hold off the blue bloods of college basketball as the elite take official visits and make decisions.

Like the Hoosiers, Jay Wright used early commitments to lay the foundation for Villanova’s exceptional class. In a perfect world, the Wildcats score another commitment and further bolster their case for the nation’s top class. In their rear view mirror are the three-time recruiting champions, Kentucky. At some point, the Wildcats, UNC, Duke and Arizona may force a shake up at the top but nothing is certain. It’s recruiting and it’s constantly changing.

Indiana Class of 2014 Rankings

by in Recruiting | August 24th, 2011

With the July evaluation period in the books, it’s time for our first crack at ranking the ten best prospects in Indiana’s class of 2014. If you have any questions about the rankings, feel free to address them in the comments.

10. Bryant McIntosh, Greensburg: The 6-foot-2 McIntosh is a reliable decision maker whose biggest strength is his shooting. McIntosh is a smart and unselfish player that distributes the ball efficiently but at the same time looks to score himself. He can get past defenders on the bounce and get to the rim, but also scores using a crafty floater and pull-up jump shot from mid-range. McIntosh is sound defensively, but could look to improve his strength and quickness to help him as a man-to-man defender.

9. Jeremie Tyler, Indianapolis Tech: One of the best long-range shooters in the class, Tyler has a quick release on his jump shot and can fill it up from deep when he gets on a roll. The 6-foot-1 combo guard also looks to break down the defense off the bounce by getting past his man and finding teammates for open looks on the perimeter. He buys in on the defensive side of the ball and also possesses good quickness which makes him a threat to defend either guard spot reliably. One area Tyler could look to improve on is looking to score more often off the dribble.

8. P.J. Thompson, Brebeuf Jesuit: Thompson is a heady point guard who makes good decisions and knows how to run a team. At 5-foot-8 he is undersized, but has a nice burst of quickness and is a solid ball handler. One of his biggest strengths is the ability to penetrate and dish the ball off to teammates for open looks. Thompson is also a capable 3-point shooter and can make the defense pay if they fail to check him on the perimeter. Besides improving his strength, Thompson’s biggest area for improvement is expanding his ability to score off the bounce.

Report: 2014 Chicago big man Cliff Alexander on campus

by in Recruiting | August 23rd, 2011

Update: Multiple reports on Twitter are now stating that Alexander will actually visit on Wednesday.

According to Scott Phillips, 2014 Chicago Curie big man Cliff Alexander is visiting Bloomington today. Alexander, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, is rated the No. 13 prospect overall in his class by ESPN.com.

Alexander, who plays AAU with the D. Rose 15-and-under team, told Sam Estes of OrangeandBlueNews.com in July that his list of schools includes Connecticut, DePaul, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State and Ohio State.

Here are a couple looks at Alexander (wearing No. 11 in White in the first video and No. 12 in White in the second video) via YouTube:

An early look at the 2011-12 frontcourt

by in Commentary | August 23rd, 2011

We detailed a few early backcourt storylines on Monday. Today, a look at the frontcourt:

– Cody Zeller’s arrival: Fresh off a summer where some veteran players appear to have taken an important step in maturity and leadership, Zeller’s inclusion should do much to keep the good vibes going in Bloomington. It’s been said before, but the Washington native’s ability to do a lot of fundamentally sound and smart things on both sides of the ball will not only give Indiana a high-level frontcourt talent for the first time in the Tom Crean era, but it’s likely the other four guys on the court with Zeller will reap the benefits of his game, something that should translate into the ultimate goal: more wins.

– What will we see from Tom Pritchard?: After averaging almost 10 points a game as a freshman, Pritchard’s offensive game the last two seasons has suffered. Last season, he used the least amount of possessions– garnering a “nearly invisible” tag from KenPom — of any player getting rotation minutes. Pritchard also made just 34.8 percent of his free throws in 2010-11. The addition of Zeller could allow Pritchard some more confidence in a secondary frontcourt role. Additionally, Derek Elston noted in comments he made to the media earlier this month that “the free-throw thing is not a big issues anymore” for Pritchard. And if Pritchard can show this kind of swagger and fire alongside Zeller consistently this season, his senior year could be one in which he rebounds a bit.

– Can a three-man rotation get it done?: After Zeller and Pritchard, Elston — who may be in for a bit of rebound himself if he’s back to full health this season — could exist as a sound third option in the frontcourt. But with the Hoosiers losing out on Garrett Green, Bobby Capobianco’s transfer and Jeff Howard not seeing much time in 2010-11, depth may be a concern for the Hoosiers. It’s likely Christian Watford will be called upon to play the 4-spot at times next season, though it would probably benefit the team more to keep him out on the wing as much as possible.
