Patterson talks July, potential impact for 2012 class

by in Recruiting | August 30th, 2011

Inside the Hall had a chance to catch up with 2012 IU commitment Ron Patterson on Monday evening as the senior guard begins his final high school season at Broad Ripple.

Here are some notes and quotes from our conversation:

– July’s impact: After making the move from Indiana Elite Team Indiana to Indiana Elite One after the spring portion of the AAU schedule, Patterson played in the adidas Invitational and adidas College Coaches Classic in early July and used the rest of the summer to work on his game. “I just felt like I needed to work on my game other than playing (in AAU),” he said of the decision to skip the second July evaluation period. “I’ve just been doing it off God given talent, I’ve never really worked (on my game). I think it was beneficial because I’d already committed and I wasn’t really hurting or losing anything.”

– Recent trip to Bloomington: While the visits of Luke Fischer and D’Angelo Russell made headlines over the weekend, Patterson confirmed that he and two of his future teammates also made the trip down to Bloomington. “It was just me, Jeremy (Hollowell) and Yogi (Ferrell) going down to play in open gym. That’s about it. We got in a couple of good runs,” he said of the experience.

– Building relationships: One of the built-in advantages for Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class is the familiarity that the group will have with one another upon their arrival in Bloomington. Four of the five recruits (Ferrell, Hollowell, Hanner Perea and Patterson) played together this spring and also traveled to the NBA Camp in Charlottesville, Virginia in June. “Our relationships are growing more,” Patterson said. “We’re learning each other’s games, our dislikes and likes, where we want the ball.”

– The movement: With all of the accolades and national praise the 2012 recruiting class has garnered, expectations for this group to help lead Indiana back to national prominence are a given. Patterson said he and his future teammates are looking forward to the challenge: “We’re going to make a big impact. We’re going to make a big run in the (NCAA) Tournament. We’re trying to get IU back and rolling like it used to be.”

– Final year of high school: Broad Ripple’s move to Class 2A for this season might make the potential for a deep March run more likely, but the Rockets will have to deal with Ferrell in their sectional. That hasn’t stopped Patterson from dreaming big in his final season. When asked about emerging victorious from Sectional 42 at Broad Ripple, Patterson talked defense as a key: “Not letting Yogi get in his rhythm and beat us.” Broad Ripple’s goal will be to win a state championship according to Patterson and individually, he hopes to win Mr. Basketball.

Patterson will definitely help our transition game.  Every time i’ve watched him play he grabs a board and goes coast to coast like Latrell Sprewell used to.  I like the fact that he’s got some size like some of our other wings, which should help lock down some teams, defensively.

Soo underrated.  Patterson will show people whats up when he wears the cream and crimson.

The fact that he hasn’t worked on his game much is absolutely frightening b/c he is immensely gifted.  If that is true he has a ton of potential.

    Keep at it Buss!

like Latrell ? ……. and then when CTC tries to sub for him he can choke him out.

Wish Ron the best of luck this season.  Between coaching changes and Steven Jamison passing away, I’m sure he’s went through a lot.

2A is loaded this year but BRHS has a great shot if they can get past Park Tudor in the sectional.

That part of the interview makes him sound like a kid who’s reached that point where he’s realizing he’s going to have to take ownership of his own skill development if he wants to make it to the next level.  This can only be a good thing, and once he gets to IU, if he brings that mentality and the work ethic that goes with it with access to Cook Hall… watch out!

What would happen if Knight coached Latrell?  Which one would end up choking the other one?

I keep hearing how underrated Patterson is but I watched him three games in Minneapolis and was not impressed. I know it was only one tourney but I would say he was almost overrated from what I saw. He really got schooled one game for about 40 points from a guy from Minnesota . Hopefully he just had a bad weekend.

He and Harris both remind me of Sprewell.  Before he became notorious for choking Carlisemo, he was a huge scorer for Golden State and the guy flew up and down the court and attacked the rim with reckless abandon.  Both of these kids posses the athleticism and ability.

Funny, and dirty at the same time. Nice work.

Patterson shows a good head in this interview. Given that those summer leagues are just glorifed scrimmages controlled by guards where little defense is played…Ron may well have improved his game by working on the specific aspects of it. Let’s hope so.

He fits perfectly in our program and the CTC offense.  Not sure how he meshed with his Indy elite teammates.

That’s all you have to say Marcus ? …………….you gotta be chokin me.

  • JerryCT

Why guess ? Lets put em in da cage and find out

Seriously when he was with the Knicks he was the hardest working player on the court on both ends of the floor. I agree with your adjectives.

( so , did PJ tap out or what )

It’d be interesting but I think Broad Ripple plays mostly (if not entirely) 2-3 zone.  Seem to frequently extend it to half court and trap to force turnovers.

If they’re not on it Yogi may shred their zone.  I seem to remember Ronnie Johnson put on a clinic last year in the sectional in breaking down a defense.

Park Tudor has a lot of weapons for Yogi to feed, I’m afraid BRHS’s style may play in PT’s favor.

Tell me that wouldn’t sell a whole bunch of tickets in just a little bit of time. I know I’d buy one.

What else does Patterson have on his HS team?  (Seriously, not baiting you or anything, I truly don’t know.)  If there isn’t anyone of consequence he may be forcing shots because he thinks that’s the only way they’ll win.  I’d hope he has a firm enough grasp on the game to see the talent surrounding him at IU and realize he doesn’t have to score a ton.  I get the impression that he understands defense is going to be his calling card in college.

Patterson will be solid in college without question.  He is entirely way to skilled and athletic not to be.  Go with his size, love for the game and tenacity and the kid will figure it out.

I have watched him play at least 5 times as well – Broad Ripple high school is a good par 5 from where I live.  He does force some shots.  But, look at his team and thier style of play.  He will for sure have an adjustment period when he gets to IU, not to much unlike that of a Rod Wilmont or Vic Oladipo, but, trust me, after that first year Ron will be a stud for the crimson and cream for 4 years.

I respectfuly disagree with you on Patterson.

Etherington is another issue.  However, I will give a pass here given he is all IU and helped to bring in Zeller.  No Zeller, no Yogi.  No Yogi, no Hollowell…You get the picture.  I hope he can be a solid role-player.

I do agree on the Fischer kid.  We need to move on from that one quickly.

Another quick note though, it takes a team to win championships.  Precisely why I like Hartman and Davis in 2013.  You can’t have and don’t want all 5 star studs.  I think Crean is putting a good TEAM together.  So remember to put each guy into context before completely blasting him.  Otherwise, you can judge once he has played a couple games in Assembly.

He didn’t exactly admit he was “lazy.”  Poor interpretation of his words.  Part of the reason why the level of fundamentals of today’s youth players are declining is because they’re almost forced into playing so much AAU ball in order to get exposure for scholarship purposes.  As we’ve seen in the highlights, AAU is exactly a team game, no does it help with individual development.

Just to paraphrase Buss’ words, he had already committed to IU, so he longer needed to be seen by coaches/various scouting services and could therefore work out on his own.  Makes perfect sense to me.

Believe want you want indy. I am not a blog hound nor do I post often. All im saying is the longer the wait on Harris it doesn’t look good IMO. He was very very close last Nov, but his parents talked him out of it.

You are probably one that doesn’t think we need Harris and Buss is better. That saying your crazy. We need Harris!!!!!!!

Marcus, I only watched him AAU. Three games before he jumped ship on Yogi & Hanner. The other two games with his new AAU team. The guy can play defense, but he is out of control driving the lane at times and jump shot is spotty.

Yes Patterson has talent on the defensive end. LOL I guess two high school coaches that coached against Buss who been around a long time are blind too. Etherington can shoot, but can he get his shot off at this level?

Hulls your wrong about I always liked him. Kid has heart.

Before you cast stones Lyle any college basketball coach wants athletes. I know 2 good ones personally. A good coach can get them to play as a team. All im saying is 2 ships and now maybe 3 with Luke 2013 could have been used for D.Jackson, (this kid is tough as nails) Harris is probably looking around saying they have many wings, and we could miss out on the kid from Damatha high school.

Thats why im not a fan of getting so so players committ so early.

    Keep,
Thanks for the well written response, unlike a few of them. I was not trying to blast (sorry if that is how it came across).

Point taken on Etherington, thought I still think we get those other 3, but we will never know.

    Marcus, to answer your question:

From what I saw last year* they needed Patterson to force things.  Didn’t really see any ability to score in the post, heavily perimeter oriented.  Team relied heavily on defense – they had a lot of athletes to pressure you on defense (2-3 zone, sometimes extending to start trapping at half-court).

They were 20-3 last year, only the sectional loss to North Central was by more than 4 pts, so it mostly worked.  NC was loaded and #1.  Hope that helps.

*Only saw them twice, one being that sectional loss.
