Derek Elston talks health, Hulls’ leadership

by in Media | August 11th, 2011

Derek Elston met with the media on Thursday afternoon and revealed a few interesting nuggets as the school year and season approaches. You can listen to the full audio (courtesy of Dustin Dopirak of the Bloomington Herald-Times) below.

A few items of note:

+ Elston said he had surgery in May on a sports hernia, one that hampered him during last season, along with knee issues that bothered him as well.

“I played last season and I know I did terrible and I know probably the fans thought I did terrible, which I don’t blame them,” he said. “The fact is I tried to get through it … I just had a hernia the entire time and I tried to get through it the best I could.”

Elston also added he’s nearing 100 percent, and that he feels “absolutely fantastic.”

+ The junior from Tipton also revealed fellow junior Jordan Hulls has emerged as the vocal leader of the squad and that with a group of veterans, things are more player-driven than at any point in his IU career.

“Jordy’s got us on the line every day at 3:30 when we we’re supposed to be on there [for pre-workout running and stretching],” Elston said. ” … Jordy will take you off to the side and kind of tell you and explain to you what you’re doing wrong and what you need to do to improve upon it. I haven’t seen that yet since. He is a lot more vocal. He’s one of those guys that starts screaming now. Conditioning days, if you’re not making it, Jordy’s the first one to tell you. And whether you like the way he’s saying it or not, he’s going to say it. If that doesn’t motivate you, then he’ll get you off the floor. He’s had to kick a couple guys out of the conditioning.”

+ Elston said he’s working on guarding the 3, 4 and 5 positions for this coming season as well as adding strength and muscle to his lower body.

    Holy crap… this is AWESOME!

A: Elston closer to his freshman year would be ideal (as he did look considerably worse this season)
B: Jordy as the leader? SOLD!

Jordy taking the reins. That’s huge! A kid with credibility who is obviously commanding the respect of guys his own age. It’s coming together. We have a program with a true foundation again. Someone else mentioned on another thread about the collection of quality people that has and continues to be assembled. I see big things on the horizon.

This team is getting ready to explode. I expect a much improved team. One that actually plays like a team.

Also good to hear Elston is “absolutely fantastic”. Really really hope he takes his big step forward this season. A little disheartening to hear him almost apologize to the fans for being hurt. These kids know exactly what is being said about them – good and bad.

Nice to hear Derek’s respect for J’Nay Jackson.  I thought Watkins would be impossible to replace.

Just goes to show that what you see on the outside is not what you think, I was hard on elston, could not understand why his play had not improved, thought maybe he was not giving his all, now I understand and I should be the apoligizing to him!

Love…Love…Love the things I heard here!

    1.  He is healthy and prepping to guard 3-5.
    2.  Hulls being the leader that we’ve missed since DJ left.
    3.  Really love that Hulls kicked some people out of conditioning!

Cannot wait for the season to start.  Go IU!

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

Curious as to who Jordy ran out of conditioning.

now if only Alex can get the gossip on who those players might be who were kicked out of conditioning…  :)

I’m in Elston’s camp.  I like the kid and really hope that he is healthy and that’s what held him back last year.  I’m hopeful that he’ll come out even stronger but won’t get pushed around on the block with a healthy gut.  That could have affected his shot as well last year.

Really not surprised at all to see Jordy as the leader of this team.  You could really see him starting to become the leader at the end of last season and he’s a winner and winners get tired of losing and will usually rise to the top.

I wonder if he has improved his defense where he doesn’t have to trip players going to the basket haha. Unfortunately, that’s the kind of moment that will stay with a player throughout his career. But anyway I digress, I’m a big Derek Elston fan and I hope he steps it up big time. Jordy leading the team is big. ACCOUNTABILITY AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll give Elston the benefit of the doubt on the injury…because he WAS terible last year. IU needs this kid to develop. He can shoot, board and run. However..he couldn’t guard a chair last year..lead feet (maybe because of the hernia). If he plays D he will get some minutes. Also glad to hear that Hulls has officially taken on the leadership mantel. Now if Crean will put the ball in his hands to start the offense…we might have the start of something good.

Hopefully the work ethic, leadership, being tired of losing and the influx of new talent will inspire this team to play at a higher level. I too, have been hard on Elston without knowing he was injured last season. My apologies. Show us what you are made of Derek.

While I love Hoosier football… bring on October!

Maybe he was just waiting for Jordy to take the leadership role. We’ll see.

It’s hard not to like Elston although it was frustrating to watch him struggle. If he can provide defensive depth and rebounding the team will be better. I think we have the guard and small forward positions in decent shape. It’s the big guys that need to step up for IU to be .500 in the BT.

Great interview!     Elston’s importance to the team this season can not be understated. If he plays the way he is capable, that sets up a very nice 3 man rotation at the 4 and 5 spots between Pritch, he, and Zeller.    That would be HUGE for us to be able to hold our own or even win some battles down low after being dominated in every conference game for 3 years.  Very nice to hear about Will’s improvement, with his athletic ability, he could be another Luke Recker without the drama.   As Hulls becomes the general of this team it’s becoming more clear why Duke was so interested in him, he’s going to turn into our Wojo this year, except he can also shoot lights out……Random thought:    With Hulls, Zeller, and Harris we could have 3 of the last 4 Indiana Mr Basketballs showing the rest of the country how the game is supposed to be played next year!

  • Marsh21

i’ve always felt Elston was a key to this teams success.  The last few games of his freshman year were really promissing. He was a beast at Purdue and things looked really good. i hope this year he’s healthy and shows us what he’s capable of. Sampson wouldn’t have been recruiting him if he didn’t have talent.  Yes, Sampson knows talent boys.

I like the fact that he said he was working on strength in his lower body.  Kid is built like a tank up top, but like so many kids, the ability to move people and hold your ground comes from below the waist.  He should gain a little quickness too if he does it right.  Good to know he’s healthy, love the kid, hope he has a great year.  The team will be better this year if Elston plays to his potential.

I’m hoping Elston becomes this season’s Jeremiah Rivers.  No, they don’t really do any of the same things; I’m just saying it in regards to understanding his role during an off-season that followed a pretty tough year for him and returning to be an integral part of team.

Derek, defense notwithstanding at this point, is probably the most versatile returning big man.  I’m not saying he’s the best, but as far as his ability to shoot, bang, athletic ability to (theoretically) guard 3 positions, and rebound, he’s probably the one with the least deficiences (again, other than the defense, but I’m willing to give him a huge benefit of the doubt if he had a hernia.  That reduces your lateral movement, your vertical movement, and you sure as hell don’t want to be running into a guy like Trevor Mbakwe with your intestines trying to leak out  of your abdomen.)

I like the comparison of Jordy.  I have thought the same thing.  He could either be Wojo or Hurley.  Either way he can be the backbone the carries the torch to a new era of IU hoops.
