Garrett Green takes final visit to Wichita State

by in Recruiting | August 3rd, 2011

The recruitment process is coming to a close for Garrett Green, who announced he would leave Louisiana State to play his final season elsewhere on July 18.

In the 16 days since that announcement it’s been a whirlwind for Green, who is now on his fourth visit in a little over two weeks. The 6-foot-11 center, who averaged 6.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18 minutes per game last year at LSU, confirmed this morning via Twitter that his current trip to Wichita State will be his final visit.

Green visited Indiana from July 22-23, Long Beach State on July 29, San Diego State from July 31-Aug. 1 and started his Wichita State visit today.

According to his recruiting profile on ESPN.com, Green originally considered Wyoming back in 2006, where current IU assistant Steve McClain served as head coach from 1998 through 2007. Green’s high school coach, Derrick Taylor, told Dustin Dopirak of The Herald-Times that he knows McClain well.

The ties to both Long Beach State and San Diego State are likely proximity to Green’s hometown of Woodland Hills, California. The Long Beach State campus is roughly 50 miles from his home and the San Diego State campus is about 100 miles south.

Long Beach State could be the better bet of the two California programs to play in the NCAA Tournament next season as they return four of five starters from a team that won the Big West Conference regular season title. San Diego State, meanwhile, will have to replace Kawhi Leonard, the No. 15 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, and three other starters.

At Indiana, Green has the potential to supplant Tom Pritchard as the starting center on a Hoosiers team that is expected to take a large step forward in the Big Ten with the addition of McDonald’s All-American Cody Zeller.

He acknowledged being impressed with his visit to Bloomington shortly after completing his trip: “It’s amazing. I was watching a couple of the highlight reels of games and the atmosphere, the fans that are there, it’s amazing.”

Green is expected to announce a decision on Friday, which is also the date he graduates from LSU.

Fingers crossed….he could be a big help this year and down the road with the development of Cody.  It will be very beneficial for him to go against a guy his size everyday in practice.  It would be nice to have two big kids who are athletic and can get up and down the floor as well as rebound and block shots.  I love The Pritch but I think it helps his numbers also, maybe less minutes but I think it will open things up a little as long as our shooters do their job.

After visiting Indiana, LBSU and SDSU he’s going where, Wichita State for what. This Cali kid is a granola bar unless he comes to IU and then he’s a Payday. If the kid can play, he’ll choose IU. If he can’t, he’ll pick a cupcake institution.

  • Casey B.

He’s playing for one more year only, and basing his decision first and foremost on which school offers the best graduate study program in his desired field. The kid’s not going to the NBA; he’s preparing for life after college. The school he chooses is not indicative of his character or ability.

Yes, that is correct…he has mentioned it too many times.

Not to get off topic…but D Fife take a position at Mich St?  I must have missed this as well as Zak Irvin committing to Michigan?

You are correct and the Walton kid commited to Michigan as well recently.  Fife happened a couple months ago, hangin with Izzo now.

I hope that does end up being the basis for his decision, because I think we win that fight. I think that location and athletics program status still come into play, though. I know he said he is concentrating on academics, but it’s hard to focus on the merits of just the one thing when you will be playing and studying.

Those who continually touch on the practice aspect are spot on - constantly contesting Cody’s shot, altering VJ drives to the lane, defensive adjustments for size, stepping up the physical play WITHOUT fouls, etc. Though Garrett would certainly find his game time minutes – IMO his true value is the practice element.

I think The Pritch and Green just basically split the minutes, which would mean about the same minutes a game for TP as he had last year.  Either way it allows Cody to flourish at the 4 spot and still be able to help on the boards (2 good rebounders would be a nice change too).  I felt bad for TP for the last 2 years cause nobody else would step up to help him down low at either end…now we may have 2 bigs to help out. and they can play as aggressive as they want to for the most part.

Unless he cares about moving back closer to home IU should be his best option. He has a relationship with McClain, will have a fellow player on the same path through grad school in Roth, and then there’s the whole banners thing. I would be surprised if he goes anywhere else. Then again I’m quite biased.

  • base

LSU has a sports management grad school and doctoral.
Don’t drink this kid’s bs kool-aide, he’s looking for playing time on the court first and foremost.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

What you have to remember is wherever he chooses to go to school, he’s going to be there for another 2 years AFTER he’s done playing basketball.  From experience I can tell you a grad degree takes time, not only in terms of years to complete, but also in hours spent writing and reading.  So, he’s probably not only choosing the best grad program but weighing his options considering where he wants to spend the next few years of his life.  I’m an IU diehard and really, really want him to pick IU, but let’s face it . . . other than the Bloomington girls, there isn’t a whole lot drawing a Cali kid to the state of Indiana outside of basketball and he’s going to be here for at least another year or two after his basketball days are over.

He couldn’t have stayed at LSU…it is a part of the graduate school transfer rule.  To play right away you must go to another school that doesn’t offer that graduate program at your current school (or something along those lines).

more along the lines of: a school that offers a graduate program that your current undergraduate school does not offer.

after his days of PLAYING basketball are over. He can still be a graduate assistant though, right? And those two years after he’s done playing are gonna be pretty kickazz if my crystal ball is even close to accurate.

I see ABSOLUTELY nothing bias in your statement…judges?

What?  The judges say I’m biased too

Aceman – Unfortunately, or fortunately, he probably won’t be there another 2 years AFTER he’s done playing, especially if he goes the sport management grad school route. From experience (getting my masters at IU in sport management) I can tell you it doesn’t take three years to graduate that program. Actually, if he wants he could be done in one year and two summer sessions – the route I took. Now, obviously, I didn’t have the demands of basketball practice and games, but I did work 25 hrs a week on top of classes and homework. So, honestly, with our outstanding academic help/facilities and if he’s a hardworker, he could probably graduate next August if he really, really wanted…

This has been curious to me, too, base. He can transfer without a wait if his undergraduate school doesn’t offer the masters program he wants. But LSU does offer a masters in Sports Management and on the surface it looks a whole lot like the one that is offered at IU. Both are a Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis on sports management, both are referred to as “interdisciplinary approach to the study of sport management,” both are 36 credits and the list of requirements and classes are very similar. The program offered at Long Beach State is the same, too.  The only one that is different is San Diego State because it offers an MBA in Sports Management with an MBA diploma. Perhaps we’re misinformed about him pursuing a graduate degree in sports management?

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

In the interview we did with him, he said he was looking at two programs but didn’t specify what they were.

  • Casey B.

    Just joking.

I just find it interesting when someone removed from the situation presumes to know what a young adult is thinking regarding where he’ll attend school.

I’m going off of what Green has said is important in interviews, and I don’t see any reason any of us should be suspicious of it.

He could do it that fast but it’s more probable that it will take him 2 years, especially if he works as a grad assistant or another job.  I did my sports management/coaching master’s at BSU while working full time and the issue there wasn’t the course load I could handle but the fact that the program had overlapping classes so I couldn’t overload and finish quickly.  IU may have it laid out more efficiently though where he could finish quicker.

Alex, just to be clear – when I suggested that perhaps we are misinformed about his choice of masters degrees, I was NOTsuggesting that you or ITH had misinformed us. Your article didn’t say or suggest what degree he is pursuing and I haven’t seen it stated anywhere in any of the interviews given by him, the LSU coach, or his high school coach. In fact, it seems that the interviews have carefully avoided mentioning the exact degree program. The only places I’ve seen it written that he is pursuing a Masters in Sports Management is by folks posting in the comments sections on numerous blogs (both IU and San Diego State). Which is why I suggest that perhaps we are misinformed.

  • base

Are you telling me he couldn’t have stayed at LSU to play ball and go to their grad school?

  • base

I see Alex gave you some cheese with your whine.

  • Casey B.

I’m not interested in having a tease-fest with you. Simply pointing out that I don’t see basis or necessity for jabbing a kid’s character or accusing him of BS’ing because he’s being diligent about where he wants to finish up his education.

If you look back on interviews, he clearly states his first priority is finding the best fit academically based on what he wants to study. I don’t think he’d arbitrarily lie…

  • Rantool

Come on down to Bloomington Garrett, we have the best colledge basketball fans in the nation! Be a part of the team that brings Indiana back into the national spotlight!

  • Ben

Correct, LSU doesn’t offer his program.  If they did he would not have been able to do this kind of “free” transfer without sitting out a year.
