Five story lines from the first July evaluation period

With the first of two live evaluation periods in the books, Inside the Hall takes a look at five Indiana basketball recruiting story lines from the opening ten days of July recruiting:

– Tom Crean earns frequent flier miles: Even with nine verbal commitments lined up for the Hoosiers’ next three recruiting classes and the current No. 1 class nationally in 2012, Crean blazed a trail across the country in the first ten-day period. Confirmed stops included the adidas Invitational in Indianapolis, the NY2LA Sports Next Level Invitational in Mequon (WI), the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville, the Nike Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), the adidas College Coaches Classic in Indianapolis, the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam in Mequon (WI), the Best Buy Summer Classic in Minneapolis and the Best of the Midwest in Indianapolis. Crean is often described as relentless on the recruiting trail and that was certainly the case as Indiana’s head coach worked from sun up until sun down scouting IU’s current commitments and top targets.

– Elite goes deep at adidas Invitational, Best Buy Classic: The Indiana Elite team that features Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell and Yogi Ferrell was questioned by some for failing to win a tournament in the spring, but the trio of Indiana commits led Team Indiana into the semifinals of the loaded adidas event at North Central. After dropping their opening super pool contest to Shabazz Muhammad and Dream Vision, Elite bounced back to knock off the Andre Drummond-led Connecticut Basketball Club and the Atlanta Celtics. In tournament play, the hot hand of Hollowell (more on him in a bit) led Elite to three straight wins before falling 60-58 in the event’s semifinals on Saturday to New Heights. In Minneapolis at the Best Buy Classic, Elite advanced to the championship game and finished 5-1. For a group that’s playing together for the first time and possesses limited depth, Team Indiana’s play in the first evaluation period was impressive.

HD Video: Jalen Coleman Highlights at Best of the Midwest and adidas Invitational

by in Video | July 16th, 2011

Indiana’s recruiting work in the class of 2015 was confirmed on Friday when the Hoosiers extended a scholarship offer to Jalen Coleman, a 6-foot-2, 155-pound guard that will attend Indianapolis Cathedral next fall.

Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star was the first to report the offer.

Tom Crean and the IU coaching staff tracked Coleman closely during the first 10-day July evaluation period, which included games at the adidas Invitational and the Best of the Midwest.

Coleman, who turned 15 on Friday, joined the Eric Gordon All-Stars before the start of the July evaluation period.

The Cathedral guard is playing alongside Bryant McIntosh, Perry Poindexter and Sean Sellers on the 15-and-under team that is coached by Brian Keeton.

Coleman told a group of reporters at the adidas Invitational that he was already receiving interest from Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue.

Inside the Hall was in attendance at the adidas Invitational and the Best of the Midwest and we’ve compiled over six minutes of Coleman video which is available after the jump.

Q & A: Hanner Perea talks improvement, mindset

2012 LaPorte La Lumiere and Indiana Elite power forward Hanner Perea was Tom Crean’s first five-star recruit to commit to the Hoosiers when he gave his pledge last Halloween.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound Colombia native met with reporters after Indiana Elite’s 80-73 loss to Dream Vision at last week’s adidas Invitational to discuss a variety of topics.

Inside the Hall has a transcript of that lengthy Q & A session below:

Where’s your game at this summer? What do you want to work on? What do you want to get better at?

I’m working on my shot, my dribble, all my post moves. My game is getting better. I’ve been taking my time, thinking about what I’m going to do, what move I’m going to make. I’ve been working the most on my jump shot because I know whenever I get to college I’m going to need it.

You hit that one turnaround in the second half. How good does that feel and is that an example of what you’ve been working on?

It feels good because I know there are some people that think I can’t do anything else other than dunk. Having that in mind helps me to get better on my jump shot and get better on my post moves.

Looks like your free throws are coming along, too. Is that something you’ve been working on a lot?

Oh yeah. I have the ability to shoot free throws but I just think about it too much. I’ve been working on my mindset and everything, stuff like that. So I have been getting better with my shot.
