Q & A: Garrett Green talks about Indiana visit

by in Recruiting | July 23rd, 2011

Indiana welcomed 6-11, 230-pound LSU transfer Garrett Green to Bloomington this weekend for a visit and Inside the Hall caught up with the potential 2011-2012 roster addition for a Q & A on Saturday afternoon:

On the visit to Bloomington:

“It was fun. It was a really good experience and I liked the guys. I played with them a little bit in some pickup and toured the facilities and the town. It was good. I liked it all.”

On what he learned going through the recruiting process the first time that he’s applying now:

“Just making the best decision for your future. I guess not getting caught up in the excitement of things and just focus on what your main goal is and what you’re trying to accomplish. And for me it’s an education and grad school so I’m just trying to not lose sight of that and that’s what I’m focusing on.”

On what he learned about the academic programs at Indiana:

“We went to a couple of the grad schools and we narrowed it down to two that really struck my interest and that I was pretty excited about. I haven’t decided which one yet, but IU has a lot of academic support and we spent close to 45 minutes to a hour just going over different grad schools and programs.”

On Cook Hall and the facilities at Indiana:

“It’s amazing. I was watching a couple of the highlight reels of games and the atmosphere, the fans that are there, it’s amazing. If you were to compare it to anything in the SEC, it would be like a Kentucky. Really good fans and I was excited.”

On potential visits that he may take to Long Beach State or San Diego State:

“It’s a dual visit — Long Beach State and San Diego State. I was going to knock both of those out. And Wichita State.”

On a timetable for a decision:

“I’ll be graduating August 5 on stage (in Baton Rouge) and I hope to have a decision by then.”

Looks like if he chooses any of the other schools it would purely be on proximity to home. IU knocks all the other ones’ out in all other facets I would think. I bet Long Beach State and SDS fans don’t even know who he is. But IU fans do, because IT’S INDIANA. I hope he realizes that. Good luck to him either way though.

Im not suprised that he wont make a decision this weekend based on what he was saying leading up to the visit.  As nice as it would have been for Crean to close the deal while he was here, this kid is taking a practical approach to this to ensure he makes the best decision possible.

And while all of us, as IU fans, can pretend and kid ourselves that IU is the best choice for Green, it really comes down to whats most important to him.  IU is a fantastic destination for a basketball player, with great post graduate programs to offer.  Im sure Crean and his staff did their job.  Now its just up to what Green prefers.

Nothing but positives… he liked everything about IU. And we should know his decision within two weeks. I’ll take it.

Sounds like he had a good visit and came away impressed.  Hopefully the trip will stand the test of time and he ends up choosing IU.

I don’t want to read too much into one interview, but he sounds like he’s got a really good head on his shoulders.  Gotta say that I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get him.  Seems to be a great fit for everyone.

IU offers a highly rated grad program in his area of interest, a chance to play in Assembly Hall in front of the best fans in college basketball, and the chance to play on national TV and the BTN frequently. Green could also be part of a special year helping the program regain its proper place among the elite of college basketball. Sounds like a great opportunity for him. I hope he and his family view it the same way.

  • Kelin Blab

Glad IU is getting the first visit, should be a strong comparison to the others. The academic program choices seem to have intrigued him so kudos there. I will live the the ‘Kensucky’ comparison although IU fans are a lot smarter, more teeth, and our point guards take the own college entrance exams! (get some D.Rose)

From a basketball standpoint San Diego St. may be the strongest, not sure what they have coming back….however it isn’t Indiana.

Looks like Arizona State is no longer in play.  Interesting, considering they recruited him out of high school according to Scout.

I hadn’t heard of the interest of either SDSU and Wichita State before.  As respectable mid-majors, both are places where one could launch a career in basketball management by eventually donning a tie (or whatever).  But really, where better to do that than IU?

Although its exciting if he were to just have lept at Indiana I actually like that he is taking a mature approach to it all.  As others have said, he appears to have a great head on his shoulders and I actually agree with how he is going about his decision.  I think we have a great chance but, to my earlier point, I think bball is the cherry on top to what all he is trying to do in life, which I respect.

This would be a great fit for all.  I like our shot.  Hopefully this works out.

Why would you think that Long Beach fans don’t  know who he is?   He is from southern California, he was a high school team mate of one of LB’s three year starters, and basketball is played outside of Indiana.

I can’t speak for SDSU fans but, believe me, LB State fans are very aware of and excited about Garrett Green’s interest in the Beach.

  • BigRed

Well, if there’s one thing he needs to know before coming to IU, it’s this: Don’t EVER, EVER EVER EVER, compare us to Kentucky.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

It’s called an exaggeration. I don’t think I need to waste my time comparing the fan bases between the 3 schools. If he picks Long Beach State, good for him and I wish him luck.

SDSU lost quite a bit: 4 starters and 2 off the bench. On paper they should be the weakest of the schools. With their conference looking the way it does, tournament bid looks unlikely.

LBSU lost little from a 20+ win team and they’re desperate for size. Frontcourt last season: 6-5, 6-6, 6-8. Dan Monson is a good coach.

Witchita State returns a lot from a 29-win team that won the NIT, should be pretty good.

Good Luck Garrett with your decision.

So he’s not considering ASU anymore?

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

He did not mention Arizona State as a possible visit.

Might read too much into it but sounds like it is more an education decision than a basketball or proximity to home one.  And he sounded excited about the programs so we should still be in good shape. I wonder how much basketball is playing into the decision.

  • RJG

If this young man is planning on a career involving basketball, it seems like IU would be a great place to make contacts with some of the best.  Even though the team has struggled, having Indiana University on his resume couldn’t hurt his chances of landing a great job.

I have not had the pleasue of seeing Cook Hall in person yet, but am looking forward to it on my next visit back to the homeland. However, I just had an interesting idea for CTC when he has guys on campus for a visit.

We need to have some production majors in the music school do a top-notch recording of the pep band and plant some mics around the Hall during the playing of the William Tell Overture, capturing the true sound of the crowd. Some good camera work in the crowd would be nice, too. Seven minutes before every hour, we should play that through the sound system in Cook Hall – preferably with the video on a massive big screen. The standard replay of this just doesn’t do it justice. Then, if the Geology Department could simulate a minor tectonic shift, something in the neighborhood of a 4.0 on the Richter, to get the feel for the vibration in the Hall, that would be a nice touch, as well.

Alex, you think you could pass that along to Fred Glass?

Stuff like this is the slowest from of torture.

“Hmmm, sure would be nice if a 5th year senior center landed in our lap.”

    Someone please shoot me.

We have a great chance to land this kid. If he doesn’t go with IU, so be it, we weren’t counting on something like this anyway and it’s just for this season anyway. But it would definitely be a sweet summer surprise!

  • HoosierSmitty

Alex, did Remy Abell not sign a Letter of Intent? Or was that just never updated in the recruiting sidebar.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Can’t sign one twice and he already signed one with Bradley.
