LSU transfer Garrett Green will visit Indiana

by in Recruiting | July 19th, 2011

According to a report by Randy Rosetta of TigerSportsDigest.com (subscription required), the LSU Scout.com affiliate, Tigers big man transfer Garrett Green has been contacted by the Indiana coaching staff:

Senior forward Garrett Green was granted his release Monday and he will pursue a Master’s degree at another school and play his final season there.

NCAA rules allow players who have graduated to transfer to another school and play right away if their current school does not offer a Master’s program of their choice. Green is scheduled to graduate with his Bachelor’s degree in sports management on Aug. 5.

The 6-11 California native said Monday night that within hours of being granted the release, he had heard from coaches at Arizona State, Long Beach State and Indiana. He has scheduled an official visit to IU for this weekend.

Inside the Hall confirmed Rosetta’s report with a source late Tuesday evening.

Indiana has one scholarship remaining for next season. With only one year of eligibility left, Green wouldn’t affect scholarship numbers beyond the 2011-2012 campaign.

As a junior at LSU, Green started five of 32 games and averaged 6.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18 minutes per game.

Green’s departure from LSU was announced by the school on Monday evening:

“Coach Johnson has given me every opportunity to be successful here at LSU,” said Green. “I’m getting my bachelor’s degree, had a chance to play in the SEC, and be a part of a great basketball program. I really appreciate everything Coach Johnson and LSU have done for me, but I look forward to my next opportunity.”

What’s your point? Great players have great games all the time. Taylor was All-World in that game. Why wasn’t VO guarding McCamey when we beat the Illini? Because JR took him out of the game.

  • Plane1972

Loop, please don’t confuse my reading skills with an irrational statement like Cody Zeller being the most complete HS big since Jerry Lucas. More so than Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Ralph Sampson, Sam Bowie, Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning, Moses Malone, and more I’m sure.

You act like all of those guys floated under the radar coming out of high school. You’re statement is wrong no matter how you read it. You don’t need the benefit of hindsight to know Cody Zeller does not belong in that company.

    So much for playing nice.

Who cares dudes? All is well in Hoosierland!

Can’t have my IU degree questioned like that, Milla.

    Sorry.

Adam, you see the 1000 points while others see the 500 turnovers. First thing we all need to do is separate the person from the problem. Nobody here wants to make this into a personal attack on a player, but rather to eradicate mistakes that lead to failure.

Maybe Loop never saw Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Akeem or David Robinson play HS ball…I never did. I saw them play later in their careers. BTW, you left out Tim Duncan at Wake;)

JT pinned 40 on us because Bo Ryan learned that running a high ball screen w/CWs man would bring a switch and CW gave Taylor all the room in the world to drain…i dunno 6(?) 3s in consecutive possessions. We were S-s-s-l-l-o-o-w-w-w to figure that out. It was killing me watching it on TV cuz it seemed so obvious what they were doing.

Doesn’t EVERYONE need to earn their spot in the starting lineup? Why would you throw Abell and VO out of contention for the starting 5 so fast? The age of entitlement is over…fight for your spot or sit on the bench.

The word is “complete”. That includes scoring around the rim, 10′ bank shots off of the glass, hooks and baby hooks, posting up, seeing the floor, passing out of double teams, passing for assists, defense around the rim, defense around the perimeter, setting screens, offensive basketball IQ, defensive basketball IQ, team play, etc. I have given you my reasons. You just give your general list of great players. They were great players in HS but NOT “complete” great players in HS! Walton, Lucas and Zeller were complete great players in HS.

Wow, I’m going to start out by saying that your rant was completely out of line and more or less rude towards Alex, with egregious accusations that make absolutely no sense.

“That is a gray area and a matter of opinion at this point”

False. The NCAA takes this sort of deal very seriously. It’s a very slippery slope in the NCAA’s eyes from contacting a recruit as a representative of the university to soliciting his services in other unwelcome ways. Alex, like most people in media employment, is aware of this, yet you have the audacity to claim you know better for whatever reason. Ridiculous.

” Frankly, you sound a bit HYPOCIRITICAL by negatively commenting on what
I say to someone who is graduating, while you being the editor for a
site who shares twitter feeds from select recruits who have not even
graduated high school.  How do you think your “special treatment”
effects recruiting? That is the definition of special attention, yet it
is no worse than what I did.”

Wrong again. There is a clear difference between what you do and what Alex does. Alex simply reports videos, interviews, and articles based on the what the recruit gives him, and doesn’t go out of his way to interfere with his life. You, however, are attempting to enter his social sphere by contacting him on Facebook, and this not only might make the recruit uncomfortable with the fans of the university, but also annoy him slightly. You may in face be hurting his recruiting negatively, ironically. In regards to bias, Alex post information on every recruit that Crean has been in contact with and is actively recruiting. There is no such bias in my eyes on this site.

“With all honesty, this is the first message I have ever sent to anyone,
but I get hung out to dry because you are trying to puff your chest out”

Yes, clearly, Alex has an agenda in warning you against your actions. It couldn’t possibly be because he has a point, he just has to be trying to flex his ego. The fact that you so quickly judge Alex for a two line warning hurts any credibility you had.

So in other words, everyone appreciates your dedication, but do so in a more appropriate fashion. And in regards to your feud with Alex, get a grip.

“I was always told not to dish it out if you can’t take it.”

He didn’t dish anything out in the first place. You are the only one here trying to start a controversy for no legitimate reason.

  • Plane1972

I feel like Martin Short in that SNL skit where he plays that defensive guy who nervously smokes as he’s being interviewed on 60 Minutes. I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to argue the merits of Lew Alcindor’s skills in high school. I guess I haven’t broken down the game tape enough to see the ELITE abilities of young Mr. Zeller.

I’m officially done with this topic.

  • Plane1972

Gray area or not, a personal message like that from a fan to a prospective recruit is a little creepy, imo - unless you’re a little kid or something. I have to agree, leave the recruiting to the coaches.

I don’t think it’s possible to “Quadruple Like” Task and Plane’s responses at once.

So just pretend I Liked these responses 3 more times.

    Let’s move on……………………………….

  • LTTelamon

I think you partially missed my point.  I am not arguing that if one looks at rankings only, ASU ranks well below IU. However, there are certain programs at ASU that are held in very high esteem, as I mentioned, and are superior to their IU equivalents. Prospective students absolutely do look at these things… not just numbers and rankings. The Biodesign Institute at ASU is one such example of an asset that makes certain programs superior.

It’s not as simple as US News or The Princeton Review would have you believe. If it were, Cody Zeller would probably be at North Carolina right now.

He say’s the biggest factor is academics…if that’s true, this should be a no brainer, IT’S INDIANA!!!

  • eph521

Seriously? The negative reaction to this guy is primarily for the response he gave when Alex pointed out it’s inappropriate to do things like trying to friend a recruit on FB. Even if Alex wasn’t the Editor of ITH, which he is, the response to Alex was still uncalled for.

Damon Bailey was the most complete post player I ever saw in high school.  Unfortunately he was 6’3″.

  • Anonymous

If I’m winning I want my free throw shooters out there.  Remy could be in this list, too, from what I remember.  Jones should be a better free throw shooter given his mid-range game and I hope that’s one of the things he’s worked on in the off-season.

  • Anonymous

I haven’t looked at everything regarding Garrett but I did hear that he’s had some injury issues in the past that could have affected his minutes/performance.  I’m not disputing your assessment, I’m just saying there could be potential for him to be more productive than his previous stats indicate.

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

Wrong, I was. Unfortunately I was 5’2, really slow, and possessed a horrible jumper.

  • madnessaddict

Im sorry, but I just reread this thread, and nobody said that IU will be a Big 10 contender by adding Green.  By a contender, I have to assume you mean competing for a reg. season championship.  Again, nobody said that.

Of course, if you just meant contending for a 4th or 5th place finish, then yeah, IU has a chance of doing that with or without him.

  • IUfan 67

    take Pritch out of there

  • iuball

Exactly, In the fight for playing time I say Abell wins. Crean gloated hard about his leadership and perimeter defense. Jones doesn’t even know what the word “fight” means.

True Victor has to improve his awareness on the floor, but I think he can make the jump.

Though, I still have faith Creek will return healthy and Oladipo can continue to be a huge spark off the bench.

An e-hug of the group variety may be in order here. Dog days of summer, lockouts, and pining for IU hoops are all weighing on us.

Much love to the ITHers, especially you, Loop.
