Video: Gary Harris Highlights at IBCA Top 100 Showcase

Tom Crean, Matt Painter and Tom Izzo made their way to Ben Davis on Monday to get a look at five-star guard Gary Harris as he participated in the IBCA Top 100 Showcase.

Inside the Hall was there and we’ve compiled over 90 seconds of Indiana’s top recruiting target in the 2012 class in the embedded media player below. (Note: You can expand the video to full screen by using the arrows in the bottom right hand corner of the player.)

I wouldn’t say he was overpowering defenders, but yes he’s a solid prospect.

He was scoring all of his points at the rim. I think Joe told me he shot about three times from the perimeter. I’d say for a guard to go to the rim whenever he wants is overpowering.

I know this wasn’t the whole game, but it looked like his team’s philosophy is “give Gary the ball and get the hell out of his way.”

Must. Have. Gary. . . . then we go to work :)

The kid can get to the rim pretty much whenever he pleases, no matter the competition.  He is a special player, of the Eric Gordon caliber in my opinion.  Maybe not quite as good a jump shot yet but the althleticism and strength he has is superior to almost anybody on the floor that will match up with him.

If he doesn’t choose IU, I hope he doesn’t doom his future and go to PU.  It would be a shame for his talent to go to waste…..

I know there exists those who don’t think we need Gary due to the plethora of 2-3 men we have from 2010-2014 classes.  However, I would disagree.  Not landing Gary, the top rated player in his class from the state of Indiana (not counting McGary) would be blotch on what otherwise is a stellar class.  We land Gary and we are a top 3 class for sure.  It would be nice if we had some more beef up front but losing Gary Harris would be painful.  This guy can make an immediate impact to IU on both sides of the ball.

At the.:35 second mark Gary drives hard to his left, dribbles through his legs while driving, spins moves and finishes with a nice lay in.  There might be a handful of guys in the nation that are SG that can do that with ease.  Gary is one of them and none of those guys are on the current roster at IU or have committed to IU.

Gary’s driving ability with Yogi’s would make for a tandem unmatched in 2012.

I see some similarities to Gordon in his game too.  Defenders had a ton of difficulty keeping Gordon out of the paint, and it seems like that is GH’s strength as well.  Harris, at least right now, isn’t in the same league as Gordon in respect to shooting and range, but I’m assuming he will improve in that area.

The thing is that while we’d all love another shooter, the ’12 to ’14 teams are going to have quite a few good shooters (Hulls, Hollowell, Creek, Blackmon, etc) we don’t have a ton of guys who can get to the paint at will.  I’d love to have him!!

Gary makes everything look so easy.

I don’t think he has the same game as Gordon.  He is lankier, and I don’t think he is as quick as Eric.  The shooting range for EG was a huge part of his game, and it enabled him to make defenders stretched out.  I would definitely take Gary Harris on the team any day, but I am not sure what he brings that we are not already getting in this class.

Hope CTC is saving his best sales pitch for GH cause if he comes to IU he makes a big  impact, and starts right off the bat, even with who we will already have and even with who will come in with him. IMHO he is that good and people that say we don’t need him are just positioning to keep themselves from having a major letdown if we don’t get him. Can we still be an improved team and win more games even if we don’t get him ?  More than likely, yes, but with him, we are almost assured to be a vastly improved team and should win several more games and then there is the little thing of making everyone else work harder in practice to be able to get their minutes. He is capable of taking us from being a lot better to being a whole lot better and maybe more importantly contenders for at least B10 titles. Again JMO

IF he did come I would guess we could start 4 freshman.  Yogi at the 1, Gary at 2, Jeremy at 3, Hanner at 4, and then Cody at the 5.  Or, perhaps Peter at the 5 and Cody at the 4.  Either way Cody starts.

Defense and Size.  We have players with aspects of both but rarely possessing the combination in the abundance Gary does in one person.

I think you’re going to have trouble keep a mature Victor Oladipo and/or Will Sheehey out of the starting line up as juniors.

  • Kelin Blab

Victor starts from next year on….

  • B_ball_baller12

idk if I see Eric Gordon because Gordon was a rare combo of speed and strength…he was a streaky shooter but not great, even though he had unfathomable range. When he was hot he could stroke, but I see E’twuan Moore in him with his quick first step and body type

    …and Jeremy Hollowell. That’s a sick rotation.

  • Derbus

Watford sux at defense and there will be players shutting him down in practice.  Play defense or hit the pine:  CTC’s new mantra beginning in 2011/2012 season.

    Good problems to have.
