HD Video: Abell, Zeller discuss Indiana’s 105-103 win

by in Recruiting | June 11th, 2011

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The first of the two annual All-Star games between Indiana and Kentucky came down to the final 15.7 seconds.

And in the game’s final play, it was Indianapolis Pike’s Marquis Teague, who is headed to Kentucky, isolated against Louisville Eastern’s Remy Abell, who will play at Indiana.

Give round one to Indiana.

Teague milked the clock all the way down under three seconds and as Abell backed off slightly in anticipation of the drive, the Kentucky-bound point guard elevated and knocked down a game-winner from just inside the 3-point line.

The shot lifted Indiana to a 105-103 victory in front of a sellout crowd at Bellarmine University in Louisville.

“Teague hit a big shot,” Abell said. “Big players make big shots. I gave him the jump shot most of the time the whole game, because he just wanted to drive, but he took another jump shot. I contested it the best I could.”

Indiana has won 22 of the last 25 games in the series.

Perea says neither Adams, Elite influenced decision

by in Recruiting | June 9th, 2011

One person that didn’t talk to ESPN.com’s Mike Fish for the A-HOPE investigative stories that were published last month was Hanner Perea, the 6-foot-8 forward from Colombia that verbally committed to Indiana last October.

At last night’s Junior-Senior All-Star exhibition in Kokomo, Herald-Times beat reporter Dustin Dopirak asked Perea for his reaction to insinuations in ESPN’s story that Perea was pushed to Indiana by Mark Adams and Indiana Elite:

“People said they are trying to make me go to IU. I picked IU because that’s where I feel good. I feel that I’m going to be in a nice place with good people around me. That’s why I picked IU. … They never tried to push me. The first thing they told me was I could go anywhere I want. I like IU. I’ve been around IU a lot, so that’s why I picked them.”

Perea also told Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star that while he read the story, he did nothing wrong and that the truth will come out in the end:

“I read it. I didn’t know somebody was doing a story like that. Not everything they said is true so I’m not going to worry about it. I haven’t done anything wrong.

“I’m just going to keep playing and doing what I’m doing. In the end, everyone will know what is true. When I first saw it, it bothered me but I just have keep moving ahead.”

While this story will continue to come up as a discussion piece between now and the time of Indiana’s first practice in the fall of 2012, the final outcome will be determined by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

If, as Mark Adams told Dopirak, IU’s compliance folks and the NCAA are both aware and comfortable with everything that has taken place, this should be a non-issue moving forward.

Q & A: 2013 Belleville (IL) guard Malcolm Hill

by in Recruiting | June 9th, 2011

One of the newest names to emerge on Indiana’s 2013 recruiting radar is Belleville (IL) guard Malcolm Hill. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard, who plays AAU with the SW Illinois Jets, took an unofficial trip to Bloomington on Sunday.

On his visit, Hill had the opportunity to tour campus with assistant coach Bennie Seltzer and also participated in a camp at Assembly Hall and Cook Hall. Inside the Hall caught up with ESPN.com’s No. 36 overall player in the 2013 class on Wednesday night for a Q & A:

(Editor’s note: HD video of Hill from the adidas May Classic is available after the jump.)

On the Sunday trip to Bloomington:

“It was just a visit. I looked around their campus and went to their camp and that’s all. They have a nice campus, it’s a good environment and I saw that they have good study habits. Their study program has their kids make time for school and basketball.”

On Cook Hall and the camp:

“I really like the practice facility a lot. I talked to Coach Crean. We went through drills. We talked about how their style of play was and how they do team ball instead of individual basketball.”

On his feelings about Illinois and Missouri, who were the first two schools to offer and the other schools recruiting him:

“I’m kind of neutral about it. I’m not too excited. But then again I’m not just waving it off. I’m glad they offered me a scholarship. The other schools that are looking at me are Ohio State, Xavier, UCLA, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Providence and Tennessee.”
