Recruiting notebook: Indiana calls on 2013 prospects

Wednesday marked the first day college coaches could begin making phone calls to class of 2013 prospects and it was a busy day in Bloomington as the Indiana staff reached out to several prospects on our 2013 Recruiting Board.

Here’s a rundown of the uncommitted prospects that Indiana called today, in no particular order of significance:

– Detroit Community (MI) wing Byron “Bo” Zeigler confirmed to Inside the Hall that the Indiana staff called him and Florida also got in touch with Zeigler.

– Hamilton Southeastern guard Zak Irvin told Inside the Hall that he talked to all four members of the Indiana coaching staff in the early afternoon. Irvin also picked up offers from Butler and Michigan. Other schools that called: Baylor, Cincinnati, Tennessee and Xavier. Georgetown and Marquette also reportedly called as did Illinois and Purdue.

– Mishawaka Marian point guard Demetrius Jackson confirmed to Inside the Hall that he heard from Tom Crean. Michigan, believed to be one of Jackson’s top schools, did not extend a scholarship offer.

– Cleveland Benedictine forward Mark Williams confirmed to Inside the Hall that he talked to the IU coaching staff. Williams also told Inside the Hall he heard from Cincinnati, Central Michigan, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

– Belleville (IL) wing Malcolm Hill told Inside the Hall that he missed a call from the Indiana coaching staff early in the afternoon, but planned to talk with the staff later in the day.

– Chicago Hope Academy (IL) point guard Jalen James confirmed he heard from Illinois, Indiana, Florida State and Michigan via his Twitter account.

– Ft. Wayne New Haven wing V.J. Beachem told UMHoops that Butler, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Purdue and Tennessee were in contact.

Video: Gary Harris at Indiana Junior-Senior All-Star Exhibition

2012 Indiana recruiting target Gary Harris finished with 15 points and five rebounds in the Junior All-Stars 104-102 sudden death win over the Indiana All-Stars last Wednesday at Kokomo’s Memorial Gym.

Q & A: 2014 forward Jarred Reuter

A new name to surface on the Indiana radar for the class of 2014 is St. Mark’s (MA) forward Jarred Reuter. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound Reuter is described on his ESPN.com scouting report as a “power player with a terrific motor.”

Inside the Hall caught up with Reuter, who missed his freshman season due to a foot injury sustained playing football, for a Q & A:

On the interest from Indiana:

“Two weeks ago at Elite Camp they offered me. I got down there and met with Coach Crean on Saturday before Elite Camp and just looked around the campus a little bit and went and played throughout the day on Sunday. After Elite Camp is when he (Coach Crean) offered me.”

On his game and where he is as a player:

“Right now I’m like 6-foot-8, 250. So I think a big part of my game that stands out is that a lot of kids don’t have is just strength. I’m just ahead of my age for physical strength and size right now, but because of that I rebound really well and I play well in the paint against big bodies. My shot’s pretty good all the way out to 3, but mid-range to 3 I can knock it down. I can pass as well.”

On the campus, Elite Camp and the IU coaches:

“The first day I was, I don’t even know how to explain it, more than impressed with the campus when I saw everything. It was amazing. It was beautiful, the size of it and all of the people. That got me liking it right away, before even playing or meeting all of the coaches at once, was just going on campus for the first ten to fifteen minutes. I could already see that it was somewhere I might want to be because I liked it a lot. Going through camp, hearing all four coaches talk and do drills and some of the players talk, I liked the way they were.”

On where he’ll be playing in July:

“I’m playing for the New England Playaz. I think I’m playing for both the 16′s and 17′s. I know we’ll be at adidas 64, the nationals in Orlando, this weekend we’re going to some tournament in Portland. We’ll be at the tournament in Indianapolis and I’m not 100 percent sure what the other tournaments are, but I know we’ll be at those three.”

Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Wrap-Up: 2011 Class

After watching a pair of Indiana All-Star exhibition games, a Kentucky All-Star exhibition and the annual Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games, here’s Inside the Hall’s take on the three 2011 IU signees that participated in last week’s festivities:

Cody Zeller (35 points, 24 rebounds, three blocks, three assists in 48 minutes in two Indiana wins)

– Scouting: Zeller had an outstanding week. He put up ridiculous numbers in the two exhibition wins over the juniors and while he was limited in Friday’s game with foul trouble, he nearly managed a double-double in just 20 minutes. Zeller has a complete skill set: He can step out and shoot from the perimeter, handle the ball with fluidity and score with his back to the basket. He was fantastic rebounding the ball, showing off strong hands, good timing and above average athleticism as a leaper. Zeller did just about everything a big man should do last week, impressing onlookers, coaches, teammates and opponents alike. — Joe Eberhardt

– What’s next: Zeller will step into the starting lineup immediately upon his arrival in Bloomington and while expectations might be too high, Zeller’s calm demeanor and quiet confidence should allow him to be mostly unaffected by the pressure. Indiana’s front court will be greatly improved as Zeller’s presence should help free up Tom Pritchard, Derek Elston and Christian Watford for easier scoring opportunities. Don’t be surprised if double-doubles are the norm rather than the exception during his freshman campaign. — Alex Bozich

Austin Etherington (Seven points, six rebounds, three blocks, two assists, one steal in 26 minutes in two Indiana wins)

– Scouting: Etherington struggled to score the ball or get into the flow offensively for much of the week. The 6-foot-6 wing is typically a reliable shooter, but just couldn’t get looks to fall when he found an opening. Etherington did play pretty well defensively by using good instincts and strength to keep his opponents in check. The highlight of his weekend was a crowd-pleasing block against Western Kentucky signee George Fant at Conseco. — Joe Eberhardt

Indiana in the mix for 2011 wing Ryan Taylor?

Ryan Taylor, a 6-foot-6 wing from Indianapolis who played his final prep season at Louisville’s Western High School, reportedly has an offer from Indiana according to this story published by Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports.

(Update: Goodman tweeted the following moments ago: “Been told by a source that Indiana has not offered Ryan Taylor a scholarship – despite Taylor’s uncle/coach saying that was the case.”)

The primary focus of Goodman’s report was that Taylor would be visiting Kansas this coming weekend, but the Indiana-related nugget was tossed in near the end:

Taylor, who transferred to Louisville Western High prior to this past season after three years at Lawrence North in Indianapolis, also has offers – per Paul Handley – from West Virginia, Indiana and South Carolina.

Handley, if you didn’t click through to read the entire report, is Taylor’s uncle and also coached him at Western this past season.

Taylor was once committed to Louisville but is still awaiting test scores to qualify to play next season. The former Lawrence North wing told Rick Bozich of The Louisville Courier-Journal in an interview last week that he would likely head to Hargrave Military Academy if he failed to qualify for 2011.

Taylor scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Kentucky All-Stars’ 105-103 loss to Indiana on Friday and had 24 points and 10 rebounds in the Kentucky All-Stars’ 94-82 loss to Indiana on Saturday.

Indiana is currently at 12 scholarship players for next season. The NCAA limit is 13.

Around the Hall: Wrapping up Indiana All-Star week

– Lots of chatter that this past weekend’s Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games may have helped to revitalize the series. Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star writes that the rivalry still seems to be alive and Rick Bozich of The Louisville Courier-Journal says the game in Kentucky should be moved downtown to the KFC Yum! Center.

– Dustin Dopirak and Hugh Kellenberger give their final analysis from the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games over at The Hoosier Scoop.

– Bob Kravitz of The Indianapolis Star writes that Cody Zeller is ready for his next great challenge in Bloomington.

– Both James Blackmon Jr. and Trey Lyles tried out for the USA Basketball 2011 Men’s U16 National team, but were not selected for the final roster. Blackmon Jr. measured a wingspan of 6-foot-11 at the USA Basketball team trials over the weekend.

– Dylan Burkhardt of UMHoops attended Michigan’s College Practice Camp and has scouting reports from many of the prospects that attended. Notable players with IU interest in Dylan’s reports: Zak Irvin, Demetrius Jackson, Mark Donnal, Jalen James, V.J. Beachem, Malcolm Hill, Drake Harris and Perry Poindexter.
