A four-game shootout on February 4 at Lawrence Central will feature eight Indiana recruits.

Park Tudor freshman Troy Spears sat down with Tom Crean recently on an unofficial visit to Bloomington.

The Big Ten agreed to a multi-year contract extension for men’s basketball on Thursday with CBS Sports.

NBA Top 100 Camp Q & A: Mitch McGary

by in Recruiting | June 17th, 2011

The NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp kicked off on Thursday at the University of Virginia and four of Indiana’s class of 2012 commitments — Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Ron Patterson — are participating. Hamilton Southeastern’s Gary Harris and Brewster Academy’s Mitch McGary are also in attendance.

Greg Rosenstein, former men’s basketball beat writer for The Indiana Daily Student and currently of USA Today, had a chance to catch up with all six prospects in a set of interviews that will appear on Inside the Hall.

Rosenstein caught up with McGary on Thursday:

When do you think you will be making a decision?

Probably this fall, I’ll make a decision before the season starts.

Do you plan on taking the five official visits that are allowed?

Yes. I haven’t decided where yet, but hopefully soon.

Will there be any unofficial visits you take after this camp?

I’m not sure at the moment. I have to look at the schedule, but I’m not sure.

How do you feel about all of the attention? Are you comfortable with all of these microphones in your face?

I feel kind of like a celebrity. It’s a lot of pressure. Any kid that has cameras and microphones stuck in his face is under a lot of pressure. I can handle it, but I was always the biggest star in my home town so I got a feel of it. But now I’m not just a big fish in a little pond anymore. I’m just trying to go out there and play with everybody else. It’s still a lot of pressure.

What part of the game do you need to work on the most?

Probably mental attitude. Sometimes if I make a bad decision, I’ll put my head down. I just need to move past it and make the next play.

NBA Top 100 Camp Q & A: Gary Harris

by in Recruiting | June 17th, 2011

The NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp got into full swing on Thursday at the University of Virginia and four of Indiana’s class of 2012 commitments — Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Ron Patterson — are participating.

Rosenstein’s talk with Harris, who is averaging 12.5 points through two games at the camp, continues the series:

What about Indiana interests you?

It’s close to home and I’m close with some of the players that committed there. I’d know who I will play with if I went down there. Coach Crean has done a great job recruiting me.

Will the scholarship numbers affect your decision?

The coaches said it’s not a problem, so I just got to take their word and realize that there is still going to be room for me if I go there.

Where are you overall in the recruiting process?

I don’t have any set dates on when I want to make my decision. I’m going to take some visits when all this summer stuff is not going on. Then I’ll just take time and figure out what I’m going to do.

What schools have been pursuing you the hardest recently?

Indiana, Michigan State, Louisville, Purdue and Michigan have been recruiting me the hardest.

NBA Top 100 Camp Q & A: Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell

by in Recruiting | June 16th, 2011

The NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp got into full swing today at the University of Virginia and four of Indiana’s class of 2012 commitments — Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Ron Patterson — are participating.

Rosenstein’s talk with Ferrell kicks off the series:

How has your experience here at the NBA Top 100 Camp been so far?

Everything’s going great. They’re telling us a lot of different strategies, so it’s been a lot of fun.

How’d your first game go today?

We won by 30. We were all playing real well. I just played the point guard position and was looking to pass the ball. I think I did pretty well. That’s the main thing: I’m trying to win. I don’t want to lose a single game here. I’m going to do what it takes to win.

Who else is on your team and why were you so successful?

Our biggest strength as a team is shooting. We made a lot of shots. Codi (Miller-McIntyre), the other point guard, could play the two and was also making a lot of shots. Our bigs down low were effective and that’s what helped us win the game.

Outside of the game, you and the other players have had other developmental sessions. What was that like?

The coaches here are acting like mentors. The skill development workout was very instructive. My favorite part was when this coach, I can’t remember the name, showed us some new ball handling drills. I feel if I do that, my handles will get tight, so I’ve learned a lot. It’s been a lot of fun.

Report: Cheaney will likely join Indiana basketball staff

by in Media | June 16th, 2011

Calbert Cheaney is reportedly headed back to Bloomington.

The Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer will likely join the Indiana staff in an operations position, according to Rick Bozich of The Louisville Courier-Journal.

Indiana coach Tom Crean has not offered any official word on Cheaney, but did make a statement:

“I’m not ready to make any official announcement yet but you can say that I’m extremely excited about the future of our basketball staff,” Crean said.

If the position is in basketball operations, it’s possible Cheaney could assume the spot vacated by Drew Adams, who left last month for New Mexico.

The Evansville native, who will turn 40 next month, served as a special assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors from August of 2009 until Keith Smart was fired in late April.

Cheaney scored 2,613 points at Indiana, won numerous national player of the year awards in 1993, including the Naismith Award, was a three-time All-American and is a member of Indiana’s All-Century first team.

In 13 NBA seasons with the Washington Bullets, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors, Cheaney averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

Big Ten announces single-plays for 2011-2012 season

by in Schedule | June 16th, 2011

The Big Ten isn’t expected to announce the full men’s basketball schedule for 2011-2012 until August, but the conference announced single-plays for next season earlier today:

During the 2011-12 Big Ten men’s basketball season, each team will play seven teams twice and four teams once. Below are each team’s “single-plays” for the upcoming season, as well as home-away designations for those games.

The single-plays for IU are as follows:

Home: Illinois, Northwestern
Away: Nebraska, Wisconsin

Tough break with getting Wisconsin on the road rather than at home, but the game at Lincoln should be a solid opportunity to walk away with a win. The Hoosiers avoid a trip to the other Assembly Hall, but also won’t get the opportunity to travel to Welsh-Ryan Arena, which is usually packed with IU fans.

The list of single-plays for the remainder of the conference is available after the jump …
